Cossa finally getting some consistency? This is wild
Maybe not quite yet since prior to these two he had three games at 90% or less. But definitely improving his save-% big time recently. Hard to say how much of it is individual improvement since Lethemon is suddenly also putting up crazy stats (96%+) during the team's ~20 game hot streak. Overall Toledo has made a pretty massive turnaround in 2023.

Another 2 apples for Tyutyayev last night.

Toledo keeps the streak going with another shutout, this time with Lethemon in goal. Only 1 goal allowed in their last 4 games, pretty amazing.

Dan Watson will probably start getting some AHL attention soon, maybe the next GR coach?

Are Sebrango and Viro still there?

I'm in no rush with Cossa, but it's nice to see him make a move to above .900 SV%. Also I hate that spellcheck always wants to change his name to Costa.

Cossa... The #1 netminder in the draft selected, a first round pick, getting a shut out in the ECHL. Sorry it just doesn't get me worked up thinking he'll backstop the team any time soon. Not comparing him to McCollum but he has certainly slid the wrong way in over-all and prospect rankings for his class.

After the cushy situation that Cossa had with the Oil Kings, it should come as no surprise he has struggled some this year with all the changes he has had to deal with, as that situation was nothing like what he was going to face in the pros. I think that was part of the game plan with him this year, deconstruct to reconstruct.

The process is starting to yield some results. Next season will be big for him.

I think the unrealistic part was expecting a 2021 pick to be close to ready for the NHL within 2 years.

Even if the kid was completely destroying the ECHL, I wouldn't expect him in Detroit until the fall of 2024 at the absolute earliest.

Goalies often take a LONG time.

Update for this!
I added Lethemon and also team points in the right axle. Gets a bit messy but adds some more context.

I had gone back and started mapping this as well after someone inquired. If anyone wants to see the data behind the charts, and with it set up with games played as the X-axis to remove the noise that dates create, I can continue to share it periodically.

I highlighted the three exceptionally poor performances in the data just so people can see what is happening with those massive dips. Removing those 3 stinkers increases his season save % to 91.59%, or in other words, 3 noteworthy bad games costs him 1.4% on his season long stats.

Anyways, this will be interesting to follow, and as they get updated, I encourage people to link this up with some video hunting. I'm not sure what is on Youtube, but I have just scoured the opponents Twitter feed the day after a game and watched a few of the goals that Cossa has given up. You'd be shocked by how pedestrian some are and how completely unstoppable others are, just based on the caliber of play. Not to say this is anything close to real scouting, but that's the REAL context behind these numbers. A game giving up 4 goals and a sub-.900 save percentage looks a hell of a lot different when you see the tap ins and wide open cross slot looks.

Goalies don't have a linear development path, he's not a 1st rounder forward playing in the ECHL.

How is the game split between Lethemon and Cossa?

Also opponent strength would be nice to know.

Earlier in the season (2022), Cossa was consistently starting roughly 2 out of every 3 of games. As of recent, it seems like they have gone to more of a true rotation, roughly 1 on, 1 off.

I don't know enough about opponent strength to comment on this, but they do tend to play one team in a weekend set of 2-3 games, and with their current rotation, they tend to play the same opponents pretty frequently, so the extent of opponent influence is fairly low. But it's hockey, so there's always unpredictability. Sometimes the second game of a back to back works in favor of a fresh goalie because the opponents are dragging their feet, and the next time they aren't because they came off a loss and have a bit more jam to their game. I wouldn't put much stock into competition.

Yeah, that sounds about right, especially if they face those same teams back-to-back and both play 1.

I'll leave it to you and others to look up 1st round goalies or forwards that left junior for the ECHL. I can't recall any. I'd also argue they do have a linear development path to the NHL, it simply is a different timeline/angle than a typical forward. X axis is not 2-3 but 4-5 ( get the point).

I think the unrealistic part was expecting a 2021 pick to be close to ready for the NHL within 2 years.

That certainly was not my expectation. I did, however, expect him in GR, not the ECHL (as a back-up). Special goalies, and some flash in the pan types, make it in 2.

Disagree. If that gig were cushy, he'd have led them to the championship. He did not. Putting that aside, he laid an egg in both his Junior World efforts.

If the goal was to deconstruct, it's working.
