The player agent projected the 14-15 cap to be $66M-$67M. Then $70M. That's more than fair. The NHL shut the league down for 4 months and they really didn't accomplish much. Thankfully this will be a normal off-season with no lockouts for another 7 years at least. 9 years without either side terminating after 8 years. Its a 10 year CBA with a mutual termination after 8 years.

The Rangers need to get on the same page. They trade for Nash. They had Gaborik and Callahan on the right side. Nash played both wings in Columbus. Torts decides to move Gaborik to the left side and keep Nash on the right. They gave up Dubinsky who barely played in the playoffs last season. AA who was up and down. They added Nash. Torts kept banging the point about losing the middle of his line-up in the trade and in free agency. Prust was a fourth liner. Fedotenko was that important? Torts called the Nash move a "lateral" move two weeks ago. It didn't help Richards has been terrible. Boyle was awful until the playoffs. The front office and the coach don't seem to be on the same page.

DZ would be an excellent fit on Edmonton. Jordan Eberle has the long term 2nd contract. The Rangers don't give out $6M per 2nd contracts. Another issue Eberle plays the right side. Someone like Eberle without that contract and he plays either LW or C.

In my company that would mean that someone down the food chain would get to feel the heat and fast. But that seems hardly likely here. Groundhog Day it is - over and over again...

We could of course use another good forward, and a good playmaking forward could really help our PP (we just have a great shortage of players who are comfortable handling the puck).

But -- unless we get like a forward in the mold of a younger MSL, Datsyuk/Zetterberg, or someone like that, who really are good with the puck all over the ice and especially great at getting the puck up ice -- I don't think it changes the fundamental flaws this team have.

Something that undoubtedly would help us alot though, that is a good puckmoving D. In three areas really: i) he would help us get up ice, ii) he would help us creating scoring chances after getting stuck in the corners, and iii) he would help us on the PP.

Torts is an extremely one dimensional coach, right now atleast (last season he talked about towards the end of the year about being more constructive with the puck). But he doesn't cripple his players and that is a good thing. Its like obvious that he teaches one thing, but if a player that knows what he is doing, does something else and it works Torts will not get on that players back. That was very obvious when a player like Vlac Prospal (and also Fedetenko) was here, he would often reverse on the attacking blueline when we had no chance to put pressure on a forecheck and start over instead and I litterary saw Torts pat him on the back several times for it. Thoose plays are obviously something that is never drawn up here in NY. Dan Boyle is another example. He is as far from a "Torts type of D" that you can get, but Torts loved him and Boyle was great under Trots. If we had a "Dan Boyle" in his prime, we would just become that much harder to play against. A player like that would definitely make us so much less one dimensional. He would help us get up ice. He would help us on the PP. He would give us a punch that we just don't have today once in the attacking zone.

We have 4 LD's right now, and two RD's with Girardi (who I think core in the room as much on the ice). I think a Moore-McIlrath 3rd pairing could become a force in the NHL a tad sooner than people might expect.

If we could get a left handed playmaker who is elite on the PP, you gotta look at that. Yakubov/Eberle could of course have a big impact on the PP, which certainly would help. But I don't at all believe in getting someone like Bobby Ryan. That player would be very expensive to get, would cost alot having, and wouldn't fix any of the fundamental flaws we have (just like Gabby didn't fix it or Nash haven't fixed 'em).

Unless we could get like a Eberle/Yakubov in a trade that makes sense (which seems unlikely), I would rather keep the assets and cap space we have and just bomb away whenever a top offensive capable right D becomes available. If Torts is going to stay in NY, we just must have a offensive punch from the blueline.

Yakupov or Hall would be ideal. I doubt either happen.

Edmonton is going to try like hell to ditch Hemsky this summer. What a waste of talent. Eberle makes a lot of sense, but he makes too much money. Slats won't pick up that contract unless he's dumping one on them in return. Does Gorton have a different attitude towards contract term?

Oilers have built their new brand around the Canadian kids in RNH, Hall and Eberle. Hard for them to justify trading one of them now.

If that's the case then go hard after Yakupov.

Also, on another topic, I want the Rangers to sign Iginla to a 2-3 year deal this off-season. Yes I know he is another RWer, but the guy is a gamer and one of the best leaders in the NHL. He can still score 30 goals and it is a low risk/high reward as there will always be a team out there willing to take Iginla for their SC run if it doesn't work out. End Rant.

