He was ok. Had some shaky rebounds but the D bailed him out. Kind of advertised - big body, not hugely athletic. But that game he didn't need to be athletic he just had to be square.

If the Leafs D plays like they did last year, being big and calm in net like he was that game will be enough to get him a .910 and a bunch of wins.

He looked really strong on poor angle shots, which is where Campbell was inconsistent. That will help the D a lot because you can give up those shots in favour or prioritizing danger areas if your goalie can be trusted to stop them.

I was kind of surprised how bulked up his equipment setup looked.

Murray loves to play good game bad game, hell lose the opener for your team then get injured, then get covid, then refuse to play afternoon games.

He will give the rest of your team the sads

Looked like he had rust from not playing for not playing in 7 months, but he flashed a glove hand a couple of times, which I had heard was a weakness of his....but he bobbled a couple too.

Overall a decent game to shake off the rust and build on his confidence going forward.

Just giving information, not taking sides. Do with the information what you please:

When we lost 6-3 to the Rangers, Rielly also made comments about the D needing to clean up around the net better. He clarified that his comments have nothing to do with Keefes comments about being soft that game, as he was unaware Keefe even said that.

Then later in the season Keefe is not pleased with play around the net.

So, up to you if you think it was a one game issue, or if it was a lingering issue that was never solved due to the time lapse between comments and events, to the point a lot of people are left wondering to this day what exactly Boosh was doing in the lineup beside Rielly in the playoffs.

I forgot to mention it's also up to you if you think Rielly and Keefe were just straight up dead wrong about how they assessed things.
player and coach post game comments... how often have you ever heard a coach or player say, we played good, but our goalie was horse droppings; its just not done, even when its true.
I still remember that disgusting game vs Florida where every shot from anyplace was a potential goal.
the defense cant play properly when they dont trust the goalie to make a routine stop (part of playing defense is forcing the forward to make a low risk shot, and when those go in, you cannot blame the defense), and then, cant criticize the goalie(s) because their confidence/ego is softer than margarine

If the Saturday night version of Samsonov is the version we get on a regular basis, that's going to be a good addition for the Leafs.

Very focused in all of his movements. Was dialed in even though he was lightly tested, had that upright stance he was reportedly working on (looked somewhat similar to Campbell actually) and great athleticism, lateral movement.
what i specifically looked for in the game vs Campbell was his tracking of the puck. and especially in the crease after a rebound, as that si one thing that really had me worried about Campbell as he seemed on occasion to lose track of the puck behind his net, and scramble like crazy when a rebound dropped in the crease.
only 2 periods, but, Samsonov looked okay in that regard

for those interested, here is new Leafs goalie coach discussing incorporating more tools to their game. Personally I don't like when goalies are too cookie ccutterish and rely solely on certain techniques and drop into default positions. I prefer hybrid style. You can apply different techniques to different situations and it can also keep shooters guessing as well.

Sanford is an Ian Clarke guy. I think this was a good hire for you guys.

Edit- your username has goalie in it and you follow ingoalmag. You likely already knew that!

Speaking of In Goal, they were talking about Ilya Samsonov's build, upside, athleticism, etc. when we got him and they were talking about his bad habits and getting in the low crouch. Gets into trouble when you see his jersey logo tuck in behind his pads. Saw a bit of that in the PK sequence on the Batherson goal. Generally Samsonov was very upright and presented like a bigger Campbell in his stance in the first preseason game. Thought it was an interesting detail they brought up and showed up almost right away.

OCT .893sv%, 82pt pace
NOV .953sv%, 141pt pace
DEC .893sv%, 105pt pace
JAN .890sv%, 127pt pace
FEB .889sv%, 103pt pace
MAR .876sv%, 100pt pace
APR .894sv%, 131pt pace

Even worse than I remember - only one month all season where the Leafs goaltending was above .894sv%. Just brutal.

Also only 1 month where the Leafs were under 100pt pace - the shortened October where their offense just couldn't score for some reason.

Samsonov looked good last night. The last goal was a softie, but the game was already out of reach. He came through when the game was on the line.

I wonder how good we would be with .905 goaltending.

Prob would have won the series if we got .905 goaltending.

What are we supposed to see there? Tampa getting some rush chances and leafs getting some chances in the crease?
No at the 6:02 mark is when fourth line and sudden Leaf fan favourite picked up a puck and took it to the net and scored. Easily should be been on his butt but we don’t defend physically.

I hated the way Brodie tried to stick check the puck out of Nick Paul's feet at the time. Even if he had somehow poked it loose there was no escapability with the puck and Palat was bearing down too. But then you watch the whole sequence and things could have been very different had Nylander been rewarded fighting through that check.

True, the Bolts totally got away with yanking the stick out of Muzzin's hand to create the rush chance, this after hilariously calling off a Leafs goal for lesser interference.

Oh, you didn't mean when Tampa's defense allowed a breakaway to Nylander? You instead ignored that and then subsequently tried to draw broad conclusions about our defense based on one play from one clip that features half of our defense not even in the play because he was tripped up and then had his stick yanked out of hand?

Nylander just missed short side, I forgot about that moment to be honest. I know I’m hurt from all those losses, and you have to look at the big picture, but man even with sub average goaltending we were minutes away from winning game 6 and inches away from winning game 7.

That being said, their effort in game 4 was pathetic. That was the game they needed to win and they came out flat, 3 goals on the first 6 shots. Campbell did not bail them out.

Hope these two have a year and we can see some long term play off hockey!

If our D steps up and plays the body the play dies.

For a series that called everything, they started to call nothing for the second half of the series.

Tampa has the attitude you can’t call everything, and since Toronto plays such a clean game, they actually DO get called for everything.
