You must be either young or very fortunate to not have the life experiences to know that good people do stupid shit. You think by educating people they are going to make the right choice?

I'll give you an example. there was a person in NB, they just got back from international travel. The first thing she did when she got home was visit her Mom at an old folks home, then she went to Costco and St. Hubert's. She didn't self isolate she didn't quarantine for 14 days like she had been educated to do. She knew right from wrong but because she felt good, felt healthy she didn't give it a second thought. Well this educated person started the first major outbreak in Moncton at a LTC facility and in the general population too. I'll give you a second example an educated person in NL went to a wedding after international travel, she didn't isolate didn't follow protocols , protocols she knew she was required to follow, she didn't and well over 100 people caught Covid-19... when education does not work, then the government steps in.

Our government has an obligation, a duty to protect its people. We all noticed what happened down south when the government gave their people the "freedom" to do as they please, 1/5th of all deaths in the world..

Don’t make assumptions about me, and you’re not listening to what I’m saying. I never said anything about people not having to isolate or quarantine after travelling. I’m talking about going to work and opening businesses.

Sounds like you're not a small business owner. I am and let me tell you brother, once you know you have to come up with $50k/month to keep the doors open, you tend to get real worried about interruptions in business or someone not paying you because they aren't getting paid. It's so easy to sit there and say "suck it up, you should have been been prepared for losing $500k/yr" when it ain't you. And I'm a *really* small business.

Yep, small business has it tough.

Lots of individuals as well, as they lose their jobs. Been there a few times, twice by choice (you know leaving the military is considered quitting your job?), once by the need to get bigger dividends to shareholders, a company making billions but I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact I was in my late 50's ;-). I took a labour job until I could find something in my skillset, when you have a family to support no job is beneath you! Went from making $50 an hour to $12. It was nice not being behind a desk for a few months.

I think we know how the virus is spread though, don't we?

The government is not spreading it.
The government is not putting people into hospitals.
If the hospitalizations go down things will open up.

When the government cuts off funding those that lost their jobs things will open up. How long would anybody follow the rules if they had zero dollars coming in?

They are already going to make an announcement Monday on reopening the economy in Ontario.

They win a majority if an election is called (if the polls are right}.

And that means people aren't getting their second dose and there are warnings now that means mutations will happen as a result. What a disaster.
Yes I wish Trudeau would shoot straight with people. Tell us da truth. Not what we want to hear. I think you are right. I know myself I fire people very quickly when they tell me what they think I want to hear rather than da truth. I can't support him anymore and I am generally a small L liberal. We need a big change in party back to a central position.

So you want the government to babysit? Guess you like the idea of Big Brother knowing everything you do as well.

So we should all suffer because they are stupid people out there?

Should we all lose the right to drive because some people drive irresponsibly?

People make choices, they know the risks, we have all seen the commercials and ads and constant messages from medical professionals. People know the dangers of smoking, yet the government still sells cigarettes.
Let’s put our trust in Trudeau, who has stolen millions of dollars from taxpayers illegally and doesn’t have to answer to it. These are the people whose guidance we should follow and you expect them to be able to protect us? Get real

There's no reasoning with them. I don't even attempt it.

There is risk in being a small business owner, you chose that path. When we hit recessions that are not Covid related, who do you blame then?

In a recession, the government doesn't force you to shut down.

And there's risk in getting sick and dying. As I said before, why should I care about your concerns when you dismiss mine so easily?

You’re right, but they failed when it comes to travel restrictions, increasing medical infrastructure, and vaccine securement and distribution. That is just as bad in my book because they are effectively punishing all of us for their mistakes.

Never would have thought I'd say the words "I miss Chretien and Martin." :)

Not sure what to say. You saw the official stats I provided. The US recorded 60,000 flu deaths in 2018 which sounds about right with the number I provided for Canada. How that equates to Alberta having ten time your share of 20,000 Covid deaths is beyond me.

What the hell are you talking about?

Big difference. If it’s a recession because of valid economic reasons than there is nothing you can do about it. When it’s a BS lockdown that serves no purpose, than yes, you can blame the government for their horrible decision making and planning

Again you need to separate "serves YOUR purpose" and serves A purpose. It's preventing the Hospitals from being overwhelmed. It's preventing mass casualties.

So lets test the "serves no purpose" statement... Canada with it's serves no purpose mitigation has so far lost 0.05% of its population to Covid or 20,486 people. Compared to countries like Sweden and the USA who took no or few mitigation steps. Sweden lost 0.12% (12028) of its population and the US lost 0.14% (453,853) of its population. If Canada had taken Sweden Herd Immunity approach, using Sweden's #'s, we would have lost 24,464 more people. If we followed the US "Freedom" model we would have lost 31,264 more people. Who knows perhaps one of the 24k to 31k lives that were saved in Canada because of these "serves no purpose" regulations would have been you...

Yes, the government was too easy handed.

When given suggestions not to travel, people still chose to travel. That's is what happens when you give people freedom, they chose what is best for their own personal wants.
When the government let private companies take over LTC, they left it up to those companies to take care, and of course private business has one objective profit. That means cutting everything as much as possible, including cheap labour. Private business is in love with cheap labour.
When the government let our abilities to create vaccines erode over the years, it was about money. Private companies are just in it to make money, so if they can make more money taking their business to another country that is what they'll do.

Not likely with with the conservatives deciding against the absolute lay up that was Peter McKay

If the government didn't shut down these business would still be struggling, most consumers don't want to risk catching Covid.

Because my path saves lives and yours is selfish.

Ohhh can I make some more assumptions about you internet tough guy? I'm REALLY good at reading people.. LIKE REALLY... REALLY GOOD...

Doesn't match my experience. The restaurants I went to when they were finally allowed indoor dining had lineups every day.

The restaurants I went to had the exact opposite. The busiest restaurant in town told me that since the 2nd wave people are just not coming, nothing to do with the government rules. You went to a crowed restaurant during a Pandemic... and you have asthma ….?

I think you keep confusing me with other people. No asthma. Bald though, sucks. And no, there have been no crowded restaurants for months and months because even when they were allowed to open, they were restricted to 10 customers. And even if it was crowded, I go to get the f away from work and family for an hour. I find the most isolated spot and sit by myself and enjoy my food, beer and conversations with people like you (no sarcasm).

Anyway, not sure what to say, our experiences are very different. I can tell you for sure though that small businesses want to be open, that's not arguable.

When they open up again, I hope it's not with rules that they have to close by 10..

My wife loves to go to bed early, and with baseball practice in the evenings, I enjoyed going to the local pub to watch the Leafs on the West Coast.

Now with more games in the west this year, I hope I can do that again
