Dolan eats $24 million in real dollars if they choose to buyout Richards this off-season. $18 million if they wait til June 2014. I think they wait until 2014 and allow Richards another year. Even if he does rebound next year I don't see any way that they don't use that extra compliance buyout on him.

I would rather not re-sign Clowe. Not because of his injuries with us, but simply as a greater product of age, playing style, offense, ect.

I would hold onto Brad for one more year. There aren't any real suitable replacements. Outside of Horton and Jagr, there aren't many free agents either. Stand pat for a year, bring Zucc back, see if Thomas, Kreider or Fasth wins a wing spot next year. If Malkin decides he wants to test the market, we buy out Richards and open 7 million in space at the right time to go fishing for him.

I would rather the team struggle a bit next year grooming Lindberg or Miller than see Richards be a "stop-gap" for a season. I also believe there will be other players available this summer who are not UFA's. There will be teams in cap trouble and there will be buyouts.

I just don't see the reason not to give him one more year.

The odds of him suffering a long injury are small. Having a Brad Richards, even a half-Richards like we had this season can make the difference between winning and losing.

We will have to buy him out after next year. That seems a certainty. But I don't think we'll have a problem re-signing everyone with him on the cap, and I don't see a UFA option out there that I would rather have for a year than Richards at that number. Like his play or not, there is still a decent chance he can be a 60 point center over the duration of a full season. Lindberg wouldn't be.

1) Injury
2) He's like a lame-duck coach. He knows he will get bought out. The team knows he will be bought out. It doesn't create a comfortable situation.

I would rather go out and attempt to sign someone like Horton for 3 years or something like that. Weiss is another option. Filpulla would fit in well here as well as a very good 2-way player. Maybe he doesn't get as much because of the cap coming down and a disappointing season this year?

Then there is always the option to make a trade for a center. Teams will be more apt to trade this off-season with the cap coming down and cap space is a HUGE asset, especially for a team willing to spend money.

I would rather the Rangers look to pounce while teams have to unload good players due to their contracts than hold onto lame duck Richards.

Whoops! Yes you did. My bad, haha.

No worries. I foresee a few players like Horton being available either via trade or who are bought out so teams can get under the cap.

Ryan Malone for cheap or who is bought out?

David Booth for cheap or bought out?

Ballard for cheap or bought out?

Will Hossa be bought out due to the length of his contract?

Franzen same thing as Hossa?

Ruutu bought out by Carolina to create cap room?

Just some thoughts

Weiss is going to end up with the Leafs.

There really aren't UFA's we should go for. If the team wants to go for Malkin, they need contract opening at that time. That really only leaves a 1 year deal for Jagr on the table, and to be honest... Richards will probably outscore Jagr next year over a full season, from a center ice position.

Hossa bought out? That is a dream withing a dream, I think. And imagine the attention he would get, even at his age.

I think there will be quite a few players taking those 1 year deals as I don't see a lot of teams with a ton of money available for UFA's this upcoming season. Will Roy take a 1 year deal to set his value for next season? Will Clowe after his injuries scare off some teams?

I think there will be some buy-outs as well that are not being talked about as of yet. There may be some players left over at the end who will sign for less than their value.

Except you're not factoring in the $9MM in salary that you have to pay him next year if you wait. You actually SAVE real dollars by buying him out this summer.

Brad Richards is now the 3rd/4th line center on this team. That guy can't take up 11% of your cap. Even if he returns to form (and you can't keep him around on a hope), he won't put up 60 points playing in that role. As to injuries, the odds are not THAT small - look at how many guys we have out right now (and every year) and don't forget that Brad's got a concussion history.

Not using the compliance buyout on him this summer would be an enormous mistake IMO.

Hossa bought out? That is a dream withing a dream, I think. And imagine the attention he would get, even at his age.

He would garner attention for sure, but adding him to the market would mean other players become available. With the dropping salary cap a lot of teams will not have the room to sign a player like that this off-season without making other moves first.

Like I said, it's all speculation on the players who would be available, obviously. But I would rather have the cap space this off-season then Richards at this point.

There will be plenty of big name buyouts. Hossa, Lecavalier, Malone and Richards are the tip of the iceberg. I've heard 15-20, perhaps more. With the $ that Stepan and McDonagh will be getting, a Richards buyout is almost a given. Very tough decision though. Teams simply can't afford to carry contracts written under the old salary cap rules with the new penalties.

Exactly this. Vinny is a perfect example.

I know Parise and Suter just signed but I wonder if there is any thought about them.

Same goes for Lucic who underachieved this year and is paid 6 million for the foreseeable future.

Bobbop, who else have you heard?

I will avoid the discussion altogether about whether or not to buy out Richards (as there is basically an entire thread devoted to that). I`m not certain that McDonagh is going to get the $$$ that a lot of people think he is going to get (many ASSUME it will be around 4 million a year). I think McD`s contract is going to be like MDZ (a 2.55m bridge : http://www.capgeek.com/comparables/?player_id=1158&year_id=2012), or PK Subban (a 2.875m bridge : http://www.capgeek.com/comparables/?player_id=1074&year_id=2012). Unless Sather convinces McD to sign a long term deal like Staal, I can`t see Sather doling out 4 million bucks a year to McDonagh.

McDonagh is arbitration eligible. If Sather offers him a bridge deal, it's almost certainly heading towards an arbitration settlement. Give the guy his money. Even if his offense remains stagnant, he's one of the best two-way defenders in the NHL already. He's worth an extended contract.

$4.5M per might be on the low end at this point.

I agree that McDonagh should get paid. But I`m not certain Sather feels that way. I guess that`s the point I was trying to make with the comparables. Karl Alzner is pretty much in the same boat too, isn`t he??

I understand what you meant, it's just that Subban and Del Zotto really aren't comparables because of the arbitration situation. They either sign the deal and play, or sit around and hope an offer sheet comes their way to force the team's hand. McDonagh can take it to arbitration, get a one year deal and then we're stuck in the same boat next year. Alzner signed his ELC before he was 20, so I believe that excluded him from arbitration on his second contract. He should be arbitration eligible this summer though.

Sather has shown a willingness to give bigger deals when they are warranted. Staal got an extended deal. Girardi got an extended deal as well. I believe McDonagh will get a 4-5 year deal.

Glen doesn't have much of a choice with McDonagh. Arbitration eligible. 3 years away from group III. DZ was not arbitration eligible. Sather had the hammer with Del Zotto. McD has the hammer.

There is nothing wrong with keeping Lindberg, Miller, and Fasth in the AHL next year until a spot opens up or they play so well they force a call up.

Minny is not buying out Suter the year he wins a norris trophy, nor are they cutting ties with two free agents in their prime, when they owe them both 100 million dollars.

Can you imagine?

Vinny L makes sense, though. I can see him Montreal bound.

I have no clue how he would fit into our line-up 5 on 5, but someone like Danny Briere would really help our PP.

This.

The last thing you want to have happen is to have Jay Feaster (or worse yet Grath Snow) throw your salary structure out of whack with an offer sheet.

Bobbop, who else have you heard?

A lot of noise about a glut of older players on the market this summer. A free agent market that looks more like >2005 with many 30+ players cut loose because of new cap rules. It will really hurt guys (i.e. Clowe) from getting a big contract. Forget about big money, as teams reset under the new rules, many older players will have to scramble to find a place to play next year. One thing I have been told is that the cap could stay flat or drop again in 2014. Someone I really trust told me that if you are even thinking about buying a player out, then that player will definitely be bought out.
