I am generally a fan of the job Bettman’s done with the NHL. But his insistence on Arizona as a market which was clearly, obviously, blatantly, empirically not working, is a huge black mark on him.

If the right owner was in place, this wouldn't be an issue.

From what I can gleam from my reading and following this for years is that ARI has never had an owner that was worth having.

All of them seem to have made enemies of the municipalities

All of them seem to have been in the ownership game for 'rich man things' and nothing else

Is Bettman to blame? Not really. He isn't the only voice that vets these owners; the other owners do, the league's lawyers do. If the owners say 'Yeah, he seems good, go with him" Bettman will do just that.
