Prospect Info: Cossa Crushing it in Grand Rapids

If he was 5th round pick, people would have realistic expectations. Goalies as a rule of thumb should just be left to develop for a few years until you start paying attention to them. A 19 year old goalie is like a 16 year old forward.
Expecting a 1st round pick to develop and not regress is pretty realistic to me. He hasn't been impressive since his draft year. It's not like he has been improving, he's completely overwhelmed in the AHL and he's struggled in the ECHL.

All stats for goalies should be taken with a grain of salt when no one is watching the games. People here dont watch the Walleye but are gonna freak out about 3 goals and 23 shots against? That could easily be two 3 on 1s and a 5 on 3 goal but no one is watching they just want to freak out about his stat line.
Some of us watch Toledo when Cossa starts, posters would be shocked at the amount of soft goals he allows. Like last night for instance, the 1st/3rd goals he could do nothing about, but the 2nd goal was extremely soft, letting in an unscreened shot off the rush on the ice. Or Friday, where he allowed three goals. The first two could've been saved and the 3rd one was a backhand shot from the bottom of the circle.

ECHL stats should be taken with a grain of salt. Defense is pretty awful in that league and many times goalies have putrid stats.
Then why is he playing there if the league is terrible? Does not seem like a good league to develop prospects.

Yzerman did say that he wants to see Cossa challenged?

So, would you put him logging easy wins at juniors or hard wins in a league with bad defence?

Goalie develops most behind a bad defence, with my logic. Because he has to stand on his head like Hasek on Buffalo days.

Yep! There was a backup goalie, (can't remember his name) from 3 or 4 years ago, that said, playing in the NHL was a LOT more easy than the AHL or the ECHL, because the defensive coverage can be so poor by comparison that even as a goalie playing things right, can have a bad night just from bad turnovers and coverage. Also, Toledo may be a bad team, which adds to that.

We really won't know what he will be until he inevitably makes or doesn't make the NHL. Lots of good NHL goalies have had bad AHL and ECHL stats, while plenty of career minor leaguers have done well in the lower leagues, but sucked in the NHL. Reality is, goalies take a long time, even the very best ones. There is a reason most don't become good starters until 24-25+ years old. Even Marc-Andre Fleury who started his career young in the NHL, but it didn't exactly go well for the first 3 or so years.

This makes you wonder if we made a mistake………….not really, but I bet Cossa gets a chance or two in his career

For everyone clamoring for Wallstedt, he isn’t exactly lighting it up either.

Wallstedt: 1-0-3 3.12GAA .899SV% (4 games)
Cossa AHL: 1-1-0 3.50GAA .851SV% (2 games)
Cossa ECHL: 4-2-1 2.39GAA .913SV% (7 games)

All things considered with Cossa going back-and-forth vs. Wallstedt having a set team they aren’t really that far apart in performance. Wallstedt is a clear backup on his team as well.

Should also be noted that Cossa is 2nd in games and wins and top 10 in GAA (7th) and SV% (8th) for all goalies with a minimum of 5 games in the ECHL. He’s doing very well for a super young rookie goalie.

Atleast Wallstedt scored a goal ;)

In 5 years time we know who was the right pick, way too early to judge based on a couple of games.
