Again, we side with Brooks here: The teams signed these players under the terms of the previous CBA, the contracts were approved by the NHL and, we believe, allowing teams to lock up their own assets – that they drafted, trained, marketed and built around – for as long as they damn well please is good for business in the NHL. At least for the team, if not for the diminishing results from the player with that contract.

But because Gary Bettman’s GM buddies made him look aloof and made the 2005 lockout look like a gigantic waste of time through these contracts, they were retroactively punished for contracts that Bettman’s League deemed legal under the previous cap.

Of course, the blame falls to the NHLPA here for giving up those 40 players in the negotiation, right?

Richards attended some of the negotiating sessions. He wasn't one of main PA members of the negotiating. Players would come and go. Most of those guys were too busy doing their own thing.

The later the player retires brings a harsher penalty. Even Richards is traded,the Rangers still get screwed.

The annoying thing is the Flyers traded Richards and Carter with long term deals. The Flyers take zero cap penalty if those players retire before the SPC expires. If LA trades Richards to another team,those teams are the hook for cap recapture. If LA trades Carter,same situation. Philly signed Carter to the contract. Traded him to Columbus. Those teams walk away with no penalty. The MOU states Philly gets away with no penalty because the trades occurred before the new CBA. The NHL proposals included Philly getting hit with a penalty but that changed when the new CBA was struck.

Beyond the glaring need for a top-four defenseman, preferably one with a big, right-handed shot that can lead the power-play, the Rangers need to address their lack of depth up the middle. Derick Brassard turned out to be an absolute gem after coming to New York in a trade at the deadline in April, but they need to upgrade from their current crop of centermen. Considering Richards could very well be bought out and Brian Boyle had a disappointing season, the Rangers need to find some help in that area. Washington’s Matt Hendricks may be an option, but the Rangers may choose to address this via trade instead. Considering the acquisition of John Moore, the Rangers could entertain the option of parlaying young blue-liner Michael Del Zotto for a talented young center while continuing JT Miller and Oscar Lindberg’s development from within the organizaion. The Rangers will also have some time to consider how to make up for the loss fo the middle-of-the-lineup guys whose absence was so conspicuous during the regular season. Think versatile, rugged, hard-nosed players like Brandon Prust, Brandon Dubinsky and Ruslan Fedotenko.

How do the Rangers view Miller and Lindberg? Torts really likes Miller. He hurt his wrist during the season. Gordie Clark spoke to a Swedish paper during the SEL playoffs. He said the Rangers were surprised at how Lindberg's game had become more complete and he became an offensive player.

They could trade DZ for a winger if they feel comfortable in their young guys at center.

Alexander Burmistrov sticks out as fitting the bill in terms of age and position for sure (natrual center that can play wing). 8th overall 2010.

I saw Burmistrov play in the AHL a couple of times this season. Burmistov is a very talented hockey player, who got a ton of "quality" in him. He is also pretty decent on the PP. Natrual playmaker. His downside is easily that he has problems putting together his game in NA and with consistency. He was rushed to the NHL by the Thrasers at the age of 19, and when a kid is rushed you often get a player that is inconsistent. Part of the game is there, part of the game is not there. Its hard to catch up/build a plat form as a 19 y/o in the NHL.

As to center vs left wing etc. Id say go all for center. Our wingers will fight along the boards in the neutralzone and play their sniping game/forechecking game in the attacking zone. We could litterary have 8 great wingers, and still have the problems we have in our transition game and puck possesion game. Its the same when Gabby and Nash is out there as when MZA and Pyatt are out there. Bobby Ryan wouldn't help one bit there. I mean Ryan costs alot of money and assets, its a big move to make in light of how little he will help our huge problem areas (transition game and PP). We have a ton of more or less sniper wingers for the PP. But we are really short on playmaking ability.

My wish list easily starts with a right handed PPQB. Then I'll come to centers. Brassard can play on the wing. A center like Burmistov can also play on the wing, so can many other centers (not Stepan though). You can easily play Brassard with Lindberg for example.

Slats just can't afford keeping making changes here. Consistency has been just as big of a problem as personell. We just cannot forget that. We have Dorsett. We have Powe. We have Boyle. We have Haley. We have Pyatt. Torts gotta be able to make something work with those names.

People say that we won't resign Clowe due to the concusions. Well who will? Who will give him 4m per for 6-7 years after a string of concussions like that???

We have money if Richards is bought out. Is it impossible that we can give Clowe either a 3 year deal with decent money or a 1 year term of 4-4.5m per (to let him prove himself)?

There are stupid GMs in this league, but will someone really be so stupid so that they give Clowe a blank cheque?

How exactly did they cheat? If anything, the NHL clarified the rule and made contracts like Richards not "circumventing" anything. They made the rule clear and the Rangers followed it with Richards. Why should they be punished for following a rule the NHL clarified after Kovalchuk?

I don't see it as being punished. They are re-levelling the playing field. They're matching the cap dollars to the dollars paid to the player.

Because then a few teams would have a cap advantage on others. You can still front load contracts, yes, but if you have a net cap benefit when the player retires, they will carry a cap charge that squares it.

I know how it works. I just don't get how they could change how contracts work in middle of the life of the contract. It's completely unfair to teams that followed the NHL's rules on it. Something like this should have been grandfathered in, instead of ****ing teams who have these contracts.

But the extent of the "****ing" in this case is matching the cap hit to dollars paid, like every other contract in the league.

Just a simple contract like Scott Hartnell's wouldn't use this formula.

But almost every contract 's cap hit will match it's dollars paid out in the end. I think contracts that are 4 years should use the formula too, but it would be hard to abuse it using a 4 year deal because the amount of cap benefit would be limited, and for any player over 35 it will count in full anyways.

Not if they retire.. Look at Max Talbot's contract as well. He could easily retire in his last season on his contract and there would be no punishment.

Yeah, I don't know why they set the threshold to 7 years, but Talbot would have a net benefit of €1 million and would be retiring at 32.
