I really think they need to think long and hard before giving Girardi and Callahan lucrative, long-term deals. Callahan will be 29, Girardi 30. Players like them don't tend to last too long into their 30s.

Especially Girardi. It'd be risky to give him any more than a 3 or 4 year deal.

Richards was a pretty good fit last season.

I have heard this song play out before. In the end, we don't get over that one hump because we don't have any offensively talented forwards..which were the reasons why we got Gaborik, Richards, and Nash in the first place!

You can't have a coach who is blase with regards to the PP and the offense. Anyone remember that thread about the Rangers' PP? Did we come to a conclusion as to who in fact is running it?

The constant shuffling of players is irritating. I can understand if the team suffers an injury or you're double-shifting certain players, but we don't even have one line-up where they are immune from it. What he's doing is pretty much throwing everything at a wall and see what sticks, with the problem being that we had a pretty good line with Nash-Stepan-Hagelin and he still felt he needed to change things up.

Seriously..do you have to wait until the off-season to have players work on their shots? Wide and high has become synonymous with this team. You can't have shooting practices now?

I know this is a thread about cap management and - in all likelihood - one of Gaborik or Richards will have to be shown the door. The thing is I want Torts to have to go through it, first.

Callahan and Girardi will get 4yr deals most likely.. for similar money.. girardi is questionable, bc although hes valuable to use and irreplaceable and i could see him trying FA and gett paid! like a 6-7yrs 35m..

richards gets another year forsure.. before the "decision" in 14' to see what to do with him.. hopefully buyout..

i think asham done after this year.. haley has a oneway deal next year, so makes sense to have him up..

Powe and Pyatt may be gone if this team doesn't make the playoffs or makes a run..

torts is on the hot seat next year to win the cup, if not hes gone..

Gab might be traded at the draft or we might wait to next years deadline? hes the biggest question mark of the all!

The argument there is weird to me. Your system is Torts system. If he isn't there, it will be the system of somebody else.
Your D, when healthy, can play pretty much any system, at least those among them who matter. Another identity player like Callahan can also be a succesful player on any team in the league. Ie. as a Pens fan I am in no doubt that he could be very good on any of our top3 lines, and we play very different from the Rangers.

The very idea would be that if your coach and his system is not fit to bring out the best of your key players, then it is extremely difficult to get proper value for the key players as they will be under performing and their contracts will look very risky.

Bottom line is that at this point you would be gambling big time if you were to deal or buy out Gaborik/Richards, because there are very few impact UFA's top pick up in their place. Before getting there, one should try out the alternative, which is to can Torts and let a replacement take a crack at it.

As a Penguin fan, I sure hope Torts stay on, but that is something else entirely.

Not that many "stars" make it to free agency anymore. Richards was the guy in 2011. Parise and Suter were the guys in 2012. They wanted no part of the Rangers. The Anaheim twins remained in California. The rest of the free agent list for this summer is full of older players. Besides Malkin in 2014,a bunch of old guys. No stars available. The 2nd best group III in 2014 is the Rangers own player.

$5.5MM for Stepan? And that's low!? Clowe, McDonagh, and Hagelin are about right, IMO. Stepan should get around $2.75MM.
