My apologies if this proposal is completely out to lunch, but if Garland is actually going to be moved would you guys consider the following trade:

To Col:
Kuemper (50%)
Crouse
Garland

To Az:
2021 Col first
2022 Col third
J. Barron
Kaut
Jost
Graves
Ranta
Compher

The way I see it:
Garland = 2021 first+Barron
Keumper 50%=Kaut+Ranta+Compher
Crouse=Jost+Graves+2022 third

How about Kuemper for Francouz and Graves?

I’d do that at 50% retained, but I would still like the Avs to acquire the other two players haha.
I personally have no interest in moving the other two.

18% on Kuemper makes the cash dead even for Arizona and saves Colorado 1.5aav in cap. Any further retention, and it starts costing Arizona budget space.

Though, I suppose Graves does fill an extra roster space for Arizona and leaves one open for Colorado. So with that, there may be some wiggle room for additional retention. Leaves less cash for UFAs but also leaves one less necessary UFA. Maybe they split the difference at 25%, or so?

34yo, last season, not in long term plans, no Tocchet feeding him ideal minutes, cut ties from the past and make it GMBA's team.

Expecting a return of a 2nd and a reclamation prospect.
So why not wait until the TDL? Let the Magic new relationship maker get the most out of Phil and get a better return?

I like Kessel and always have but I never realized until he was a coyote, how poor he was at the defensive side of the game. The points he produces amount to nothing when you consider how easy we are to score against when he is on the ice. He leaves us completely vulnerable.
So in my opinion he needs to go but trading him is more about maximizing what we get for him. I never liked this trade to begin with because he was on the downhill side of his career but it is only going to get worse. Phil the thrill is a great guy, funny, good point producer and so on but it is time for him to go. Is it best to trade him now or should we give the new coach a shot with him and see if he can raise his value more? who knows

Do the numbers bear out that Kessel is a defensive liability or is this an eye test. What is his GAR? And does that take into account goals against?

+2.1 GAR 5v5 offense
-4.3 GAR 5v5 defense

-2.2 GAR overall

He's a net negative 5v5. Okay PP player. Pens dumped him after he slipped to being a wash 5v5. Has been worse in AZ.

Garland for comparison:
+5.3 offense
-0.1 defense

+7.8 GAR overall (despite playing against tougher competition)

Maybe I don't understand the numbers but it appears your numbers for Garland's overall GAR are off.

There are more that go into a total, like penalty plus minus. Kessel doesn't draw any penalties because he doesn't know what contact is. Garland gets abused regularly, so he is among the league leaders in penalties drawn.

Sample size isn't ideal but the math points to replacing Kessel with a player like Bunting full time as being a net positive.

I think the points Kessel produces can be replaced easily by someone like Coleman, who would also provide positives in other ways. but we would likely have to overpay for him and he’ll have many other suitors

I don’t expect any moves to be made until after the expansion draft, but I do think we can get a pretty good piece for Kessel after the ED draft

Interesting comments re: Kessel trade, will be even more interesting to see what BA does.

It's funny when I think about what most posters want: Get rid of all vets, Kuemper/Raanta/OEL/Demers/Hjam/Goose/Kessel. Play all young guys because they have potential. No NHL team wins with a predominantly young inexperienced roster. The Oilers are a great example of trying this for years and losing. There needs to be a mix of vets and young players.
