What is going on and has been going on does not appear to be uncoordinated or piecemeal.

And how would you nationalize factories? Government takes over equity ownership?

You make/use a law that say that the factories have to do what you tell them to do. Of course picking up the bill is a given. I imagine the defense production act or whatever it is called is about that.

Being a bit of a WWII junky, it’s quite amazing what these countries could do. And we would see the same here. But a few weeks is just such an extremely short time. 4 months and it would be different. A year and you could transport every corona patient to the moon. But you cannot work around a bottle neck, it’s not magic. Some things takes a little time and they can do everything else in parallel, but some equipment must be in place to make masks and you can’t make that equipment in the blink of an eye.

Because China can clamp down to an extent that we simply won’t. The Chinese were using drones and the military to enforce strict lockdown. To confront this there needs to be a very strong initial reaction.

That simply has not happened here. We are seeing the result and the worst is yet to come for us all.

ty - looked it up. Never knew they were using drones. We still have people going about their business and socializing daily.

Cuomo is having second thoughts about the mass quarantine.

The people in charge in Sweden have basically not shut down anything. The state epidemiologist is taking so much heat, Sweden is basically the western state taking the fewest quarantine measures despite having a fairly early wide spread outbreak. Everything is basically open, from schools to restaurants and what not. They shut down universities since they can teach online. That is about it, and public gatherings exceeding 500.

Swedes Try Laissez-Faire Model in Controversial Virus Response

The guy in charge could be right or wrong, no matter what, he got to get points for having an extremely strong psych and not just doing what everyone else is doing...

The UK was trying that herd immunity approach but reversed course very quickly. I hope they have plenty of ICU beds and ventilators in Sweden. More will die than needed if too many get sick at once and overwhelm their capacity it treat their most critical cases.

I would not want to be part of that experiment. My family on my fathers side is from Norway. I know the Scandinavian countries are renowned for their healthcare systems but that is one very large and dangerous bet they are making.

Cuomo: Not sure if closing all businesses, keeping everyone home was 'the best public health strategy'

As a state employee, there have been internal emails going around confirming this
There came a point where all choices were bad. Yes the young could infect the old at home.

it would be much much worse if everyone was still riding the subway together. Talk about busy enclosed spaces. One cough from an infected person would spread the virus for hours as people come and go. I do see the hardship coming from the economy. I would prefer to be alive and face a recession than dead and avoid one. But hey, that’s just me.

we really haven't even told people to stay inside...they have given so many reasons and excuses to go outside that I bet people are outside more than they have ever been just cause. so its not even an enforcement issue...it would be different if govt officials were taking it super serious and then people didn't listen and couldn't be control.

Yikes, they are venting two patients on a single ventilator at a lot of these hospitals. That is horrific because thats pretty terrible for the patients. Tough choice. 1 patients gets no ventilation and dies or both patients get sub-optimal ventilation. A Sophies Choice.

An article from Fox News? I... okay.

He was offering an honest reflection on where the state is and the decisions he'd had to make given imperfect information, while simultaneously expressing empathy that the consequences will obviously be bad for the economy. That's it.

Context is everything. This article is... written from/toward a certain point of view.

I'm starting to fight with my wife at home and we're just approaching two weeks together at home. She and I have differing views. She does not want me going out for anything, not even groceries or essentials. This thing is going to cause a huge and generational psychological toll.

Called 311 and confirmed that NYC Health and Hospitals is not testing anyone unless they are being hospitalized, even if you are showing symptoms. Kind of surprised this hasn't gotten more attention in the media. The city has essentially given up on testing people unless they are getting admitted into a hospital.

The headline is dramatic, the quotes in the article aren't misrepresented IMO. I watched the press conference live, it is obvious the economic feedback they are getting is devastating, we're only ~two weeks into the stay at home, and they are considering hybrid strategies. But I wouldn't have posted the article had I not seen something affirming that new guidance is in the works, at least for the state workforce, and the private sector logically follows.

she sounds like a nice lady that just wants to keep you safe so you entertain the rest of us by posting all day...try showing some gratitude LOL

We shall see. (I have to admit, I missed the conference today.) Also, I don't know that the private sector logically follows.

And given the scenes in Elmhurst/Mount Sinai hospitals and the stats below:

I highly doubt Andrew wants people riding the subways again any time soon.

But I'm not privy to the info you are. Perhaps he will be sending people back to work soon. That would be an... interesting decision... given the state of things (and, more cynically, the political capital he's acquired via his performance to date).

those numbers aren't even doubling each day, clearly time to get back to work LOL

Which side benefited from your WW II production?

We wouldn't really be able to do much without our private vendors... And I would hope he wasn't using the state workforce as a guinea pig.

To be clear - this is not to say he's sending everyone back to work in a week. I am sure they're discussing several different strategies on how to implement something that recognizes the severity of the health risk while softening the economic impact. But I would expect to see some policies put forth by next week to spur economic activity which is a different angle to what has been purely a containment strategy to this point.
