WJC: Czech U20 team

I wrote that the most important thing will be for the implementation team to do a good job and thus imitate Rulíka et al. But for now, this looks like a throwback to the old days. We can take comfort in the fact that these are only preliminaries, but this team so far, I repeat so far, does not resemble the team from last year. And I'm afraid it won't get much better.
It's probably unnecessary, because this was a collectively bad performance, but the person who is perhaps the most noticeable that he is not at ease is Cech. I always thought he was a solid player, but he already played badly against Latvia and today he only confirmed it.
Most of the players really had a bad legs day. The transition through the neutral zone was terribly slow, there was too little dynamics in skating. Most of the penalties were the consequence of this. Of course this is something which often changes day to day, so I wouln't draw any big conclusions. They simply need to play much better in the tournament.

Yes, nothing really worked. The opponent was simply getting into our third, we defended poorly all over the field, we had bad movement, we were absolutely not good enough in personal duels. I'm convinced that under Rulík we wouldn't have looked so bad in the preliminary matches (yes, I know that we also lost to Switzerland last year, but that match seemed to get better and better from our side as time went on. The only thing missing here was Kulich..).. I have to say I don't have high expectations after today. We can only surprise, it can't possibly be worse.

I remember we beat the US once in exhibition and I thought we'd be great.. then we got destroyed in the actual tourney. Hopefully this wakes everyone up and gets the coaches some ideas.

In a rare thing for me, glad I didnt' see any of it.haha

It comes down to making adjustments and moving on.
I’ll say it again, that it’s far worse to get injuries in pre-tourney then play a bad game.

One year Sweden got killed by US I believe something like 8-1 in pre-tourney. I think when Will Nylander was there. Sweden ended up being one of the best teams at the end of it.

Other years like Czechboy mentioned, we played amazing pre matches and failed miserably when it mattered.. ie. the year Gudas played we only lost 4-3 to Canada. I thought wow, we might actually be good, then we lost 7-1 to them in round robin.

Let’s just wait for the real tournament. Slovakia will be a real test. If we can beat them, I think we can say we have a decent team.

Kulich will be a big boost for top line and help round out top 6 forward group.

Expectations for Sale in this tournament? He's been quiet in the OHL.
He's a very good playmaker with a very good shooter in Kulich. He also has chemistry with sapo and hamara. So he is, IMO, in a position to be very successful. Anything less than .ppg would be disappointing.

Well... f***... Just reading about the shooting in Prague. Awful.
Horrible.

Sounds like mistakes have been made though. I read that the killer is also the main suspect in a murder case. A week ago, a man and a baby have been killed in Kladensk.

If that's true then I wonder why the killer was still on the loose a week after the killings and why the Police didn't find all the illegal weapons he apparently had.

Conclusions based on pre-tournament games are always tricky. All players definitely need to show much better movement. The reason why they were weak in physical battles was mainly that they were late in them, always a step behind their opponents. The same with the penalties: You are late in duels, you are taking penalties. It is always like this. They simply need to be skating faster, with better dynamics.

I guess he hasn’t had the best year. I’m sure they took a good look at him.
Must be a good sign if we’re leaving players like that behind. Not often do we keep a 3rd rounder at home
Good sign or sign of stupid decisions? We also left two players who are regularly playing ELH with men at home. And instead brought players like Zidlicky, who Is already as I said looking completely terrible.

I want to be wrong, I wish we will suceed, but I dont have a lot of belief in this team. We could have put together stronger team from what was available imo. And Kulich can't save it all just by himself.

I agree that, for example, Pérez should have gone (and who is the other one?), but this is not about two players strengthening us and suddenly we will be much better. We won't. Everything has to be much better from our side.

Definitely not getting my hopes up. It’s best that way.
Last year I didn’t expect anything either and look how that turned out. FINALLY.

Kulich is a beast. I’m picturing him scoring on every power play.

I think the main reason for no Perez is that he doesn’t fit in the top 6. I agree that he could or should still be there but that’s probably the reasoning.
They want bigger more physical players in the bottom 6.

I'm generally fine with the roster. Only thing upsetting was no Dvorak. You could say that is on Dvorak but why doesn't he want to play for his country or old coach? Maybe there is more to the story? Don't really know.

I was for Perez only because he plays on big ice. But he's not the difference between gold and relegation. I would've been fine to see him there though.

The goalies baffle me a bit... I don't think they are bad at all. I like Vondras and Schnattinger but if Hrabal struggles (he's only 18) then we are in trouble. Funny thing is that last year I thought Hrabal should be the number 3 to gain this experience for this year.lol

Prčík instead of Port? Prčík was among the worst defenders at the tournament in november..

I didn't see either exhibition game, but I have very low expectations. Both results were uninspiring to say the least and the team doesn't look that good on paper anyway. And Augusta is no Rulik. Losing Dvorak is brutal, probably would be the best defenseman on the squad and offense looks so mediocre. Unless the Sale-Sapovaliv-Kulich line goes red hot, it will be once another one or at best best two win tournament with possibly taking a beating from the USA.

I'm still optimistic to be honest... Slovakia game will be the key for us IMO.

Some strange decisions and if it fumbles then we'll know why.lol

Weird D selecitons
Weird G selections
Weird coaching deployment

I could care less about exhibition wins or losses. I'll get judgey on boxing day after Slovakia game.lol

Only thing I don't like is our crossover. It's brutal.

My goal hasn't changed.. make the quarters and win that one game. Anything after that is gravy.

If that Sale/Sapo/Kulich line is a thing.. I'm very excited for that!

I’m with you 100%. Too many people put so much weight into pre-tourney matches and on paper rosters.
Of course it’s ok to have opinions and I’m usually pessimistic of our nation at this tournament as well.
But how many of us honestly predicted a Gold medal final last year?

We won’t get there this year imo because of our defence but it’s not totally out of question to get to a semifinal.
Like you say it’s 1 game. Anything can happen.
I really like our top line and guys like Becher, Rymon, and Štancl could still make a decent impact.

If we get a win against Slovaks then we put ourselves in a good position. Don’t forget they also didn’t oook good against Finland.

They have 8 defensemen. The game line-ups will include 6 or 7 of them. It is highly likely Prčík won't make the final roster. It was expected that either Port or Kočí would be the final cut, now Prčík is probably going to be with the team just for the case there are further injuries. So this basically changes nothing, the only thing is that it increases Matto Kočí's chance to be the 7th defenseman instead the 8th.

I hope so. If Čech had very bad games in the preliminary matches, then Prčík had even more. I sure hope he doesn't make it into the game at all.
