The two best comparables in terms of arena situation are the Hurricanes and the Panthers. The major difference between the situations is the ability of ownership to make things work. That's it.

Before the last lockout, the fundamental economics of the bottom 10-15 franchises in the league just didn't work. That has changed for everyone except the Coyotes, who, being in one of the largest markets in the USA should have been able to benefit tremendously.

I think you are discussing the possibilities of the market. I am talking about the realities of what happened. I agree that it is possible to make it work in the Phoenix market. I have no trouble with that. But I am saying that, in 2007-8, when the team was divorced from the development, and was playing in Glendale, in that particular situation, with the recession soon coming, there was simply no way to create enough money for both CoG and the team to be satisfied.

It was a confluence of bad events. Simply that. It's the reason that, in BK, the only bidders were the NHL and Balsillie. There is a reason that only IA was able to purchase the team, and they needed a 15M/yr AMF to do that.

They gonna self-sponsor? You know what I mean.

Home Depot, UPS, Delta, Coke, Aflac, Waffle House, Chick-Fil-A, Cox, Arbys, Newell, Norfolk Southern, NCR, Equifax, Carters, Global Payments, etc. Those HQs are right down the highway from the Krause arena. Some or most of those companies are going to sponsor them as they do with all the other pro teams in town.

Winnipeg doesn't have that, neither does Vancouver or Calgary. Hell, Toronto and Montreal don't even have that.
Yet they have a team...

They're not going to sponsor them out of the goodness of their hearts. If there's little to no consumer interest, there's not a lot of incentive to spend a lot of money on sponsorships.
I'm sure given stable ownership/arena situation that Atlanta 3 would be fine, like the Hurricanes or Panthers recently, but they probably wouldn't be a huge money maker immediately.

Absolutely. I'm a huge proponent for bringing the league back here, but anyone willing to put up $1bn on a franchise knows they're not gonna get a whole lot in their first few season, as far as profit is concerned. Much like building a house, the market needs a foundation, and that appears to be something both prospective owners are working towards.

Establish that foundation, start off with a team that isn't gonna have 57 losses in their first season, even simply be competitive, and the profits will come. But time and patience is a necessity.

Perhaps it is because I grew up in the area where they're going to be (whether Anson or Krause's arena) and know the pulse but I cannot stress how much they will be a money maker. I used to go hang out at the UPS CEO's house as a teenager, which was 10 minutes down the road from my house, where my parents still live, and that's 10 minutes from the Krause arena site. The immediate area is absolutely loaded with money; everyone is filthy rich.

The Braves became a hit once they moved closer to money, but they're not amongst the money. This arena, whether its in Forsyth or North Point, will be amongst the money. Of the 15th richest cities in Georgia, and that's counting the outliers along the coast, 6 immediately surround the area.

But I understand the skepticism, I do. Nevertheless, I can't wait. It's going to be a massive shock to the rest of the league.

Sometimes the cruelty of business is just that….

I’m reminded of the movie “Secrets Of My Success” where Brantley Foster walks into meet his boss for the first time only to be told he’s fired because of a hostile takeover.

as we appreciate all posters/mods/Admins of the Coyotes board here and in the team forums for the last 28 years of the franchise..... all should be commended for the coverage of the franchise.... right/wrong/indifferent but always respected

There are so many things that have to go perfectly in order for him to get a team back and even then who tf is dumb enough to get emotionally invested in another team run by this grifter?

Just go away. take your money, go away, and leave NHL hockey to someone else.

Man, they're really going to need to play up Bettman's heel credentials to get Arizona fans on board with literally anything Meruelo-related.
I’m just flabbergasted that the NHL is going to sacrifice two fanbases (Tucson and Phoenix) and throw them in the Pit of Despair for the next five years because they couldn’t wait another two months to see where it was heading.

While Meruelo cranks The Pain Machine up to 100.

The fact that this is indeed happening as I read about it-a large mixture of emotions.
Interesting to read that it seems Tempe was possibly the straw that started down the road here towards where we are seemingly now. Sounds like between Tempe and then the stuff al the all star game from the players about 3 more years at least, yea it crashed down hard.

Incredible stuff..
There better be . Welcome back BTW!
Its good to be back :) Thank you!

Tempe was probably the last straw because the campaign for it was so poor. It’s clear they don’t trust the auction. And with another CBA upcoming, the conditions and standards of the arena and facilities stood to be an issue the league can only lose on with the PA.

I know there's been talk about the AHL Roadrunners moving to Mullet to finish out he Coyotes lease, but has anybody heard anything about Meruelo maintaining ownership of that team? Or is SEG acquiring the AHL team and the Mullet lease and basically agreeing to play the team there.

Corporate is a concern, but it isn’t long lasting. Will Winnipeg ever get a bunch of Top 10 Corporations located here anytime ever?… probably not, but we will have enough “ middle type” corporations to fill the gaps.
Really the reason Winnipeg’s attendance issues are what they are is because corporate business kinda got shutout during the drive to 13,000 and then they had a waiting list to contend with.
Now all that is gone and TN has some sucking up to do to get them to purchase a few thousand seats.
I’m not too worried.
