Murray was good last night, but I noticed him swimming around a bit that hopefully they can fix. NHL teams will take advantage of bad positioning.
Not sure what you think positioning is in goaltending but Murray was very well positioned. That's why most of those saves were the puck hitting him in the crest.
There were scramble plays where he was moving about to stay in position, but that would be mobility, and in that case it was good as he managed to stay with the puck.

If he was swimming he would have been on his back doing the snowman wondering where the puck was hoping it was under him.

Aka the jack Campbell lol

Swimming is definitely not how I'd describe Murray lol, legit the opposite of how he plays

There were only a couple of times I noticed he was it out of position, but overall it was was great practice for him.

Disagree with you there. There was a high slot giveaway last night which led to a 2 on 0 chance by the Habs. Murray made the save but what was really impressive is he barely moved or reacted. I think he scrambled when he had to and didn't get burned, but the inert positional play and calmness was a really encouraging sign. He seemed dialed in and in control.

He looks like he's absolutely ready to fight his way to a comeback this season. Which is great news for us

NHL goalie tandem rankings for 2022-23

Oct 4, 2022

i

23. Toronto Maple Leafs
Matt Murray, Ilya Samsonov

Stop us if you've heard this before, but there are a variety of opinions about the relative quality of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Some of the goalie insiders we spoke with believe the Murray and Samsonov duo is going to be among the worst in the league. Real Clear Analytics has them ranked 27th heading into this season, based on last season's performances.

Others look at what Murray did with the Senators, look at the Toronto defense and believe we could see a comeback season for the former Stanley Cup winner: One model shows his performance translating to a .920 save percentage with the Leafs. Samsonov, however, is the trickier call. One insider called him "a project" despite three seasons with the Capitals. The Leafs are going to boom-or-bust with this goaltending.

Murray has looked very steady in net. Never really notice how big he actually is.

We'll have to see when the games get going for real. But I'm happy with the first impressions for both these guys.

So I don't mind if there are doubts and questions about them going into the season. It'll be up to them to prove what they can do. But they both have the potential to step up. Just have to see how that goes. But I've liked their pre-season showings. So far, so good.

I tell it since leafs signed murray...

an horrible D in front a good goalie... he will look most of the time weak to average goalie and rarely like a good goalie and praticly never like an elite G

Put the same goalie in front an excellent defensive team, he will look most of the time like a good to an excellent goalie...sone time like an okay goalie and rarely like an awful one...

Put jack Campbell last 2 season with Ottawa d, not sure he would get much better number than Murray and maybe unstead of playing 1 and half great season and get a big contract, he would still play as a backup right now...

The D was excellent last season, and looks to be better this season.

It was near NHL worst goaltending (except for the month of November) that sunk the team.

I've upgraded from 'cautiously optimistic' to 'optimistic'.

But by all means, continue on with this fallacy that has been disproven by any stats of your choosing. It was near NHL worst goaltending (except for the month of November) that sunk the team.

I don’t think his point was what you read it as. I think he is saying with a better D, we should expect Murray to look better here than he did in Ottawa

590 had a goalie expert on and he was accessing our tandem. It was interesting the detail he gave, particularly with Murray. Basically, Pitt realized that Murray’s style was becoming outdated, this wide stance, low profile, was being exposed because the game was changing. Let’s not forget he stunk prior to leaving. This evolution in his game was also occurring in Ottawa, he was arguing he was just figuring it out but injuries never allowed him to get there, expects he will now. It was a positive assessment, but it actually scared the shit out of me as well. He said there will never be a “return to form” with Murray because he isn’t the same goalie style wise, for me in other words his pedigree is largely irrelevant and he’s pretty much never had sustained success since he’s changed his game. I hardly took these insights as encouraging, we’re dealing with a project here, who’s past glory is irrelevant. It was a weird analysis because it could be taken both ways.

As for Samsanov, he said he has clear flaws in his style, works too hard and it allows for bad rebound positioning, but he felt he could still have “some success”.

Just throwing it out there. I’ll say this, I haven’t really since Murray in particular tested at all in preseason, not gleaming much so far, except he looks calm, like you’d expect.

I was thinking the poster was talking about the Leafs D being poor, but if that's the case, definitely.

It got lost in the translation. LOL

I would be curious to listen to the expert, but interesting, thanks for the breakdown.

I will say, I don't think Murray has been tested too much because he is positionally playing well (not a goalie expert, could be wrong), but he doesn't seem to overreact, so not seeing too many second saves where he needs to dive across.

I've been really impressed with his positioning and feel confident he can make the first save (hopefully our D clears out the second).

Samsonov looks like an athletic battler, hopefully, we can teach him some better positioning and calmness, but I am optimistic about the duo and can see them working out.

To me all these goalies talk will only matters in playoffs.
Afterall, as some of you had stated Campbell and others were pretty bad since Nov and yet the Leafs still managed to have Franchise Records in Points and top 5 in regular season. That didn’t account to anything in the playoffs. The year before Leafs ran away with the division and played the worst regular season team that made the playoffs in addition to having a great regular season record against that team and Leafs didn’t advance.
Hopefully the boys can do it this year and actually make a deep run instead of just winning a round bc the goal is the win the Cup and not a round in the playoffs. Winning a round in the playoffs is not the be all and end all, despite it seems like that way with the Medias and Leafsnation.

Murray plays that minimal movement type of goaltending that I associate with championship teams. Kinetic/frantic goaltending can be fun to watch but it feeds the wrong energy to the team in front of it. Samsonov still seems uncooked like there's a future dominant goalie hidden underneath the surface that may not emerge until after his 30th birthday.

I know they are going 1A and 1B but unless they flip a coin, even if they don't admit, it someone is seen as the #1.
Would that be the Goalie that starts Opening Night on the road or Opening Night at home the following day?

I like Murray and think he will put up top 5 numbers here IF he stays healthy, but the 21/22 save % army that has formed here is much worse than the 2019 we need hitZZZ at all costs army.

This team was and is fully capable of sweeping Tampa and winning the cup WITH Campbell. I mean, Vasi and Campbell were a literal wash in the series.

This teams achilles is flea market shopping on the no.4 D and who we use as captains for depth roles. Pickings are slim anyways since we don't even start 4th lines until this season (hopefully).

They houdini acted everyone again with Holl making you think he's a no.6 now. He's a no.6 on paper but his usage broke down to more or less no.4 in impact. I''ll let you replay game 6 overtime, and the sloppiest pick attempt ever seen in game 7 that wiped out Tavares' goal (doesn't matter if it wasn't a relative penalty, it was still 0/10 for execution) to remind yourself what flea market shopping your no.4 can lead to. Engvall is a clear houdini act if you think he's capable of carrying a bottom 6 I'm no longer to go in depth with him.

It's not a cap problem either. We have no cap problems holding us back from filling these holes (unless you purposefully make it an issue holding onto scrubs *cough cough*). Don't even have to fix all, even one will do.

I'm saying this because I like the new tandem and installing safe guards for them in the event other issues send them spiraling downwards at times. The same save % squad lifting them up right now will be the first to pin ALL 100% fraction of the blame on them if the GA is a bit too high for everyone's liking because they fail to, or do not want to see or admit to other holes in the team.

I'm still expecting our goaltending to be in the same range as it was last year (~22nd).

Bad, but not awful.

Anything more will be a pleasant surprise.
