Rumor: Dater: MacKinnon Seeking to Be the NHL's Highest Paid Player

...and then what do they do about Byram(RFA), Newhook(RFA), Meyers(RFA)? Between those 3 guys we could be looking at anywhere from 7M-12M in additional cap space needed also.

Sounds like a trade is coming soon for the Avs. Mack deserves every penny especially after giving the Avs a sweetheart contract for all those years.

If they give MacKinnon 13M they will have 12,5M cap space for 2023-2024 to:

- Extend Bowen Byram (RFA)
- Extend Newhook (RFA)
- Replace/extend JT Compher
- Replace Cogliano
- Replace Helm
- Replace Sedlak
- Replace EJ

Do the math. Every penny saved in MacK's contract is needed to remain a contender. Avs would not want to become another Edmonton now.

Well he wasn’t the best player in the NHL then and he isn’t that now either.
 
Mack deserves big payday he does everyrhing score, pass, hit and fight. Sure it's too much but AVS can't lose him.

This Crosby narrative is nonsense (just like Mackinnon selflessly taking a discount on his last contract… when he was a 60 point player). Crosby got a now illegal backdiving contract that was the most lucrative in NHL history. He traded cap hit for term at the height of his concussion issues when there was a very realistic possibility his career would be cut short.

They love to pay themselves on the back for these things.

Also, when Crosby signed his deal, it took up 14.5% of the cap. For, let's say a 84.5 max cap next season, that would be 12.25 mil a season. Raise it up to 12.6 mil a season and bang, highest paid player, and the Avs can still build a contender during his formative years.

Erik Johnson goes away and that basically covers the difference. They still have like 3.5mil in space, plus let's say the cap goes up 1 mil. Will they have to make some decisions, ofcourse. But this doomsday discussion if he gets 12.6 mil is ridiculous.

It's a no brainer. Pay the man.

They should be working out the deal so that it is signed before the season. 8 year 100.8 mil.

I did not say Mackinnon don't deserve this amount but I got some reserve,
The only person who knows how much Mackinnon wants it's Mackinnon.
Dater think that and put that to have rating and click bait.
Right now Mackinnon are in Cole Harbour and Dater is in Denver.
Don't forget this 2 guys are not friends.
I believe the contract will be between 10.5 to 11.5 M per year. and every $$$ less than 13M will be a discount

I know their contracts issues. I’m an Avs fan

Go check every cup winning team of the last 20 years. What do they have? I’ll save you time… an elite 1C. You don’t let Mack walk.

Imagine writing replacing EJ and extending JTC over signing Mack. Yikes

I know you’re a crazy rants fan but maybe we should trade him?

Matthews doesn’t go to Arizona. He pulls a gudreau and goes to a city relatively close to Arizona but a team that will pay him like LA

As of now, Byram is the only guy on the list that should get paid. If Newhook does too, I guess that’s a good problem to have. We’d also be paying a minimum of $4.1m for our 5D. It’s not all that hard to find a bit of wiggle room to fill out the depth.

Not really as Mack is still young and they have the contract room and are also constructed differently than those Chicago and LA teams..

They also could easily move Girard's contract to free up space as he would be somewhat redundant.

You want EJ back at 6M? If he comes back with 1-2M that'd be fine. That's replacing EJ with EJ. But I think he's retiring. JTC needs to be replaced by a 2C for Avs. If there is none, that could be JT.

What / who do you expect to get for trading Rants unless your mind is in a re-build mode. He is the other beast in the playoffs with MacKinnon in this team. And elite in regular season, also. Who are you going to trade him for an at what price? Rantanen is an immovable object both on the ice and in the trade market. And that's all good for the Avs.
 
Yes I do think he brings more to the ice than Marthews and Mc David to name a few. He is just so physically dominant in his play and that to me is what separates him from all the others. BTW, he can win another cup or two before those other centers are playing elsewhere due to not winning a cup.
