What an absolute steal. Benn is twice the player Toews is and lately I'd take him over Ovechkin as well.

One of the very best players in the league! But the cap better start rising to keep up with these big contracts being signed.

Dallas are so lucky they have Klingberg under contract for another 6 years at 4.2 mill. It definately gives them futire wiggle room...unreal they have Benn and Klingberg locked up now longterm for a combined total of 13.7 ish mill

Texas is a no state income tax state. What's the equal value for Benn in the open market when he can only get 7 years as a free agent? 8 years and $68M in Florida was worth more than 7 years and $70M as a free agent for Stamkos. $9.5M in Texas is equal to what in another market? Which team is paying a winger $11M-$12M as a free agent next summer in a flat salary cap world? Great player It's a very good team.

Tavares may get 11 mill next summer. I think it depends if he can get over 80-85 points this year

Twice the player Toews is.:laugh::laugh: Are you referring to twice the hockey player. Let the world know once he leads his team to a cup or three. Puts up better numbers but Toews does all the things that help a team win (important games).

LOL@term. But good for Ben and every other athlete.

I mean he's the franchise player and captain and one of the best players in the game . He was going to get that term and he's still young enough that 8 years are still fine. 34-35 is right around the time where it can become sketchy but it could be much much worse.

Yep, that is quite embarassing to say the least and that's without even mentioning the absolute steal part. I guess max salary would have been just simply 'a steal'.

Fair deal, but I do worry about how he will age in 5+ years, but Dallas has to sign him. Fair deal

Pretty much my take. The contract is the going rate for players like Benn, so no issue with it. Father Time says contracts like Benn and many of his peers may not look so great somewhere down the road.

so at 36 a cap hit of 9.5 is a good thing

Really depends in part on what the cap is then, how much salaries have risen, etc. Cap goes up at least $3-5M most years, and will be probably (no guarantees, I Know) close to $100 M then. Even if he is only symbolically their leader at that point, it will seem okay under all but the worst circumstances.

Some think its too high, others too low, too long by a year, etc. All the chatter makes me think the deal is right where it needs to be and good for all sides.

Nothing anyone can do about it regarding concern how it'll look in the 7th and 8th year.. he's a star of the league and it's just what happens when players sign these huge extensions... unless they get rid of 8 year deals, it'll always happen with star players

That's a bad contract, 9.5M cap hit until he's 35? I don't think he's worth that much. Without Seguin, Benn isn't nearly the player he is... you have to at least pay Seguin 9.5M now.

While I'm a bigger Seguin fan than a Benn fan, I disagree here. Both years when Seguin went down with injuries, Benn kept scoring and producing well. Heck, in this year's playoffs, he played with Eakin and was still a top scorer in the first couple rounds. He's worth it.

And the Stars will have the cap when they need it to extend Seguin too.
