They aren't a cap team this year so the 50% is academic. May as well do it. Seems like teams just waited BA out if they were interested.

If it helps increase the return retaining 50% is a no brainer to me. We likely won’t be near the cap for a while and it’s only for one season

Coming off a decent year and 50% retention only costs them $500k, moving Kessel this summer is a no brainer for the Coyotes.

If my math is right...

Kessel has a 8 mil cap hit. Cash owed this season is 6 mil, of which 5 mil was a signing bonus.

The Leafs pick up 15% of all of that because of retention on the trade to Pittsburgh.

So that means our cap hit is 6.8 mil, our cash owing is 5.1 mil, and our portion of the bonus was 4.25 mil.

We owe him only 850k cash for the remainder of the year now that the bonus has been paid.

If moved, we can still retain another 50% of the remainder.

With BA name dropping both Pitlick and Larsson yesterday, I assume both will be protected from Seattle.

Still need to figure out the goaltending situation.

Do we have enough D to meet the expansion requirement?

Could be, or he could just be emphasizing the player "type" he's interested in. Personally, I'd attempt to hang onto them.

I'm so confused on our Seattle situation. I haven't really tried to think about it and figure anything out. I anticipated more trades and movement in preparation. But now I don't know. It's right around the corner.

On top of that I doubt anyone would trade for Phil before it because they would need to protect him right?

Feels like we are not very prepared for it, when are the lists due? Has to be in the next two weeks right?

Still have no idea whether BA is going to do a little retooling or a complete rebuild. The protected list should tell us, as we may see some surprises if we are rebuilding.

I wonder if we could trade OEL for a 1st, Kessel for a 1st and Keller for a 1st, then roll them into a package for Eichel.

Interesting. I'm no GM and don't really care to play armchair GM, but this intrigues me, even if I am a bit terrified of Eichel's neck. Do we know if he's going to be able to have his surgery? I wish I knew the condition, because I know a bit about this from personal experience.

It feels like L.A and Buffalo's talks are heating up. Also there's chatter that Vegas is now in the mix. I just don't think we have the assets to beat either team, which is kind of sad considering Vegas gave up great pieces for Max and Stone and still have enough to beat us in an Eichel bid after making the WFC twice and the SCF once.

I think the return on Kessel will show the direction. If it's for picks this year or next, it's probably a rebuild where players like Schmaltz and Keller get moved at the TDL if they have not taken another step. If it's for guys like Lauzon or Bokk then it's probably more of a retool.

My ideal situation would be to get a late 1st for Kuemper or an earlish 2nd. A guy like Bokk and a 2022 3rd for Kessel or some guys who can take roster spots and then be moved at the TDL (Bellows + Ladd) and then some things that can help us now but also could be flipped at the deadline for OEL (DeBrusk + Lauzon for instance). Ways to get more capital back.

To be clear, I'm completely torn on full rebuild or retool. Depending on the day I'm fine with the idea of moving guys like Garland and Schmaltz, other days I want to see everyone 26 and under with Tourigny first. So please forgive me if I change my view on next season roster construct day by day.

I think it’s all very fluid. BA I think is betting that a fresh start with a new staff will help make the young core in Keller, Dvorak, schmaltz, and crouse take their games to the next level. If they do we could be in better shape than we think if we also get decent goaltending. However, if those guys continue to falter, the RT excuse won’t be there any longer and big changes will be in order

Signing bonus day changed a few things. Kessel is due only another $850k for the rest of this contract. If we have a 68m budget, I’m not trading 25 goals for $850k just to get a draft pick in this draft, rather than the draft pick we can get at the trade deadline for the next draft. Kessel is off the board for me. He’s a keeper.

Meanwhile, OEL is still owed all 10.5m for this season. He simply MUST go. We have to get out of that. Tyler Myers is due only $2m in cash for next season. Loui Eriksson only $3m. The buyout window will open before he gets paid again. If we buy him out, it’s 2/3 the cost over 2x the term. That would mean $1m this season and $1m the season after.

If we trade OEL for Myers, Eriksson(buyout) and the 40th overall pick, that saves us $7.5m I’m real cash for next season. That’s over 10% of our total player budget. That covers Garland’s new contract AND a guy like Jani Hakanpaa.

Kuemper I put in the Kessel category. If we can figure out how to acquire a goalie we can expose, we might as well just keep Kuemper until the TDL. He can help us stay in games when healthy. I’m sure his trade value will be the same at the TDL as it is now, if he’s not injured. It might even be way higher.

So in sum, OEL is the only player that needs to go and everyone else is safe until the TDL, excluding any unknown exterior factors?

I'm fine with it as long as our return isn't compensative of a team getting out from under a contract. I get why some of us want to do it but I just don't see good asset management in that philosophy. A lot of that I'm sure is pointed at my belief in OEL as a top 2 defenseman for the long haul and that he was boned the last 4 years under RT. I do hate his contract and that he wears a C, but I'd much sooner strip the C and keep him on the team than trade him for short term dumps to move on.

I'd actually prefer to move Kessel and Kuemper sooner than later. Nothing against the players, Kessel was far and away from my shit list and Kuemper, while having a down year relative to his time with the Coyotes, has been a rock for us. They are the oldest and best valued of our pile of stuff we don't want to keep long term.

But how do we keep Kuemper and Hill? Unless there’s a side deal with Seattle to pick someone else or a trade happens in the next 2 weeks….one of them will be exposed and likely picked by the Kracken.

We can still only protect one goalie even if we acquire another.