MacTavish could have a different view of the team than Tambellini. MacT didn't select those guys. Colorado was interested in DZ during the ROR stuff. They have some good young forwards. Duchesne and Landeskog. Sakic is now in charge there.

I don't think Colorado will move Landeskog, Duchene or ROR. Stastny on the other hand.....

I wouldn't be overly interested due to that contract though.

Eriksson would be ideal. MDZ for Eriksson.

Maybe Dallas amnesties Gogo?

Other than ROR, Duchesne and Landeskog, I don't think they have a forward I'd consider in exchange for Del Zotto.

Richards was supposed to be the answer on the PP. Not even close. The signing of Richards is a big X in the Torts column. Richards was OK last season. He has been miserable this season. $20M in one calendar year. Pro-rated $4M salary. Owed $36M. $24M in a compliance buyout. What do Sather and Gorton say to Schoenfeld about Torts and Richards when they are alone? Jim and John are buddies. Jim is the go between the FO and Torts. The front office must question some of the personnel on the PP. The scheme. Torts complains about the personnel given to him by management. Schoeny must have some good stories. Torts made a comment about Gorton wanting Kreider to play on the top lines and he didn't believe Kreider was ready. He said my assistant GM in referring to Gorton. Torts said the team needs to address the need of a shot or a QB on the PP. Brad Richards? He made those comments to Kay in the same interview he discussed the Nash trade being a "lateral" move. One game Moore is on the PP and then he never plays it again. Then he discussed how much he loves Moore and he will be the key player in the Gaborik trade.

Eriksson would be ideal.

Loui Eriksson is a good hockey player, but given the numbers he has put up lately I think there is a big risk that he is overrated. He has performed extremely well for Dallas, and he always work hard and is a likeable guy, but it says alot that every other Dallas fan is throwing him into trade proposals.

He is just not that talented overall, nor even remotely capable of carrying a line or something like that. He goes to the net hard and definitely got a knack for finding the back of the net.

He actually reminds me a bit of Luc Robitalle.

He would be ideal for the way this team is trying to build though. Very good 2-way player with offensive skills and a high hockey IQ. LWer. He reminds me of a Stepan on the wing. I think he will rebound.

Something is not great in that relationship or atleast professional set-up.

The coach must assume a big responsibility for what players he gets to work with. The minimum seems to be that the coach basically is as involved as the GM plus assistents, but leaves the room when a decision is taken. Or not. When we get a guy, Torts standard response seem to be "I don't know who he is".

His cap hit isn't that bad.

But I've really seen alot of him. I saw him in the SEL and I've followed 6-7 international tournaments that he has played in and natrually some in Dallas. I don't mind him, but I don't know how many times I've seen him in situations where he is a bigger name on a team and that team really needs someone to step up, but Loui is nowhere to be seen.

Then when his team gets out of a funk, or he ends up on a better team, goals all of a sudden starts going in for him.

His last season might have brought down the expectations some, which is essential, because for a while there he was seen a legit star and he just isn't strong enough individually to earn that cost.

I would of course don't mind us getting him, but Id pay alot more for someone like Eberle than Eriksson that's for sure.

I agree with that, I just fear what the cost would be for someone like Eberle.

Although he did put up back-to-back-to-back 70+ point seasons. That's pretty impressive. He was on pace for ~50 points this season.

48 Million for approximately 128 regular season games played ! That pretty well sums up the ineptness of New York Rangers management and ownership...what a NY legacy by Sather .

Can't be bothered to check who said it but, I've liked the idea of maybe adding Streit since there were rumors of him getting shipped out of LI a few months ago (If they can nab him for a reasonable price)

We need a vet Dman with a shot

how do you blame Sather for Richards sucking? Isn't it his responsibility to play hard and earn his money?

he came off 2 respectable seasons in Dallas, and you know there were other suitors? It's okay to be angry, but direct it towards the right person...

This is comforting.

Kreider is a non-factor in HFD and shows no signs being able to contribute when given a ton of chances in the NHL, then Gorton wants Torts to put him on the top lines and give him PP time...

Lateral move? Someone needs to tell Torts that there is a cap in place. We had a tremendously deep lineup last season, but Torts couldn't win because he didn't have the nukes. Now he have the nukes, but he can't win because of our depth (what now is wrong with our depth this season, we have given up a ton of assets to get them and/or we pay them high salaries). We have a roster with players that Torts has asked for. With the cap, you can restructure but not add to this.

