There are a few documents that can be used instead... but practically, passport is the easiest. IIRC all air travel now requires the actual passport book to get into the US. Driving or boat is a bit more lenient and EDL, passport cards, and global entry work.

Yeah, flying to Mexico I have to take my real passport, but driving across the border I can use the passport ID card instead. I wonder if that difference is because I'm not flying into a border town but rather down on the southern end of the Cabo.
