Prospect Info: Cossa Crushing it in Grand Rapids

Are we going to do this with every bad game Cossa has? This is going to be exhausting.

You're never going to believe this, but once when Andrei Vasilevskiy played in the AHL at age 20 he let in 5 goals on 14 shots. And another time 4 goals on 16 shots. Bust.

I’m with Pavel on this one. I wish they would let him settle in with one team. I think he will be our starter for many years but it’s will take a couple of seasons to get ready. I’m still glad we took him instead of Wallstedt

Like Cossa, you just need more seasoning. Soon you’ll understand that this isn’t a Cossa thing, rather people here overreact to every possible negative that you could ever conceive.

😂 Though there do seem to be some specific targets and a lot of dead horses

I guess Brattstrom didn't have enough veteran status to block the move after all.

HFBoards Red Wings, it's not your job to make excuses. That's all you guys do good! It's either a *Cossa* thing or a *Hossa* thing, or a *Dan Cleary* thing, or a *forum ban*!

Who used Forum ban?

Me.

I got a hundred pieces of net string. I'mma hang up one on the wall for every net I fill.

- You're gonna look real stupid trying to score with your skates untied. *Zadina gets crunched into tomorrow by a bodycheck*

Cossa is sub-.900 in both the AHL and ECHL. Getting pretty concerned about him in his D+2.
I want to like Cossa, but its pretty concerning to have a 1st round pick in the ECHL in their D+2. Add in the fact that he is struggling in the ECHL, and then add in the fact that he has statistically regressed since his draft year, and then add in the fact that Detroit struggles to develop goalies.

Put it this way, if Cossa were drafted in the 5th round, nobody would be talking about him being the goalie of the future.

On the positive side, I thought Cossa looked good in the prospect tournament and pre-season games. And its a pretty small sample size to start the year. Yzerman's other 1st round picks have all improved their value since draft day. At least Wallstedt has been just as bad this year. This just reaffirms my belief that it isn't worth drafting goalies in the 1st round.

If he was 5th round pick, people would have realistic expectations. Goalies as a rule of thumb should just be left to develop for a few years until you start paying attention to them. A 19 year old goalie is like a 16 year old forward.

Then , don't draft them in the first round

Cossa is still a hell of a lot more likely to turn into an NHL goalie than some random 5th round pick.
As I've explained before, it's not just that but the fact that he's a 6'6 goalie with fantastic athleticism. The first round pick absolutely makes sense because if he hits, he's going to be one of the most valuble player at his position. He's a lottery ticket kind of pick. Either you hit big on a goalie every GM would love to have or he doesn't hit but it's ok because you felt he was worth the risk in the mid 1st round with the players remaining. It's a calculated risk after getting Edvinsson earlier.

Also, goalies have really weird trajectories when it comes to their development, so I really couldn't care less about his stats at his age in a pro league. They say nothing about his future. He kept growing too so it's going to take more time. I'm not surprised one bit by his "struggles". He's more just very inconsistent, if anything.

Btw, this thread's title is the best. Please don't stop :)

ECHL stats should be taken with a grain of salt. Defense is pretty awful in that league and many times goalies have putrid stats.

All stats for goalies should be taken with a grain of salt when no one is watching the games. People here dont watch the Walleye but are gonna freak out about 3 goals and 23 shots against? That could easily be two 3 on 1s and a 5 on 3 goal but no one is watching they just want to freak out about his stat line.
