Pretty much no team has won a cup after having a player be in the top 5 for leagues highest salary. After wining a cup, the big pay days come and that pretty much ends the ability for the team to win it again.

He deserves a big contract and it was good on him for taking a pay cut earlier on. However his next contract will likely be the highest in the league and I cant see the Avs winning another after this

Avs got lucky that MacKinnon took so much longer to become an elite player than other young superstars in the league. Now that luck has run out and they'll quickly revert back to mediocrity.

The way i see it is :

He is a small notch below McDavid who makes 12.5
He is better (imho) then Huberdeau who makes 10.5 and Gaudreau (9.7) and plays a more important position at C
He averaged 1-1.5ppg in last few years
Just won a cup
Still only 26 even though it feels like he's been in hte league forever and very much in his prime

So i don't think he signs for anything below 11.5 -12. I don't think he will get max but 8x11.5/12 is not out of question at all

He'll sign for 10.5x8 I bet.
8 years 87 million would be something I hope everyone could live with.

He gets Sids number again and does not completely kill our cap.

If he really insists on becoming the highest paid player, odds are he won't win many more cups.
Up to him.

So Much for him saying a while back that he would take a pay cut to help Colorado stay within cap and build and balanced team :)
Uhhh didn’t he do exactly that and they won a Cup partly because he’s been underpaid? So now why wouldn’t be want the payday?

McDavid signed for $12.5m five years ago when the cap was $75m. His cap hit percentage was only 16.67%.

Under the current $82.5m cap, that would be $13.75m, and the cap is going to start going up again soon.

If MacK is asking for 12+ just let him go for whatever scrub team is able to do that within cap. Avs showed last season that they are just fine without MacK and with 12+ with correct choices to get in, they'd be even better. They'd miss the circus acts of Mack doing the high speed entry, doing spinorama and losing the puck, , though.

McDavid's contract was also based on potential. He was coming off a 100 point season as 19-20 year old.

Everyone and their moms figured over the next 8 years, he's going to have some incredible seasons, which he has.

Everyone has a different definition of "taking a pay cut". If he thinks he's a 15m a year player, then anything he takes that's less then that, would be in his mind, "taking a pay cut". I just hope he takes some lesson's from his buddy Crosby and finds a way to get a good deal that pays him well, while also allowing the team to be competitive. Because while he has been underpaid in terms of his on ice performance... one only needs so much money, and we all know that he will get a very good contract (even if he takes a big discount) for his next contract. I mean even if he only takes 10m a year, an 80m deal, plus the ~45m from his past contracts... that's a very very rich young man. Personally I hope he takes even less than 10m - something more in the 8m range. He'll still end up with over 100m in career earnings... but will leave a little extra for the team to help keep the roster as competitive as possible. Probably wishful thinking... but it's something that someone in his place is in a position to do without jeopardizing his long term financial security (vs say someone like Nuke cashing in and signing a contract that will 6x his net worth).

MacKinnon is going to be old during the contract, so if he wants a deal like 13milx8 I think that Avs might need to consider moving on because a contract like that could handcuff them completely.

And the argument that MacKinnon is underpaid right now is really not a good one. The team doesn't owe him anything.

Maybe Mac takes the hometown discount - 9.9 x 8 - and stays under the magic (no Cup winner has a 10 mil per on the cap player) 10 per?

My best guess is he will wind up signing for in between what Matthews and McDavid make for 2nd most salary in league. However I doubt he goes for 8 years as he knows when the cap goes up in 2-3 years the salaries will go up dramatically for top players. So I say 3 years 12 per and he takes out a insurance policy on himself in case of injury.

Some weird takes in here.

The Avalanche have just won a cup in large part due to Mackinnon being criminally underpaid for what will be 6 out of his 7 seasons on his current contract. He has easily lost out on 5+ million a season for the last half a decade.

He deserves every penny he will be asking for and the Avalanche shouldn't even question that.

Gif they make mackinnon the highest paid player, there cup window Closes. Learn from the Chicago and LA mistakes

True. As much as Nate has earned it, if Sakic wants more cups in Colorado and Nate says he wants McDavid money he should be told he'll have to find it elsewhere.

He’ll resign 8 x $11mm and that will be that. Probably sign that several months from now.
That doesnt make him the highest paid player in the nhl. so look over at mcdavid's contract...and start from there.
