It's fair if you come to the conclusion that he's not your guy and don't like him. The Leafs seem to be leaning a bit that way. But he played extremely well in November and was good in December.
It's truly what have you done for me lately with our fanbase. And maybe you can't blame them. But it's wild. Literally day to day swings.
Last year with Campbell it went from "Dubas was stupid not signing this guy at 5x$3M in the summer" to "Dubas better not re-sign this guy, he was stupid to not get an upgrade" literally within about a 4-game swing.
This year it's all over the place too. I can remember in December right around the holidays. Samsonov came off of a rough start vs. his former team, let in a few late squeakers against the Flyers in the next gen day game and then wasn't great vs. the Blues in the OT win. Sandwiched between that, Murray won a huge game against the Lightning.
At that point it was clearly Murray, he was the guy, he was tremendous and his experience in big games will help in the playoffs. I can remember it was said Samsonov was too busy/swimmy in his crease and yada yada. Since then, Samsonov his picked up his play while Murray had bad outings vs. the Kraken and Panthers and then tweaked something. We now see trade proposals to send him to the sun and attaching picks to the rocket.
Samsonov could be horrible vs. the Caps and Bruins and then Murray could come out of the break healthy, play well and win a few games and he would be the guy again. Obviously Samsonov is playing better right now and is healthy, so that says a lot going forward.
But I also still think you cannot discount Murray's experience. Let's face it, this board loves playoff experience. It was a huge factor when Muzzin came over. And every year we see trade proposals here where the player would be great cause he has experience. But because Murray is Murray, it's just brushed off.
I'm not saying Murray should be the guy, but if at playoff time if he's healthy (yes a big if) and the play between the two goalies are equal or even if Murray is slightly below Samsonov, I'd still be inclined to lean to Murray. We talk about how we need big game performers, players who don't let the pressure get to them, can recover and let things wash off their backs easily, especially in this market. Sounds like Murray to me.
If Samsonov is the guy at playoff time due to play and/or health, of course he's the guy. I just find it funny how quickly someone is going to be raised to the rafters to then being driven to the airport.
