Rumor: Dater: MacKinnon Seeking to Be the NHL's Highest Paid Player

I can promise Dater hasn’t had a single source in the Avs organization for a long time. He can barely get access to the players after games. He occasionally speculates the obvious or straight up piggy backs off other insiders and then charges for his info and claims “sources”. There’s nothing wrong with making a living but, no one is leaking a single thing to him. That’s a fact. He’s insider days are LOOOONG gone. He’s wrong like 99% of the time. I’m sure he’s a nice guy but it’s best not to believe what he says at any point.

That said, Mack is going to get paid. He got his cup and rightfully so. We will see what happens

It's been a while since McDavid and Matthews signed their deals, so yeah, it's a reasonable ask. Mack gets $13m AAV this year. Matthews gets $13.5-14 next year. McDavid gets full ownership of Edmonton (the team and the city) 3 years from now.

Still hoping they come to an agreement south of $12m though.

Lol. I was just trying to soften my words a bit. In reality, I could care less about Dater’s personal life. I just know his hockey related takes for the last 4 years or so have been dreadfully bad. Anyone that believes a single thing he says should think twice.

I especially like when he claims he heard something from his “sources” and it turns out to be the exact opposite and never was close to accurate. He then quickly deletes his tweets about the subject and acts like he never said it. Dude is cringy AF

To me when Mack implied a while back he'd be open to another 'team friendly' deal so they could win, it was always about "maybe he'd take 12M vs 13M". He's going to get paid, and massively, regardless. Some fans were speculating it would mean he might take 8 or 9M$, which is ridiculous.

Even at 13M$ it's definitely less he'd get on the open market if he goes UFA

More like the last decade + :laugh: the last time he actually broke any news it was the end of the lockout during 2013. Also called the Iginla signing IIRC, but since Sakic has taken control he's had zero positive contributions. Dude is an unhinged mess.

It easily goes both ways though. Colorado doesn't get more cups if Mackinnon leaves in Free Agency. Hell even if they cut ties and trade him for a massive haul tomorrow, none of what they get in return is going to be enough to replace Mackinnon and what he brings to the Avs.

He's the 2nd most important player to Colorado, arguably the #1 most important guy when you consider he plays the most important position in hockey, and Colorado's next best Center behind him right now is JT Compher and we literally dont have a Top 6 Center prospect in our system.


So sure, Sakic can tell Mackinnon if he wants $12M+ he can get it elsewhere, but he's also telling the Avs we aren't winning any cups any time soon either.

Not sure why it wouldn't be within Mackinnon's purview to want to be highest paid player in the game.

The highest AAV contract was signed half a decade ago by a 20 year old kid based on future potential. Mackinnon has just delivered a Stanley Cup at the tail end of a massive run of offensively dominant years. He could also take an Avalanche friendly deal and try to win more cups, but neither direction seems to be that unreasonable given where we stand.

True. Sakic has a dilemma on his hands. Sign Mac to $12M+ and make it that much more difficult to keep the team a contender, or let him walk and although they've got plenty of cap space they no longer have a 1C or 2C.

My assumption is that Sakic will move heaven and earth to keep him and while everyone will be happy at the time, the Avs are going to be in tough to get another ring any time soon.

He's entitled to any approach he wants to take. Especially if they have insight on where the cap is going, and the number that makes sense happens to make him the highest paid player, then it is what it is. It's a fair deal and we move on.

The core issue with this thread is we have a writer making MacK look like he's told his agent to make him the highest paid player. There is no truth behind it, and he's only talked about the opposite. So basically words are being put in his mouth.
 
Even if he takes more than McDavid he could still in theory be taking a discount. If he takes 13x8 with Colorado he will soon be eclipsed by players like McDavid, Matthews and probably a bunch of players who you never would have thought would make that much but now will due to the salary cap expected to rise dramatically in 2026+. MacKinnon could demand the league max on the open market. If he takes 12.5-13 now, he is probably leaving money on the table. The cap has risen since the McDavid deal.

Not exactly... You still have to replace Johnsons spot in the lineup with a player. So really it's Mack(6.3) + EJ(6.0) - EJ replacement(800k minimum) = $11.5M.... And if Mack wants $12.75M to be the highest paid player, well they need to find another $1.25M somewhere.


...and then what do they do about Byram(RFA), Newhook(RFA), Meyers(RFA)? Between those 3 guys we could be looking at anywhere from 7M-12M in additional cap space needed also.
 
Why not? The dude's proven he's one of the top 5 his contacts up so naturally now it should be his turn to be numero-uno.

He’s going to get a fat contract but dater won’t even be close. Anyone that thinks the guy thats know for asking Mackinnon the dumbest question in media history is being fed Mackinnon negotiation details is high. 11-12x8 at most.
 
Everytime I hear Dater's name and MacKinnon's name together, I laugh. I think back to the press conference where Dater told MacKinnon to "f*** it" and not think so much.

He should do what Crosby did and take a bit less to maximize his chances of winning.
