Seravalli's Trade Targets: 20 names in play in the 'Summer of Jack' - Daily Faceoff

Frank Seravalli's Top 20 trade targets has Garland listed as #4. Interesting notes from Seravalli:

"Scoop: The Coyotes have not treated Garland like the player who was the heartbeat of their team. Garland’s camp, led by agent Peter Cooney, submitted two contract proposals (as requested by the club) on May 20 and there has been zero communication or dialogue since. “We’re just looking for Conor to be paid respectfully like the core player he was for the Coyotes,” Cooney told Daily Faceoff on Tuesday. It appears that will be elsewhere, which is no real shock given that Arizona nearly moved Garland in the days prior to April’s trade deadline."

I really didnt think Garland would be moved, but rumors like this make me think it is much more possible than I thought.

OEL comes in at #10...

"Scoop: The word around Arizona is everyone is available aside from Jakob Chychrun. That includes the captain. Last offseason, Ekman-Larsson only gave Arizona two options: Boston and Vancouver. There is more flexibility there this time around. But that is a very difficult contract to move in a flat cap world and there are plenty of questions about Ekman-Larsson’s recent and noticeable drop-off in play. The Coyotes are believed to be looking for a Ryan O’Reilly (to St. Louis)-type deal: pick, prospect, roster player and are willing to maybe take a smaller, less desirable contract in return."
This supports my belief that the Coyotes need to burn the house down and rebuild from the basement up. Seems like the Coyotes agree if the rumors are correct. Perhaps BA is the guy to lead the Coyotes back into contention in a few years, if he manages the rebuild correctly. Hell of a way to start, after Chayka caused us to lose a 1st.

But what really upsets me is if BA thinks this lowly of the roster, why didn't he do something at TTD, instead of giving the players a vote of confidence?

My guess is that he wanted to see if this group would either redeem themselves or hang themselves. And boy, did they ever hang themselves.

Making Garland feel like this is absolutely unforgivable. This is a HUGE strike against Bill Armstrong for me. This is absolute Chayka-shit, right here. Pathetic.

I'll get angry when I see where this goes. Until then, I'm not going to put much stock into the spin doctoring of a player agent who's looking for a first-liner payday for a second-line player.

Yeah that Garland snippet sounds more like agent speech to me. But it doesn't mean that BA is being too hard nosed about this. Garland is not a player I want to bring to arbitration and it feels like BA is saying if you don't like these two deals we will head that way.

Going to be an interesting offseason to say the least. Can't Tampa just be given the cup already so we can get going on it.

I'm excited for this cup finals. This will be the most exciting year for me since the Blues won it so I want to watch the games. Last years playoffs were kinda boring and I was disgruntled with the team's performance so I skipped watching a lot of games.

The Coyotes will be paying $15m more in cash this coming year for the exact same players they had last year due to upward contract adjustments. If you give Garland $5m or more, that's $20m+ more in salary for a team that didn't even make the playoffs. They've used up all the cheap subsidized years of Chayka's backloaded contracts.

The decision to potentially move everybody except Chychrun stems from this. There is no easy way to reconfigure the team given the above, so all options are being kept open. It is highly unlikely BA secures a net better NHL roster through trade. The short term improvements will need to come from coaching and FA.

Can't wait until the trades start mostly to get some actual real moves to talk about. I think in general, we Coyotes fans are punch drunk. Personally I'm more optimistic just because I've watched a lot of playoff hockey this season. Yeah Tampa with all of their stars has looked dominant at times but they are also way over the cap. Then you look at Montreal winning with goal tending, defense, effort and overall great structure and you have to believe we can get a lot better in those areas without a superstar. New York is excelling without a superstar as well. Most of the superstars are watching on TV just like us. There's hope without nuking the whole thing guys.

Well, I usually leave the trades and rostering stuff to @rt because he's better at it than I am, but for whatever it's worth I rebuilt the Coyotes roster in EHM with the following UFA signings:

Dougie Hamilton
Tucker Poolman
Jamie Oleksiak
Zach Hyman
Blake Coleman
Joel Armia
Erik Haula
Chris Driedger

...and, because it's EHM and not real life, I traded Kessel for cap space and a middling prospect and signed Gabriel Landeskog to a long term deal.

Halfway through the 2021/2022 season, we're in 5th place in the Western Conference and solidly in a playoff spot.

(I play this game because if I had to be limited to what happens with this franchise in real life, I'd sink into a deep depression.)

On Ray and Dregs, Dreger said he’d keep an on on LA for Garland. I guess they really want him. Maybe that’s who the Yotes were talking to about him last season?

I can’t see them giving up Turcotte or Byfield. 8th overall I guess is also likely a no-go. Rasmus Kupari and Tobias Bjornfot should be of interest to us. I’d honestly want both. I expect LA would scoff. But I’d want both.

It would make me puke to see Garland in a kings jersey, especially since if they get him and sign him he’d be a part of their core coming out of their rebuild, wrecking us each time we face them as we head into our (next) rebuild.
Different division, so that’s a plus.

Kaliyev?

He's a little like Kessel where he's kinda a weirdo but he gets it done offensively.

I’m trying to look at the bright side (it’s not easy) and think about getting a couple of high end prospects for Garland (like Kupari and Bjornfot) and one for Kuemper (like Bokk) and maybe even one in whatever OEL deal we make (Juolevi or Vaakanainen). These guys are all 20-22 years old and all NHL-ready right now. Maybe even try to get a desperate Fletcher to do Phil(50%) for Nolan Patrick. Another 22 year old.

Suddenly, we kinda have a future again. The likes of Kupari, Bjornfot, Bokk, Juolevi, and Patrick joining Keller and Chychrun in the under 23 set on the Coyotes and then allowing all of Hayton, Soderstrom, Jenik, and Maccelli to stay in Tucson to develop together.

The team is in such a weird spot of needing a rebuild but already having quite a few under 23 core pieces around. We just need to add some more to inject some new youthful blood into that core.

Chayka brought us outside into the rain with Kessel, Hall, and trading away and losing picks/prospects, but it was pouring a bit too hard. BA needs to bring us back inside to get our coat. Once that’s done we could have a future again

I’m not ready to play doomsday with Garland yet. Of course an agent is going to try and push the process along, and of course when an agent gives such a transparent response, the hockey insiders are going to jump all over it.

All Dreger said is IF Garland is available, he knows the Kings are interested. Ray Ferraro followed that up by stating if Garland is available, every team is probably interested.

I wouldn’t say there’s any real smoke to this yet, just typical agent negotiating tactics. Armstrong has been doing all of this by himself, as he’s trying to hire an assistant GM as well as a coach. Those need to be handled before a players contract does.

I like what I've seen. What are you thinking he tops out as? I think he's one of those guys you hang on to but he's basically a 3rd pairing guy. As long as he doesn't price himself off the team that is.

pretty much how I see him. Tops out as a just in case second pairing guy. Slight upgrade over Lyubushkin. Just stuck behind a pretty deep Winnipeg defense. Worth the shot and maybe with increased reps he gets better
