I have no idea if he’ll be any good and I wouldn’t bother to guess. My issue is if they could have taken him later on, which seems quite likely.
Of course, making the assumption that scouts for other teams were not also high on Allan. Hawks were .... and they got the guy they wanted.

After the S. Jones trade, the Hawks had a pretty wide gap between their first two picks. They didn't want to risk losing Allan.

Suppose they gambled and Allan was available for their 2nd pick: no C. Dach now.

The positioning of the Hawks picks dictated a large part of their strategy, and seems sound. Would they have drafted differently if they had an earlier 2nd? Maybe.

Hopefully, Allan has a good season and converts some of the doubters (Musto ain't happening, lol).

Agree with the above. Allan is likely a reach where the Hawks chose him and maybe Del Mastro even makes Allan redundant, but they were committed to getting tougher to play against on the back end. To be honest, I didn't see anyone available that screamed "I'm a great value at the end of the first round". With limited scouting exposure, you either want a lot of picks to compensate for misses or you want to reduce the risk......I think they chose the 2nd option with Jones trade and hopefully, they got the #1 D Man they needed and coveted.

If Allan turns into a decent 4D is this pick considered a success?
Yes, but you want something more than that with a 1st round pick.

Allan seems like a good bet to be a bottom pairing defensive defenseman but I'd think you'd want more upside in a 1st round pick. The Hawks scouts must think he has a lot of untapped offensive ability because the lack of scoring for a 1st round pick is actually really scary.

I mean if you're being honest Allan's ceiling is Connor Murphy.

Allan seems to be very advanced defensively but lagging badly offensively.
I know you have already stated you don’t watch Hawk games while continuing to troll here.
I’m guessing you’re really a leaf fan. They are the only fan base that measures the value of Dmen by only offensive production.

every post makes clearer and clearer how little you know about hockey.

Is...is this a joke?

He may not have been your guy, but this idea that there were sure fire star caliber prospects available at that spot is a joke.

That draft sucked, hawks were picking late. There wasn’t an elite prospect available.

He wasn’t my first choice either, but don’t act like there was a consensus player we passed on.

With a late 1st, a second pairing D-man is a good get.

Absolutely not. This board needs to stop its constant Murphy slander. Allan will never be at Murphy's level.

This draft did not suck.

There wasn't an elite talent available per se, but Kirsanov was the best shutdown defender available. If that's what the Hawks want out of Allan, that's a huge mistake not picking Kirsanov instead. Morrow was the best skating defender with size available. If that's what the Hawks want out of Allan, that's a huge mistake not picking Morrow instead. I also think Simon Robertsson is going to be a good two way winger which is more than Allan will be. And we could have also taken Logan Stankoven who could easily be a 20 goal scorer in the league.

There was a lot of talent left on the board. Can't believe I'm seeing revisionist history here already.

Revisionist to your views you mean. Obviously, Hawks scouts disagree and besides, it is impossible to predict how these players will fare as they mature. Put a lid on it.

I find it odd that Kelly was some master talent evaluator but now he isn’t.

Is he only a master evaluator when the Hawks take smurfs?

As I predicted the Hawks were going defense in the first round and sure enough, they did.

And there is a lot to like about Allan. I like this direction of big and tough instead of sissy smurfs. Get them out the pipeline, I say.

Imagine bragging about predicting 1 of 2 outcomes correctly (they were never gonna take a goalie).
Oh ease up, Ray.

Thank god the Hawks have finally seen the light and are prioritizing big, tough NA kids instead of sissy floaters.

It’s a great time to be a Hawks fan….well… outside of the sexual assault stuff…..
