I have a HS buddy coming in (he is working the NCAA tourney) and we are gonna get together for dinner Wednesday night. When up in Cleveland I took him into The Flats for dining on the river but don't think there is anything quite like that in Columbus. Was thinking about showing him Short North. We are not looking for fancy...just nice and not your "same old same old". I saw an Irish Pub listed down in short North called Macs Proper Pub. Any thoughts on it? Better suggestions?

Short North is tricky. There are some shitty places that cater to toolbags. Been years since I ate at Mac’s but it was always good. Press Grill is good.
Brewery District has really just one brewery. The neighborhood name comes from early Cbus brewing and not the contemporary craft beer scene.
Some good places to eat in the Italian Village area and downtown on 4th Street.

Suggestions in Italian Village? I need to Google it to see where it is. I am kinda new to Central Ohio.
It's the neighborhood to the east of High at the same north-south level as the Short North, with tons of places along N 4th St. Lots of breweries, plus a food hall in Budd's Dairy Hall. The western side of High equivalent is Victorian Village.
I am always hyping up Lemongrass in the Short North. It's right at Buttles, it's never busy, and it's a real gem. Locally owned, been there for like 25 years so it pre-dates the Short North gentrification, and they have strong pours and a great happy hour. Asian fusion owned by a Thai family. I worked there briefly and I still eat there.

It used to be good, but I haven’t been in many many years.
I used to always take out of towners to Schmidt’s. I like the Short North (or did when I lived in the neighborhood) but I think German Village is more unique.
The Short North is full of great spots, all depends on your vibe and there is a vibe for everyone. It's a great place to entertain clients at a high end steakhouse, take your lady out to a rooftop lounge, rendezvous with your side piece at a late night club, meet your vegan daughter for lunch, or hang out with your buddy for a pint. I've been going to Mac's for over 25 years (since college). This is the place I had my first scotch on the rocks. Last time I was there was just before Covid, it was great. Food was solid Scottish fare. Cottage pie is great. They have a solid beer and whiskey/scotch list. You'll have a good time there, but don't be afraid to check out a lot of the other spots around there too. FYI- parking sucks. Plan to valet or take an Uber.
Avoid the Brewery District. It was awesome prior to the building of the Arena District, but there isn't much left.

I really like Arch City Tavern in the Short North - good food and drinks, not crazy expensive, and not full of college-aged kids. Forno is good for wood-fired pizzas, and Bakersfield has good tacos. Just walk up and down High between Goodale and 5th and you'll find some good spots.

I live the other side of downtown and if want to head that way, Pecan Penny's has great BBQ. If you like tapas, check out Sidebar. Rishi Sushi is good for, well, sushi but I love the ramen. And if you want a good dive bar feel, go to Tip Top Lounge and get a pot roast sandwich.

Thanks for the recs. We ended up at Macs in Short North. Short North was ideal as he was getting off work at Nationwide so I could pick him up in front of the Ice Haus and just a few minute drive up High Street. Not busy on a Wednesday at 6PM which was good. It's a nice space and the service was friendly and attentive. The food was fine. We did end up at Jeni's afterwards since they had Ted Lasso biscuits ice cream (I actually didn't care for it and went for the salted peanut butter). Will look for something else next time I am down there.
As a side note, I have been to Short North several times to go out of my way and pick up bagels. As a bagel snob from New York, the bagels at Lox (technically Montreal style bagels) are pretty good.
