O’Brien brings needed sandpaper and enforcement needed on a team w Cooley and Keller. He can beCooly’s McSorley.
Seriously? McSorley could play and fight. O'Brien can't do either. He does bring sandpaper and while he is not good at it, he will fight. Good team guy. 13th forward until we find someone better.

O'Brien isn't an enforcer in any sense of the word....
There really aren’t any of those left anyway. He’s as much an “enforcer” as any left in the league. I’d rather just have Crouse, McBain, and Brown play all 82 games and then we don’t need LOB. He’s really not a better fighter or tougher or more intimidating than any of those guys. He’s just not someone you’d miss when he’s in the box. That’s not enough to justify a spot on the bench.

O'Brien will be healthy scratched a number of times this season as that spot is kind of fluid. While I'd prefer someone like Jeník to get the spot, I think realistically he end up scratched a lot and he needs more consistent playtime so it's better to have him in the AHL. Plus, Jeník is at risk of getting picked off waivers.

Proper development should still be the key factor for roster decisions right now and I don't think O'Brien's spot befits that.

He is a hard hitter and that can be nice to have someone who's whole job is that over the course of an 82 game season. The others don't have to take on the toughness mantle every night, which saves them wear and tear. But more over, I don't really want to risk a McBain or a Crouse on a regular season fight. I remember what happened to Taylor Pyatt years ago, or Domi breaking his hand. There's a lot of injury risk in every fight.

I read that back to myself and realize how unethical the statement is. O' Brien is basically disposable enough to risk long term health in the regular season, but the others are not. Ok.... yeah, maybe he shouldn't be playing.

It’s just not worth playing with 11 forwards to have that luxury, I don’t think. Not when it’s a bigger, tougher squad anyway (by todays standards).

Lamoureux and Geekie should have one more year of Junior and then one year of AHL. Which puts them ready for the NHL in two years. Simashev and But should have one year of transition time in the KHL and then one year of prime time KHL. Which puts them ready for the NHL in two years, also. Artem Duda should play this year amateur and next year AHL. So, possibly NHL ready in two years.

We should be looking at one heckuva NHL camp in a couple of years. Simashev, Lamoureux and Duda all coming in ready and expecting to win spots. Though, surely there won’t be enough spots to win. That should be a knock down, drag out dog fight.

Cooley and Guenther should make full time it this year. Doan and maybe Jenik next year for full time. Then But and Geekie in that camp the next. Not only trying to make the team but looking to unseat young stars for choice minutes. And with the likes of Lipkin, Moroz, Matikka, Nordh, Lutz, etc nipping at their heels and challenging.

What a camp it will be in two years time.

Also, Tucson has a bright future. I think they’ll be good this year. Possibly very good next. And even carrying over into that next year at least. We better make sure we’re 100% sold on that staff to develop properly. It hasn’t mattered much before now. It’s about to matter a lot this season. And that a TON the season after. Tucson is suddenly mission critical.

I'm not worried about not enough spots on D. The only sure thing on D is Moser, maybe Valimaki and Durzi.

Smith, Thomson, Harkins, Woo, Fagemo, Rathbone and Myers being on waivers is a good reminder that even very promising prospects very often don’t work out. All these guys were highly valued by their teams and fanbases very recently. It’s a good thing we’ve got a lot of pick volume over many years. A lot of the kids we’re all excited about just won’t make it.

You just figuring that out now?;)

Especially when you factor in the Coyotes historic suckage at the whole drafting and developing thing.

Now, we have reason to be optimistic with the fantastic scouting/front office team they have assembled BUT there is still some doubt/worry in my eyes anyway.

They say history repeats itself, but in this case I don't think it will. There will be mistakes, like every other NHL team, but we are now operating like a NHL franchise.

History does not repeat itself but it does rhyme. I expect our next 10 years to rhyme w the Blues draft history, given BA’s background.

For me, there is a worry about their obsession with drafting size.

It's become much more pronounced than for any other team ever.
I hope that it's well-informed and supported by some emerging data. Not just driven by a vision.
But I do like to day dream about a team full of speedy giants that can punish the other team and also score.

Maybe it’s just laying the foundation. And now that we’re sure we have plenty of this highly desired quality we will be much more willing to deviate and bolster with skill of any size.
