My cousin's stepdaughter (who is a student in NYC, but had since returned home to rural Virginia) is feeling really ill. No word yet on whether or not she has it. My cousin herself – who, BTW, is a GP in the area – has gone for testing.

The reports have been all about the big cities, but it'll be everywhere within the next two weeks.

Do you know where in Virginia? I have a friend that lives down there.

If you were traveling and you're trying to get back home, that's one thing.

If you have the audacity to travel FROM home right now, I have absolutely no empathy.

1) You're inconsiderate

2) In two weeks or less it ain't gonna be any better where you're running.

Ohhh boy. For the sake of our country we need some of those cities to not follow the same trajectory.

Edit* I said cities but in most of those states it is confined to major metro areas.

Vexingly, that list didn’t include NC, which I believe is around 50 per 1m.

Mandatory stay-at-home starts in my county Thursday morning. We’re at 100 per 1m here.

Heard the Florida AG today say there are 100 flights a day from New York to Florida and they are telling all the passengers that they will have to self quarantine for 14 days.

How in the hell do you enforce this?

Closing the Florida beaches should have been done already. I think a lot of them are closed now. You have the college kids who gather in large groups will be sick from NY and not even know it and bring more of that shit down there and spread it.

My folks are still down in their house. They usually come back to NY this time. They drive back and forth from NY to FL, so would be more isolated, but my sister and I told them to stay down there a couple of more weeks. This thing won’t last long on surfaces or the air in 80 degrees and sunny weather but still have to be social distant. Spring Breakers are the opposite of social distance.

Also, Disney World ain’t opening anytime soon. The mouse can afford it to stay closed a little longer.

Saw this woman coming out of the Ladies room… I dunno, something bout her seemed kinda off!

The 28% figure is the rate of positives of New Yorkers being tested.

New York's infection "attack rate" is five times higher than the rest of the US, health expert warns

That's honestly better than I thought it would be.

The 40-80% figure, I believe, is over the entire life of the virus, depending on how soon the vaccine comes. I don't anticipate that we'll see that many in one wave. There's nowhere on Earth where the numbers even approach that. Not Italy, not China.

The bad news about that figure is that this is likely coming back until we get the vaccine and we'll have to distance again after a break if that's the case. The good news is we'll be prepared and measures are likely to begin as soon as it hits.

So I wouldn't panic over either of those numbers.

@Machinehead is back!

We live in Nj and have pretty much been on lockdown since 3/14. We’ve been out for walks/runs and in the backyard but that’s it. Thankfully I stocked up with food weeks ago and we’ve gotten contactless food deliveries for some perishables. I know it isn’t easy getting those as I’ve had to wait until the stroke of midnight to place the order within a minute or two or all of the windows are gone.

Im surprised the city didn’t take a more aggressive approach but I know it’s difficult to tell the center of the world to stop moving.

Before this thing is “over” and we can all go about our business freely I think there has to be ample (like a majority of the population, sick or healthy) testing available so we have the data we need and a vetted treatment that can cut the severity of the disease that is also readily available.

My family won’t be breaking our quarantines until then. We have several family members who have immune system deficiencies, recently out of surgery, older or history of respiratory issues. I’m doing it as much for them as I am for immediate family and my myself.

Unfortunately I have very little faith in our elected officials going all the way to the top to send the right message. The world and country we live in revolves around the dollar and there is an extremely small portion of the population like myself who don’t prioritize that ahead of their extended family, let alone strangers who might be susceptible.

A vast majority of Americans won’t come close to having the self discipline necessary to see this through correctly.

There will be a time where the numbers start to dip and everyone is going to run out into the streets hugging each other. Sounds nice but that may cause this pandemic to become even worse.

When things are lifted, I won’t be leaving for another two weeks, possibly longer until those conditions are met and the science makes sense to me. We are in this for the long haul!

Is that infection rate or people tested testing positive? Also, if 80% of NYC is infected then this virus isn't that dangerous.

Edit: Just googled this. My parents will be decimated.
That is a projection of expected infection rates, state-wide

May be impossible to enforce, but it could be something that dissuades people from making the trip. If you are going for less than two weeks, you'll be expected to quarantine the entire time and if it does not stop people, they could set up the locations in their terminal. Depends on how far the state is willing to take it.

Have to think those making longer trips are planning on a return home from school or going to get out of NYC in general and possibly staying out.

WaPo has NYC as one of the six Amazon warehouses with an outbreak, so just a reminder to handle packages carefully.

So many bogus statistics flying around, I keep reading 9 out of 10 people tested don't have it, but NY itself is at 28%...

Curious on mortality rate, what's more accurate deaths/total confirmed cases or deaths/cases with an outcome?
