I'm pretty happy with this. I don't really care about adding another top 6 forward, but we have the cap space, and it keeps him from going to a team that needs him, so it's a win win.

Dallas would be the only team that wouldn't care about adding another top 6 forward.

 now I'm confused... what does Dallas offense looks like next season? Ready for 300 goals?

anyhow... great signing by DAL, I would have loved him in a Sens jersey... especially at that price

Something like

Benn - Seguin - Sharp
Janmark - Spezza - Hudler
Roussel - Faksa - Hemsky
Eaves - Eakin - Ritchie
MacKenzie

Eakin could end up centering Benn and Seguin and then Sharp would play with Spezza and Hudler. There will be tons of different line combos with Ruff coaching

I like that you already left off Nuke

Ideally you would put Hudler at Roosters spot and Rooster at Richie spot with a signed Nichushkin on Spezza wing.

I really hope we don't lose Nuke out of this, unless it's for a goalie fix

Nill said, per Stepneski, that he sees Hudler in a top 6 spot. Which tells me he doesn't see Nuke in said spot.

The guy couldn't put up 50 points with Gaudreau and Monahan last year. He was such a passenger that the Flames didn't even try to re-sign him, and instead gave his 'locked' spot (going into the season) to a carousel of useless scrubs like Jooris, Ferland and Jones. He ended up with 1 point in the playoffs for Florida...

2014-2015 Hudler was entirely different than 2015-2016 Hudler, for whatever reason. If the Stars get 2014-2015 Hudler, then they just made a massive move. If they get 2015-2016 Hudler, they wasted 2M.

Kinda hard to do when he only played 53 games in Calgary. His pace while in CGY was over 50 points in 82 games.

this isn't actually confirmed yet... there's no signed deal in place and everyone is still going off the same report from one random guy

guess it's on sportsnet.ca now

It was confirmed by the Stars through their beat writers that a deal is in place

17:40 is top 4 minutes though ? 3rd pairing guys don't play nearly 18 minutes. If player A plays 20 minutes a night for 60 games then 16 minutes a night for 22 games, does that mean that player B couldn't have taken his top 4 role during those 22 games ? Just ranking players by TOI means nothing out of context. By your measure Kris Russel is a #3 D which nobody actually thinks is true.

By what rubric does playing 17:50 a night make him a top 4 dman? The fact of the matter is, he wasn't getting top 4 time for Dallas and there are only 2 teams in the entire league for which 17:50 per night would have qualified as top 4 minutes: Tampa and Arizona. In both cases, he would have been the 4th defenseman.

Johns got no PK or PP time. In 14 regular season games, he had only 2 games in which he played more than 18:58, so you're example scenario is ridiculous. He didn't play 60 games at 20 minutes a night. He played 14 games, most of them for less than 18 minutes a night. In the playoffs, he played even less. 13 games, 2 where he played for 20 minutes (one of which went to OT), one where he played almost 19, and the other 10 he played less than 16.

Johns has played 27 games in the NHL. Even calling him a 3rd pair dman at this point is generous. Let's see him play a full season getting top 4 minutes before we anoint him as a top 4 dman.

While the run through ice time numbers is fine, look at the Stars roster. Two veterans were let go, and only one was signed. They are backfilling the extra spot with guys from AHL. Chances are Johns will be the guy moving up the lineup.

Lost 35g, 105pts:
Goligoski, 5-32-37
Sceviour, 11-12-23
Demers, 7-16, 23
Fiddler, 12-10-22

Gained 19g, 59pts:
Hudler, 16-30-46
Hamhuis, 3-10-13

I know it's not a 1-1 ratio, every goal going in and out aren't the same since there isn't a fixed number of goals possible, and some guys will score more, some less, etc. Are the Stars going to score all that many more goals than they did last year? Maybe, but not because of Hudler. He's basically another Hemsky.

The Stars scored 261 goals 2 years ago, and 267 last year. Spezza increased his goal total by 16, they added Sharp, and scored 6 more goals as a team. Maybe Spezza scores a couple less, Janmark scores a few more, Faksa scores some more, maybe Nichushkin isn't there.

Anyway, it'll probably even out somewhere. Unless Benn and Seguin go crazy.

I don't understand how Nichuskin hasn't worked out in Dallas. His skillset on that style of team seems like a perfect fit

If we keep Nichushkin I'll like this. If not...

If the team doesn't keep Nichushkin, you should really like this. There will be a roster hole, and Hudler fills it (probably better than Nichushkin).

His skillset is a big reason why he's struggling. The guy has a beer league quality shot.

He's still relatively young. Look at the #3 from that year Drouin who appeared to be a perfect fit in TB. He just kinda got it finally in the playoffs.
