That had absolutely nothing to do with it.
You like when your sports coverage overlaps with political and social topics?

Athletic had its quite share of those stories, especially under Clarke, but in the other sports they cover (Athletic has some of the best futball insiders). I let my subscription expire before they hired Baugh, so I haven't read too many of his stories (some free ones here and there). Nonetheless, The Athletic is better than say TheScore, who has a ton of those stories I don't care about, but one is free whereas the other one needs 15.99 a month to read every entire story.Neither do I and I never read that kind of story on the Athletic TBH.
Hate to break it to ya, but everything is political and social. Especially sports. You like when your sports coverage overlaps with political and social topics?
It f***ing sucks. You like when your sports coverage overlaps with political and social topics?
Look, I'm not saying there's no place for it. But for me personally, sports are entertainment and entertainment is what I do to escape the depressing f***ing realities of the world. So yeah, bringing that shit into my entertainment is kind of a big f***ing deal. That had absolutely nothing to do with it.
I’m not even trying to be all SJW I this case like I usually am, my point is there are much more obvious and simple reasons for The Athletic’s decline than any supposed bias in their reporting. If anything, stirring up controversy does the exact opposite in our clickbait economy.Look, I'm not saying there's no place for it. I enjoy the Athletic because a lot of it feels more like traditional journalism. Like any other media now there's a share of fluff and just blatant content for numbers sake, but if you follow some popular teams you get a lot. It won't be great for team-specific stuff for a lot of markets, but that's what local papers are supposed to be for. I've lived enough places that my teams are all over and it's nice to have a national sports site to put it all in one place. ESPN does not cut it anymore.I will say one other thing about the Athletic.
They have ventured farther into active social activism than I ever expected a journalism outfit to go. That may also be a reason for their declining subscriptions. They've gone beyond reporting to picking sides and that's a dangerous slope, even when picking the "right" side.

Yeah, like THN? I never got to experience their magazine. So they've always been trash lol.
The presason issues were tremendous! Not sure if it was because I was younger and the game was so fresh and exciting to me, but I miss those old THN's. The peak of hockey journalism IMO. Nothing ever really came close to replacing it.
Even the old newspaper ones were great. Their condition didn't hold up very well to time though.
Street & Smiths were great, I always got the college basketball one.The presason issues were tremendous!
I'm trying to remember who it was that did the college football season previews in the 80s that I loved too...Street & Smiths maybe?
Basically those pre-season magazines were everything pre-internet. So much excitement when they came out.
I sure as f*** hate it.You like when your sports coverage overlaps with political and social topics?
But I sure don’t wanna read your shitty take on it. If people wanna talk about politics join a political board. Take your shitty opinions out into the world and get your jaw busted for it. It’s truly amazing how no one wants to talk about that shit in the real world… at least to me atleastHate to break it to ya, but everything is political and social. Especially sports.

I kinda get why they would shut it down, because things are getting worse and worse when it comes to discussing politics anywhere. But it's kinda ridiculous when we can't even discuss the next best-on-best tournament, because those threads get locked because naturally things go into politics because... you know. We are supposed to be a hockey forum but can't discuss the next Olympics.Hfboards used to have a politcs board. I truly enjoyed the fact that there was a place where people who wanted to, could go and discuss politics.
Unfortunately, as in real life, politics don't get discussed so much on a hockey board as it gets yelled in loud caps by people who will never actually read, listen to or try to understand someone who doesn't agree 100% with them. That place scarred me worse than the main board Trade page.
This is a hockey discussion board…I don’t mind a civil discussion, that rarely if ever happens when it comes to politics. This is an ice hockey forum. Not a political forum, if you’re so charged up over partisan politics take it to Facebook, political forums, city council meetings. I come here to talk about ANYTHING but that shit. If I am gonna worry about something I can’t control, I’d rather be it about hockey.Imagine discussing things on a discussion board
There's rules in place and they are enforced here, but to pretend that you can just simply avoid anything "political" is fairytale. It is part and parcel of society.
And if you're throwing punches over politics you go to jail. You do it too much here you get banned.
We can only blame ourselves. We can’t keep it civil. So….i mean look at the types of people are on this forum and how the flip out about a game… sometimes the game day threads are almost unreadableI kinda get why they would shut it down, because things are getting worse and worse when it comes to discussing politics anywhere. Has there been any word about the new Avs scribe for the Athletic? Do we not get one anymore?
Not that I don't believe this, but I don't see any mention of this online. You'd think we'd see something this week by someone, even a bot. It's Russo.
