And while I can agree with you that the game is changing becoming a quicker more skilled game half of that equation is missed on Poiles team. Look at the young guys on Tampa's roster and for that matter Buffalo's they are more skilled than those Poile has coming up not named Forsberg.
This is where patience comes in. These teams like the ones you mentioned, Buffalo and Tampa were really bad at the times they got their star players drafted. To make my point, yes we want a cup now, but with the Subban trade our window opened up significantly. I get the Rinne is getting older chant we hear but we never know what's going to happen with goaltenders hitting FA in the coming years if Saros isn't ready, but again, to make my point, you have to have homegrown guys that you draft be developed and get time with your organization before just trading them off...especially the ones you have watched in camp enough to know they are worth a damn.
I'll highlight Tampa for instance.
2008 - 1st OVR pick - Stamkos
2009 - 2nd OVR pick - Hedman
2011 - 1st rd. - 27th OVR - Namestnikov
2011 - 2nd rd. - 58th OVR - Kucherov
2011 - 7th rd. - 208th OVR - Palat
2012 - 19th OVR pick - Vasilevskiy
2013 - 3rd OVR - Drouin
Tyler Johnson - signed in 2011 after going undrafted.
All of those players are still on the roster and got their start by being drafted by the lightning with the exception of Tyler Johnson - who might as well be because they signed him as an undrafted FA in the same year of 2011.
My point here is, you don't trade your best prospects just because a fan base thinks the window on a cup is closing. And you sure as hell don't trade your best prospects for a 39 point winger in hopes that he becomes a 60-70 point player just because you slot him next to Johansen and Neal.
It's also important to have a good few years of drafts....which if you can get one or two guys out of those drafts that turn into something you're doing well.
Fiala
Kamenev
Fabbro
Dougherty
Trenin
Carrier
Kirkland
Aberg
Saros
Those guys in my opinion are our top prospects. And our blue print looks somewhat similar when compared to those drafted that I mentioned by TBL. If we can get ours to turn out like there's as far as making the NHL and sticking, I think we're looking pretty darn good.
Maybe you flip some for immediate help or a no brainer upgrade to our first line....but for this particular post/proposal...nichushkin is not that guy...or even close. I rest my case
