many of my friends who collected cerb are those types who somehow (well, I know how but,) never paid a dollar in taxes in their adult life.
The idea that they have to pay approx 30% tax on their CERB is foreign to them. Now, the first $22K (?) earned is not taxable, (sorry, i've never earned so little that my earnings wasn't taxed), but it likely means not the entire amount of cerb collected will be taxed...
But if you worked part time, or a partial portion of the year, those earnings will be added to cerb, and quickly the overall earnings annually will be well into the taxable income threshold.
My friend who didn't work a single day during covid, and collected almost the full amount, isn't going to pay much due to the untaxable threshold. But another friend who worked 3 months, plus whatever time cerb was paid, will be well into the tax threshold, and she doesn't have a dime to pay taxes.
Her story to me was "what, what's Canada going to do? I just won't pay".
Oh to be 30 years and dumb as bricks.
