News Article: Colorado Avalanche Media Coverage Part VI

So the guy who knows nothing about hockey learns about it in the wee diddy market nobody cares about and goes somewhere with an audience once he (seems to) know what he's talking about. Fabulous. Can't wait to see what we get next.
Probably no one, like Florida and a few other markets.

I don't dislike Peter Baugh. He's a good writer. He just didn't know shit about hockey when he started covering the Avs. He's just now starting to get it, and he's more comfortable spouting off advanced stats than writing about the game.

Now the Avalanche certainly never did him, or Ryan Clark for that matter, any favors with how tight lipped they are about everything under the sun. But...Baugh basically has zero contacts in the NHL. How's he going to cover the league at large, let alone an original six team with one of the more knowledgable obnoxious fan bases.

[edit...Now watch the Athletic go and hire Patrick Roy to cover the Avalanche.]

I take this as The New York Times still struggling with the cash flow for The Athletic. Baugh is way too inexperienced of a writer for that large of a market. I finally gave up my subscription after multiple $1 per month things because I just found myself never reading it or needing to read it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they attempt some sort of crossover coverage. Either from another market or a different sport to patch work it. The Athletic has been moving this direction for a while and even that Baugh move continues that trend since he's covering an area, not just one team.

We can't really blame those guys leaving after establishing themselves when we have Fort Knox as an organization. That has to be extremely frustrating for a journalist covering the team.

I find it ironic that the Athletic sold themselves to a newspaper when their whole model came to be because newspapers were laying off all the sports journalists.

I'd say it's the size of the market. Doubt the Avs being more tight lipped with media has next to nothing to do with the moves.

It is one of those things that because NYT owns them and they trying to put on a professional look, they probably only hire peeps with degrees and ones that have it in journalism/communication/whatever. Really limits the possibilities of getting an actual hockey person here when most, especially Americans grow up only knowing throwball, basketball, and baseball. That's what happened with Clark and Baugh hires.

In the end it's a shame that the Athletic would rather send someone from another state who knows nothing about hockey to cover the Avs (Baugh and Clark) than hiring someone local who knows the sport and the team and would do a much better job.

Those people exist. I feel like someone like Meghan would do a very good job. She knows her team, she's a good writer and she's very meticulous. She's miles better than Clark and Baugh TBH.

I don’t get to watch many Avs games these days but my father came over and put on tonight’s broadcast. We flipped over to the MSGSN broadcast for 2nd and 3rd periods. Holy hell is it such a difference. Moser and Rycroft are absolutely horrid as announcers;
You’re correct… Isles have a Fing great crew though. Burke, Goring and sometimes Hickey is just top notch.

Avs have no athletic beat writer and that loser franchise in MIN has two. I unfollowed and didn’t read Peter not long after he started. He didn’t\ doesn’t know crappy about hockey.

also he has he/him in his bio, that stuff drives me crazy for some reason.

I've been meaning to ask about that Gorilla outfit. I've seen a few interview videos posted on here by them. Do they do a lot of Avs coverage?
