According to my rough math, that equates to about an extra 166 million each year provided it's an equal increase each year absolute dollar wise.

The NHL on Monday moved to close a loophole left in the allegedly airtight collective bargaining agreement by notifying general managers the league would deem re-signing a player following a trade and a subsequent amnesty buyout as circumvention, and thus would not register the contract, The Post has learned.

It is believed the Lightning and Maple Leafs had discussed such a maneuver regarding Vincent Lecavalier, who has seven years and $45 million remaining on his contract, with the buyout thus worth slightly more than $30 million.

The amnesty buyout period begins Wednesday night at 11:00, and lasts through July 4, one day before the opening of this year’s free agent market.

The clubs theoretically would have concocted a swap in which Tampa Bay would have sent an asset — perhaps a draft pick — to rolling-in-dough Toronto along with Lecavalier, who would have re-signed a more modest deal with the Lightning after being bought out by the Leafs.

Thank God we had the lockout. Can't believe that part wasn't written in until now as that could have gotten ugly if a deal like TOR/TB went down.

Smart decision by the NHL. Wonder if the NHLPA will file a grievance, since this amendment wasn't collectively bargained.

It's already covered under Article 26 of the CBA.

26.3 Circumventions.
(a) No Club or Club Actor, directly or indirectly, may: (i) enter into any agreements, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, whether express, implied, oral or written, including without limitation, any SPC, Qualifying Offer, Offer Sheet or other transaction, or (ii) take or fail to take any action whatsoever, if either (i) or (ii) is intended to or has the effect of defeating or Circumventing the provisions of this Agreement or the intention of the parties as reflected by the provisions of this Agreement, including without limitation, provisions with respect to the financial and other reporting obligations of the Clubs and the League, Team Payroll Range, Player Compensation Cost Redistribution System, the Entry Level System and/or Free agency.

The league has the power to deny the contract in this case, just like they did with Kovy.

I don't agree with this for two reasons.

1. Who says there is an agreement between the two teams? It may be obvious that they are, but no one will be there to see this agreement.

2. The entire "circumvention" rule seems to be BS. It's as if the rule is "if you're not sure if what you're about to do is allowed, assume it's not."

There is no clear rule on saying you can't trade a player who then gets bought out to then sign that player. It's not in the CBA. How could Tampa be so sure that Toronto is going to buy out Lecavalier? Everyone will swear that this is what they're doing, but prove it. For all we know, Toronto could think they're getting a steal just for these draft picks.

I'd assume it's discussions off to the side... which means it's shady business

Steal ? lol they are getting a player and draft picks with nothing going the other way;)

If Toronto owners want to play 30 million dollars for a couple negligible pieces... good grief.

With all their money and their lack of success, I can absolutely see why Toronto would buy draft picks if there was a loophole that allowed them to do so.

Makes sense to me. Why not essentially buy draft picks or prospects if you can do so?

The CBA very clearly prohibits a team from buying out a player and then re-signing that player.

Trading the player so that another team can buy out the player, and then re-signing the player, is an obvious circumvention of the rule.

If tampa traded VL + their 1st for a 3rd round pick, do you honestly think anyone would believe that it's a valid hockey deal? Toronto isn't going to do the deal unless they are getting something significant.

The NHL would absolutely block that deal, and if necessary, bring in an arbitrator to determine punishment, just like they did with the Kovy case.

If you're curious, once you take out the qualifying offers, since they will be overridden by the actual contracts, the Rangers have $16,319,535 in space to re-sign the 6 RFAs, including Mashinter. There really shouldn't be any worry about offer sheets.

Believe they only got the 5th because Clowe did not resign. If he would have signed with us we would have lost the 2nd instead of the 5th. We lost the 2013 2nd though. Plus a 3rd rounder

6.5 left for Stepan, Hagelin, and Zuccarello. Dont see how we're doing this wuthout moving a player we dont wanna move.

I think we could do 2 years 3.5 per for Stepan, 2 years 2 million per for Hagelin.

You give Zucc 3 years at 1.5 apiece, and we're just .5 over. That's solved with LTIR of Callahan and Hagelin early in the season, then we cut Pyatt loose when they come back.

6.5 left for Stepan, Hagelin, and Zuccarello. Dont see how we're doing this wuthout moving a player we dont wanna move.

Simply. Starting at $6.55m number from Cap Geek.

Stepan -4
Hagelin -2
Zuccarello -1.5
Falk -0.9
Johnson +0.6
Powe +0.925
Asham +0.925

=

$0.6m in cap space.

Cap geek loves to fool people. On their site, the Rangers already have 12 forwards and 7 D under contract. Are we going to add 3 more forwards and another D without sending people down? Nope.

Powe and Ashem get waived at end of camp. Saves $1.85 million I believe.

- 6 years at an AAV of $4 million for Stepan.
- 2 years at an AAV of $1.75-2 million for Hagelin.
- 1 year for MZA at $1.25-1.5 million.
- Offer Falk a 1 year 1 way deal worth $650-700k (Like Boyle took less then his qualifying offer to get a one way deal).

It's going to be really interesting after this coming season.

Absolutely. How interesting it gets depends on how much the cap goes up (if at all). This year was never going be tricky. Couple minor tweaks and we would be right.

In 12 months time Hank, Girardi, Stralman, Callahan are all UFAs. Kreider is due for a pay day.
