Don’t think we keep Kessel. If BA is shopping him as rumors suggest, the likelihood of him getting traded is even higher now with that bonus paid. If he can get us a decent pick or a near nhl ready prospect we jump on it I think

Some guys (G6 UFA) I think we should be looking at bringing in as tweeners with upside:

Quenneville
- Was showing decent in NJ before going to Chicago and seemingly falling on his face there. Might be worth taking a swing at.

Poganski, Reinke and Letunov
- All STL picks and likely guys with some upside that we could want playing in Tucson. Could help to further BA's vision from lower ranks.

Rafferty
- Seems like the best of the G6 RD. We have a lot of potential open slots, having Rafferty as a 7/8 D could work out great for both parties.

Borgman
- Tampa seems to be churning out guys from their ranks, I figure there is a high chance we'd be looking at a 3rd liner. He's also a fully grown man and if I'm recalling correctly, plays a BA style of game.

Olofsson
- Kind of in the same ilk as Borgman and Rafferty, guys we want traveling between the A and NHL and won't make us sad if someone claims them.

Kuemper, Kessel(50%) for Pettersson, Jarry, Poulin or something like that would be nice.

I don't see much point in spending 5.5m cash to buy a late first, plus the salary of whatever player replaces Kessel. That seems awful all around unless they're confident Kessel is a bad influence that needs to go.

Kessel, one of our top point producers costing us peanuts since the bonus has been paid and folks want to trade him?
Maybe at the deadline for a nice return, but now? Is it fear of him falling on his face and a TDL return being a bust?

Isn’t moving Kessel partially about changing culture? I do it if we get multiple picks (and one of those needs to be a 2nd/3rd).

Don’t think we could get a late first for Kessel? It’s a weak draft

Can we get Teddy Blueger in there too? I think we need insurance centers.

If we can get a top 15 pick in this draft for Kessel I'd probably do it. I want to win, and like his production from last year but it's good asset management.

I'm really clueless as to how he'll do with Tourigny. He is not his type of player, but Tourigny seems to have a good balance of being a players coach and getting the most out of players. His value could tank, stay the same, or go up during the season....

Then I’d go ahead and expose Jarry and protect Hill and hope Seattle doesn’t pick Jarry. If they do, I can live with that. If they don’t, then we still have a really good, really young goalie tandem. A risky one. That could turn ugly. Or could turn out great. Gamble.

We free up $8.8mil in cash to fill out other areas the roster. And we give Armstrong, Plandowski and Hepple a whopping FOUR 2nd round picks in their very first entry draft with the team.

Wow it didn't transfer over that well but this is my vision of our team. The biggest concern is defence and hole at LW.
Don't forget it sounds like Jaskin is coming our way and Provelnev too if he is NHL caliber.

If my math is right...

Kessel has a 8 mil cap hit. Cash owed this season is 6 mil, of which 5 mil was a signing bonus.

The Leafs pick up 15% of all of that because of retention on the trade to Pittsburgh.

So that means our cap hit is 6.8 mil, our cash owing is 5.1 mil, and our portion of the bonus was 4.25 mil.

We owe him only 850k cash for the remainder of the year now that the bonus has been paid.

If moved, we can still retain another 50% of the remainder.
He could be moved right before the deadline for next to no caphit for whomever takes him. That's a super flexible add for a contender that I think would be worth more then than now.

Kessel is probably the most misunderstood player in the league. Including on these boards, honestly. As a player, he's is too cerebral, it's really hard to understand what he brings without seeing him every day live.

Basically, the guy is incredibly creative offensively, and also he never wastes effort. For some defensemen that's seen a strength (Ryan Suter, Nick Lidstrom, Sam Girard etc), but many of us get pissed off that he doesn't finish checks, never even enters let alone wins board battles etc. But, he's also a world class passer and we really don't have a single player on our team who's an elite NHL finisher from more than 5 feet from the crease (Garland is our best finisher honestly, but not even the same league as someone like Tarasenko or Laine etc imo). So, last year Kessel was like "f*** it I'll stop looking for a pass' so he put up some goals, he still has a world class release with an accurate shot so good enough for 30-ish goals or so over the course of a full season. But he's still a much better set up guy and on the right team he can still help an above average sniper get to 40-50 goals for the next 2-3 years.

I'm really clueless as to how he'll do with Tourigny.

I don't think this would work at all, honestly. Tourigny's preaching accountability / fresh starts, what happens when Kessel doesn't finish any of his checks along the boards in the defensive zone? This will happen (and I say this as the largest Kessel fan on here). If Tourigny is telling the truth about accountability, Kessel gets fourth line minutes within the first 5-10 games of next year, maybe he even gets healthy scratched during the preseason. Do I think this is wise? Not necessarily. But Tourigny seems like a guy to treat everyone the same, if that's the case you can't overlook Kessel's lack of physicality.

If we can get a top 15 pick in this draft for Kessel I'd probably do it.

This, 100%.
Kessel's not part of our long term solution (too old), and next year we're a borderline playoff team if that. So, if we're able to get any kind of first for him, which is likely, I think we have to take it. No disrespect to Kessel at all from my side (some of you may disagree), but imo he's the wrong player for our team right now. Alternatively, might be worth holding onto him until next year's deadline for a potential higher return, but either way no way we should even consider re-signing him after his contract expires at the end of next season

I can't see how you could turn down any 1st round pick for Kessel. He's gone after this year and this team isn't winning the cup. I'd be shocked if someone offered a first round pick. After a 2nd for Stepan last year you'd have to at least start looking at blocks of marble for the eventual Armstrong sculpture.

Well it depends.Stephan brought in a second rounder and he wasn't that good.Kessel had a good year and is at a higher value.I think he could bring a late first rounder maybe.

Stepan didn't have a NMC and he's a center. His value was more universal. After the bonus was paid, he became very valuable to a cash team like Ottawa.

The number of teams that want to deal with Kessel (even at 3.4m) that Kessel is also willing to waive for might be real small.