People need to stop defending Torts. He and the New York Rangers have become irrelevant. Read twitter, if you follow say the top 20 tweeters there are 2-3 tweets about Bruins winning, and then 100 tweets on the other games. We are the biggest market, but they avoid us on national TV if they can. Too boring. Everyone know that we aren't going anywhere. We do not play good hockey.

Other teams have no respect for us, that's why we had such tough time in the regular season. They know that if they just show up and play a decent hockey game, we will slapper the puck the length of the ice all night and they will pwn us.

Torts = Jody Shelly

Irrelevant

Why is this relevant in the cap thread?

Because you gotta be able to make due with a roster that fits under the Cap. That is a limit on what you can plan. Building an optimal team is not the same thing as buílding an optimal team under the cap. On the later, you must find ways to get what you need while fitting it under a cap.

NJD got Marek Zidlicky last season and he gave them a PP and was essential in them making it to the SCF's. 5'10 180.

BOS is playing Torey Krug. 5'8 180. Giving them an offensive punch.

You cannot have a player like that on a team that plays the way we do. We give away so many pucks that all our D's constantly must be able to defend 1 on 1 and handle themselves physiaclly. Krug isn't defending out there on a shift by shift basis. He is fetching pucks that we dump into their zone.

Ola, I agree with you. In the cap era, you don't always have to go for the home run, sometimes the no name value moves work better than a mega deal.

Matt Moulson, Marc Metthiot, Anton Strahlman, even the Bruins developing Johnny Boychuk..all were minor moves that made nice impacts.

The Gaborik trade was great for that reason. Gave the Rangers three young controllable pieces for good prices.

Those are the type of free agents the Rangers should target 9/10 times. Richards was necessary but with his declining skills, and Stepan and Brassard doing a fine job as the top 2, if they can't get Filpulla for a decent price, they can always find a player like an Antropov to take a 1-2 year cheap deal because of his diminished production. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. Somewhere one of the other 29 teams is going to give up on a young player who hasn't produced and can be signed for cheap. Rangers once traded away Dave Gagner who excelled with the North Stars. Maybe Roman Cervenka, 27 years old and who will be a UFA can be developed in a different system.

That's why a guy like Babchuk intrigues me even though I don't love his game. He had an awful year and expects to play in the KHL, but if the Rangers can get him for a 1-2 year deal for 1.5 million, he's a hard shooting RIGHTY Dman who could help the PP.

The Rangers need to revamp their bottom-6 with size and speed. That much is obvious. Pyatt is too slow and yes, I realize he scored last night. Asham is too slow. Richards is too slow and weak. Where are the guys other teams have to look out for on the forecheck?

This team needs a legit PP QB. If that means moving MDZ for a comparable winger and signing Streit then so be it. Enough is enough. Having no one who can command a PP is getting beyond old.

Streit @ 35? how is he better than what we have already?

Its always the same with Glen Sather. No due diligence.

Brad Richards in Dallas and Tampa was a product of, or an important cog in if you prefer, a team.

The basis of Brad Richards game for both teams was those team's power play. Brad Richards set up shop on the right power play point. Down low on the right side he had an awsome left handed play maker (Vincent Lecavalier/Mike Riberio) that he could play keep away with. To the left of him, he had a right handed PPQB (Dan Boyle/Sergei Zubov(or Robidas)) who he could play keep away with. And a few other ingridiences, but all in all its those two mentioned that where core.

That was undoubtedly the heart of Brad Richards entire game. Litterary.

In NY, we didn't have that environement. Even remotely. Down low on the right side we had ... Marian Gaborik. Awful in that role. Could easily be pressured by the PKers. Ok, did we have a right handed PPQB then like Zubov or Boyle? Ops, we had a decent LH PPQB in MDZ but nobody with a right shot.

A player in the NHL is a product of the team he is on. 2013. That was maybe not the case 1987 or even 1993, but now it is. Its the team that creates offense. Its the team that defends. Not many individual efforts. The way a PP works, the way a forecheck works, the way a team attacks, that is not individual effort but team play.

The teams that have managed to consistently do really well in this league are the teams with a set game plan (that works) with very defined roles so that they can bring in players specific for those roles. Slats fall short there for sure.
