I'm totally bullshitting you. There would be a MASSIVE meltdown among Avs fans if he took the job.
He's actually moved into my top two respected beat writers. I mean, he's a huge homer for the Wild, but when he writes bits and pieces for their league coverage, his breadth of knowledge is really impressive. Would love the Athletic to get George Richards. He'd be a fantastic get for the Avs beat but I think he's done with life north of Ft. Meyers, FL. *LOL*

I've always maintained that Russo is one of the best in the business. And I've always insisted that I don't think he's a gigantic homer in his writing, though he obviously is on social media. No beat writer rips into the team he's covering like he does, he practically eviscerated them with a piece on Paul Fenton's chaotic (and short) tenure. The only guy I'd even think about putting above him in the hockey scribe world is Aaron Portzline.

Yeah it was super-weird with Richards. He covered the Panthers forever, took a job to cover the Blue Jackets for the local paper there after Portzline jumped ship to The Athletic, then took a job at The Athletic to cover the Panthers again, then got laid off and started his own Hockey Now branch. So yeah I doubt he's moving anywhere and HIGHLY unlikely he works for The Athletic again.

I dunno what happens at this point, would not be surprised to see them not fill the void and just do it by committee (again, they have literally ZERO people covering the Florida teams after pink-slipping Richards and letting Joe Smith move to Minnesota) and that would likely have me reconsider my subscription. So many other palatable options now with CHN, DNVR, The Rink, and hell, even the Denver Post upped their game bringing in Corey Masisak (from, you guessed it, The Athletic).

Now that Baugh is gone is there any other people on the beat that tweets during games Avs when something is happening? Evan is still doing it but not always.

At one point we had several ppl doing it. The live coverage is going the wrong way and that really sucks.

Went for a walk earlier and had to listen McGahey for the first time this season and it was God damn painful.

I had no idea in which zone the puck was 70% of the time. For example, at one point I thought Av players were passing to each other in the neutral zone until he YELLED that Georgiev made a huge glove save. I concluded that the Avs were trying unsuccessfully to clear the puck out of the d-zone before the shot.

I listened to hockey on the radio all my life, I'm used to it. I'm sorry but this is unbelievably bad.

Dmac and Jesse do it. Dmac isn't really a hockey guy though and will always prioritize the other major three over the Avs.

Jesse doesn't do it during the games. Baugh (and Clark before him) was tweeting instantly whenever there was a goal, a fight, or something interesting. The DNVR guys used to do it too. Even Dater did it.

Personally I like it because I can't always watch the games but I see the tweets live.

On my twitter feed I see Jesse pop up every now and then, but not nearly as much as Baugh did. I did like that too, hopefully the athletic assigns someone else to us and starts doing it.

Baugh wrote an article about a female Olympic swimmer. Perhaps he's going to cover the summer Olympics for the Athletic.

Meanwhile nothing on the Avs front. I guess we're now with those selected US cities with no Athletic beat writer for their NHL team. Wonderful.

I found it funny The Athletic put out a "New Years Resolutions: One Way Each Team Needs To Better Itself" article and what seems like Peter Baugh's final piece of writing for the Avs portion was "get clarity on the Gabriel Landeskog situation."

He could have chosen Georgiev, he could have chosen team defense, he could have chosen secondary scoring.

Instead he went with literally the one thing out of Colorado's control. It reeked of laziness on his way out.

Ryan Clark announced on twitter that he was leaving for the Kraken on Oct. 20. Baugh was announced as the Avs Athletic writer on Jan. 4.

Maybe give it a couple more months

So basically he’s going to cover several teams. Is he going to be alone at the Athletic to cover those teams?
At least Arthur Staple has been covering the Rangers/Islanders for the Athletic, and seems like he’s not going anywhere.

Ironic that he leaves to cover the NY teams and the Devils, and Corey Masisak, who covered the Devils for The Athletic, is now covering the Avs for the Denver Post.

So the guy who knows nothing about hockey learns about it in the wee diddy market nobody cares about and goes somewhere with an audience once he (seems to) know what he's talking about. Fabulous. Can't wait to see what we get next.
