Not surprising but I thought earlier he was talking about taking a discount to help the team.
I believe he said he'd take a discount with the Avs because he wanted to win with them. He's done that, so no longer an obligation to take a discount. I still think he takes a discount.

I predict the exact same contract as McDavid (8 x 12.500), and that Matthews will be the one to break that barrier when the time comes.

How true is this comment? I mean.. did he say "i want to be the best paid player in the league"?
He's probably asking for $13M or more and not saying "I want to be the highest paid player.". If he goes to FA, he'll get that money. It sounds more arrogant to say "I want to be the highest paid player" rather than I think market value is $13M (or whatever).

Tom Brady also makes more in endorsements than MacKinnon could dream of. One source I saw claimed Brady has made $180 million from endorsement revenue in his career ... MacKinnon won't even make that much from hockey even if he plays until he's 50.

No doubt. Tom Brady also wouldn’t make that much in endorsements without being regarded as the goat.

Can’t compare dollar for dollar with a much larger sport, it’s the principle that taking a little less often means more team success. Patrice Bergeron is another example of a guy who has taken that approach. Unfortunately for him it hasn’t paid the same dividends.

Like I said, ultimately he has to do what he thinks is right.

Brady is married to a supermodel who earns way more than he does and secondly, the Patriots have employed the services of his "body coach" Alejandro Guerrero.

No lies.

I doubt he would have acted differently had he not married Gisele.

Not sure currently if he is the best player on his team no less to be paid as if he is Connor McDavid.. With that said, if he wants that, I would trade him honestly.

Well if he's going to sign an 8 year deal at his age it's probably not far fetched. In 3-4 years he probably wouldn't be the highest paid player anymore, as other contracts will be signed that are higher. So him being the highest paid player for a few years really shouldn't surprise people.

He took a major discount last contract to win a cup. He won a cup. Pay him now and pay him large. Simple.

He's going to get it as well. He won his cup and now he's earned his pay day after being significantly underpaid for the majority of his last contract.
He's left about $26M on the table in his career so far, by my calculations, just so that Colorado can fit more players under the cap, so they can win a cup. And now he won one.

The guy has earned a pay day maybe more than anyone else in the history on the league.

Bullshit. Obviously he's going to want to get paid, but "seeking to be the NHL's highest paid player"? Lol

If MacKinnon cares more about money than the big picture, then I'll throw my hands up in the air and admit I didn't see that coming.

EDIT: Apparently Dater has no facts. Don't spend your money.
No matter what happens with his next contract, I better not hear a single Avs fan say he cares about money more than winning. He's already proven himself more than anyone else in that regard.

No he hasn't. He's extremely driven to win, no question. But he didn't sign on a massive discount, he signed a fair contract in line with similar players at the time, and then he broke out. He's far more valuable than 6.3M, but he didn't "leave" any money on the table for the betterment of the team.

I mean he didn’t leave any money on the table though. He signed a deal that was as market value as possible for what he had proven at the time. The Avs just got fortunate that he happened to breakout after signing that contract.

Why do people keep saying he took a major discount on his last deal?

At the time he signed the contract he was a 50-60 point player (he put up 53P in 82GP the first year of the deal) and it was a pretty standard RFA deal for the time for a player with his pedigree

Other RFAs signed around that time

Kucherov 3 years, 4.8M
Gaudreau 6 years, 6.7M
Monahan 7 years, 6.3M
Forsberg 6 years, 6M
Barkov 6 years, 6M

MacKinnon definitely outplayed his contract by a wide margin but to say he took a team friendly deal at the time is not true at all.

Not to stir anything up, but what's with people saying he "took a discount" on his last contract?

He signed his $6.3 million contract on July 8, 2016 (so right after the 2015/2016 season). His 3 years prior to signing this contract:

2015/2016: 52 points in 72 games (2nd on team /gp)
2014/2015: 38 points in 64 games (7th on team /gp)
2013/2014: 63 points in 82 games (4th on team)

Even his first season after signing the $6.3: 53 points in 82 games.

Obviously he ended up becoming a better player than what his contract was at. But at the time of signing that contract, it was fair value for the player he was at the time.

The only reason we hear that he took a major discount is because of how good he is now. Did Draisaitl, Barkov, Gaudreau etc sign on a massive discount too? Nope. They signed for their value at the time but kept progressing.

Well Matthews is a ufa in 2 years so bet it.

Yes, he definitely did take a contract at the time and everyone knew it, and everyone said it on here. Major discount, even though he hadn't fully broken out yet. He was extremely young still and getting better every game.

People saying he didn't take a major discount must be too young to remember.

He’s gonna set the market for the elite players in the game for the post Covid rising cap era. My guess is 14 x 8 and the following year Matthews comes in just over that at 14.5 then McDavid the year after signs a max contract
