Thinking of the Ottawa conundrum and how badly I want to add Kleven (as unrealistic as that probably is) I wondered if it’s possible to retain on cheap, two way contracts like Dermott’s. Would keeping a capable 7th D that makes less than the league minimum be enticing?

Something like Dermott, and Ottawa’s own 2026 2nd for Kleven and Joseph?

Doan is progressing nicely. He looked much more comfortable this camp compared to last year. His skating has improved, which I was a bit concerned about. He is positionally sound, just needs more experience, and to add about twenty pounds.
What's crazy is after going to about half the ASU home games I felt like the only thing he improved on was his defensive game and board battles. I actually felt his skating was a little underwhelming. But I completely agree, it's improved seemingly over the summer. Or maybe he just learned to do more with less steps.

And agreed, can't wait for him to add that man weight. He's a big boy.

Locks: Brown, Dumba, Durzi, Moser, Stecher, Valimaki
Bubble: Dermott, Soderstrom, Szuber
I think Szuber starts in the AHL to get used to NA ice and is the first callup.
Very excited about Szuber's rise. Agreed that he needs to start in the AHL but I hope he gets a cup of coffee this year.

If our entire LD is Moser, Valimaki and Szuber by mid-season, what a feather in the cap of the scouting department that would be.
Yeah wow. Now hopefully that Russian scout is as good as whoever picked these three

This group of scouts will be forever linked to Simashev and But, good or bad.

Cooley was a great pick but expected. Geekie and Lamoureux were reaches but with the Cooley pick wont be judged as harshly.

If the 2 russians hit, they are geniuses. If they dont, they are idiots (especially if Leonard or Dvorsky or Benson become stars).

I’m hoping for Alex Tuch and K’Andre Miller out of these two.

Was Cooley expected? I think many had Wright as our choice.

I think Cooley was guaranteed to go no later than 4th. Most often he was rated 3rd, I’d say. And Nemec most often 4th.

1. Wright/Slafkovsky
2. Slafkovsky/Wright
3. Cooley
4. Nemec/Jiricek
5. Jiricek/Nemec

I think there was a commonly accepted chance Nemec or Jiricek could unseat someone in the top three, though. Most assumed it would not be Wright. Which was a big surprise.

Maybe I was paying attention to different pundits than you, but I remember our team being excoriated for passing up on Shane Wright in favor of Logan Cooley. "Poverty franchise skips out on generational player" was the stuff I was reading.

There was some wavering near draft day when it came out Wright had a bit of an attitude during his team interviews. We obviously weren't the only team that picked up on that.
