I’m not too worried about Samsonov. Every goalie goes through ups and downs.

I’d give the next two games to Murray and throw Samsonov back in on Sunday against Philly.

I think you have to stay committed to a plantoon in principle and tweak the ratio of games. It’s about maintaining and not putting too much pressure on one vs the other. Bad Samsonov has been evident for a few games with the happy feet and bad crouch and puck tracking for a few games but we still have the luxury of still putting up points. Maybe you mix in a peek of Woll and Kallgren again to get through a rough week.
I think Samsanov has shown who he is so I‘m thinking it‘s imperative to have Murray healthy and rested for the playoffs. But, what about trying to catch Boston or staying ahead of Tampa?

Leafs were a little looser vs St. Louis but still very strong with the sticks on stick checking, zone work and creating odd man battles. I thought their OT was pretty well coordinated too with the dogged and strategic puck management. But it came down to a shootout and out panicky goalie was worse than their panicky goalie.
Its still not to the level I was expecting and expected of them compared to previously for sure. Sammy was fine in OT but agree was mentally gone in the shootout...which is a mode I still hate so 🤷‍♂️

I didn't like the 1st goal he allowed, although I wonder how much of that was the fact it was Marner who got beat since it was a shorthanded goal?

It was also frustrating that he allowed the Blues 2nd, 3rd, and 4th shooters to score on him in the shootout, because he made the first save and needed just one more save to win it after Matthews goal.

The short handed goal was all on the goalie. Marner forced him to a weak backhand that should have been an easy stop.

That was just beyond sad goal yea. That was all on the goalie for sure.

so 15 games is not who he is but 4 games it is who he is
What if his recent games matches the last 5 months of last season where he kept posting < .900 sv% by month?

Jack Campbell's unreal November 2021 play and subsequent regression to the mean in the winter showed us how bumpy things can get when things level out towards league average numbers, so the Leafs will need to gently manage a potential Samsonov crash landing before it happens. Help him reset, and not tax Matt Murray too much physically to the point where you see him breaking down.

In the remaining 44, you'd be looking at a 22 games each if you're looking at a 50/50 split. Not sure what the ratio they want to roll with, but maybe they could try to squeeze another 5 games out of the 3G and have both Murray and Samsonov give you about 20 games each, putting them both in the mid to high 30s for the year. That's not too bad, compared to Campbell's 49 last year.

I have more faith in Samsonov than Campbell for sure.

Murray I’d say the same but knock on wood, I have less faith he’s gonna stay healthy.

The odd part is how fragile their games seem to be - between Campbell and Samsonov it's like their 'off' versions of themselves are so bad they are unplayable. And they seem to wade in and out of 'on' and 'off' modes completely randomly.

Samsonov just posted 2 back to back shutouts, and looked absolutely stellar through his first 10 games, then his next 4 games he gives up 17 goals, posts a .850 SVP, and very suddenly looks like has absolutely no business in the NHL. His fundamentals completely changed. I can't figure it out.

And I also can't tell how much of either their earlier season success, or their abysmal showings of late, have to do with how good or bad we look defensively. All I know is that there's a serious correlation - we have looked awful defensively the last few games, and pucks are suddenly going in.
INJURY

Are people really upset that our 1.8 million dollar goalie isnt playing like an 8 million dollar goalie all season? He's going to have his ups and downs, wishing he gets injured so we can try a prospect (who is only a year younger than him btw) is just insane.

i like sammy a lot but this dude spreads his legs like he's sharing coed washrooms in uni right after ww2.

Those I am worried about.

Overall I wonder if Keefe's goalie 'rotation schedule' is off (i.e. plays the wrong goalie on given nights instead of the other).

not really... and it was a forehand shot, not a backhand

Samsonov slid out and expected the shot, but Marner did nothing to force Saad to shoot. and let Saad keep skating wider, and Samsonov had to adjust, and as soon as he lifted his leg to push off Saad slid it through him, great play by Saad.

a goalie cant just move at will, they need to push, and that means the skate needs to be on the ice and that involves lifting your leg some.
I dont like the goal, but, it wasnt all on Samsonov either.

Goalie makes that save 99/100

The Leafs will miss the playoffs still with these two loser goalies. The very worst duo in the league, laughing stock!

They both suck and have sucked for a while. Goaltending is not fixed. Time to try again.

At what point last year did Campbell game slip and should we be worried that could happen again with Samsonov/Murray?

Literally around the same time. It’s like a carbon copy of Campbell’s season only twice the goalies, so double the fall.
