Prospect Info: Cossa Crushing it in Grand Rapids

Cossa needs this development. Yes he was a 1st round pick, but not top 5, not even the consensus best netminder in the draft. He also didn't have a great post draft performance on the big stage of world juniors. He's a 3-4 year project player in year 1 of the plan.

We just need to chill. Goalies take a long time, and if you were expecting him to be the starter in a year or two, you are likely going to be disappointed. Also, Toledo is likely a bad team and the ECHL doesn't exactly have stellar defence to begin with, on top of playing on 5th worst team in the league, which can throw goalies off. Of course it would be nice if he had like, 2.50 and .920 as numbers, but he doesn't.

Other thing is, he could have Hasek like numbers in the AHL or ECHL, and be a bad NHL goalie, as lots of goalies have been good at one and bad in the other. Pickard puts up good AHL numbers, but he stinks in the NHL as one example.

Toledo is realbad team. They have dropped to be 3rd worst of 28 ECHL teams on standings.

Cossa gets shelled every night. At least it's exact opposite experiment of easy WHL wins behind a strong team.

just out of curiosity since I don't follow the league what happened to them?

they lead the ECHL in regular season points last year and also made it to the finals of the leagues Playoffs

I don't watch them at all, but if look just on stats:

- They lost all their Top3 producing forwards from last season.
- They lost their Top producing defenceman.
- They lost 4/6 of their Top6 forwards.

They've scored only 2.64 goals per game at 2022-23 season.
They scored 3.85 goals per game at 2021-22 season. That was league-high number.

That scoring difference is so major factor, that I think it comes from there. It was superior team at last season, which it isn't anymore.

- Maybe they lost their prime players after some financial problems at corona time?
- Maybe they lost their prime players to higher AHL-level after AHL expansion?

I don't really know. But I can suspect it's someshow related to that regressed offence.

As much as I don't like Cossa as a 15 overall pick because I believe he got a bit carried on a stacked Edmonton team and failed to show up internationally against his peers, I can't deny that his team is absolutely trash and the guy I wanted (Jesper "The Wall"stedt) isnt doing much better.

So I will be crawling into my hole and see next year if he is good enough to be a starter for the Griffins.

I don't worry about future goalkeeper , it's easy to get someone like Ned or Husso in off-season , just do not draft no more in the first round goaley

I thought drafting goalies in the first round is like NFL teams drafting running backs in the first round. It's obsolete. Still surprised Yzerman made that pick.

Usually just the top goalie prospect gets picked in the 1st round and only if they're exceptional.
2021 - Cossa, Wallstedt
2020 - Askarov
2019 - Knight
2018 - None
2017 - Oettinger
2016 - none
2015 - Samsonov
2014 - none

I'm not surprised he picked a goalie since he did it before with Vas, but did not like the trade up to do it. Team needed a center so he traded up to pick a goalie, lol.

He wants his Vasilevsky for Detroit.

or Thomas McCollum.
You don't need a Vasilevskiy to win the Cup though. Teams make deep playoff runs, and even win Cups, with solid goalies and great teams around them. This isn't the 1990's anymore where you need a HOF goalie.

This franchise lacked goalie prospects but that doesn't necessarily mean a first rounder is the right answer.

Well, Cossa is who we have now. Nobody was predicting a 1st round goalie in 2022 or in 2023, so he was thought to be the best available. I was pretty critical of the pick in 2021 but I've come to terms with the pick and am hoping for the best.

What? We won twice in the 90s with non HOF goalie, Pens won twice without HOF goalie, Rangers won without HOF goalie, which is half the teams without a HOF goalie who won. You have never needed a HOF goalie to win, but in MTL 93 it was a major plus. Nowadays there is maybe 2 or 3 Elite goalies in the NHL, tops, then a plethora of guys who one year are really good, and then the next year either suck or are average.
