So, to recap:

Sports Illustrated gets sold by Time, Inc. to some outfit called Authentic Brands Group (ABG), but they're not at all interested in SI as a magazine, they just want the name to use in merchandising and marketing things.

So they farm out the actual running of the magazine to another outfit called Maven (at the time) which eventually rebranded as The Arena Group. Apparently Maven/Arena is run by the douchiest dudebros this side of B**st**l and they don't know jack shit about how to run it, so they proceed to run it into the ground, punctuated by the public finding out they had published multiple articles that were later (and very easily) found out to be AI-generated. Not only that, the names and photos of these "authors" were also revealed to be AI-generated. Arena tries to blame the idiocy on a third party THEY hired to create content and subsequently erase all evidence on their website.

Which brings us to today, where, after apparently missing a licensing payment, ABG yanked control of SI away from Arena and all SI writers have been laid off.

Hard to think they'll come back from this. Sad end to a publication that used to define sports news. Frankly I'd lost interest in them years and years ago, but there was a time when Sports Illustrated was a fantastic magazine.

I haven't been paying that close attention, but it sure seems like SI has spiraled out pretty quickly.

Guess that's how it works though. What's the Hemingway quote on the two ways you go bankrupt? "Gradually then all at once."

All things run a course. Better to see it die than be farmed how it has been for 4-5 years now.

Granger wrote up Colorado's segment in this "trade market needs for every team" article I just scrolled through.

He said veteran backup, by the way.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with any three of those. Mrazek would send this fanbase into a spiral with the way he plays. He's the Nail Yakupov of goalies. Reimer doesn't have the mobility, reaction speed, agility, etc. to be a fit behind how the Avs play defense. He's barely better than Spencer Martin who was playing on a worse team. Jake Allen is just a better Reimer. I don't think the fit is there as I worry about how he'll look in a system that requires quick movement. Big time worried about that contract plus the aging curve. The problem the Avs put themselves in is can you get a goalie in here and acclimated to the system in time for the trade to matter? Honestly the best goalie for the Avs out there, realistically, might be MAF.

Was that the reporter that reported that Gauthier called Hayes (or was it the other way around?) And was told not to play for Philly? Then Trots called him out?

@Balthazar looks like Jesse Granger is now doing Avs stuff for The Athletic, but he doesn't seem to be following the team daily.

He also seems to know nothing about the Avs. The Athletic has a piece about which player or pick each team will trade this deadline.

His main piece for the Avs 2C solution? Oskar Olausson, saying "it would hurt" to lose him...

I saw that too. If he’s tagged as the guy to do double duty then I’m probably out as well.

It appears The Athletic does not cover:

Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Seattle, Tampa Bay or Washington.

They have one writer (poor Eric Stephens) to cover LA, Anaheim and San Jose.

They have two writers (Baugh and Staple) to cover NYI, NYR and NJD.

So that's 12 out of 25 US based NHL teams that do not have dedicated coverage, 6 don't have any at all.

Thankfully I enjoy other sports and my subscriptions are always gifts, but man their hockey coverage has really tanked.

Yikes. I realize they’re not big markets but no coverage for 3 of the last 4 Cup winners where one is still a contender and last years finalist that’s a contender is bad
