So why can they only represent one single player?

I look at the NBA as an example. They do retired numbers, yes, but 23 is not retired league wide. Just as many people associate 23 with Michael Jordan as they do LeBron James.

If a player grew up wanting to wear a number, they should be able to wear that number.

The Yankees retired #8, but for two different players - Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey.

In Denver news, when Peyton Manning came to Denver, there was the issue of the team having already 'retired' the number 18. I suspect that Frank Tripucka wasn't exactly turning in his grave about sharing with Manning.

You're remembering the Tripucka/Manning thing all wrong.

18 wasn't "retired," it was RETIRED, no quotes. Frank Tripucka was one of only three players to receive that honor by the Broncos so far, along with John Elway and Floyd Little.

Tripucka was still alive when Peyton Manning joined the Broncos and here's a link as to how everything went down. I believe this account to be reliable, but who knows. What matters is that the number really was retired and was briefly unretired with Tripucka's blessing.

Personally I'd retire Terrell Davis's 30 as well, but I get why football teams are always very reluctant to take numbers out of rotation.

At least this is some good news.

Its a start. By next season we'll have a handful of MLB teams operating on a new league-driven model. Let's hope KSE finds it acceptable enough so we can all watch the games without having to subscribe to one of two services that few use.

Really nice semi-autobiographical article about Jussi Parkkila on the Athletic. This is the kind of stuff I like, well this and even more so the deeper dives on the players.

[Edit...did I misspell Jussi's last name or did the editor in the little blurb above?]

good read. I don't have a tenth of that dude's hustle, he was dealt a thoroughly average hand but made it all the way to the show.

So Altitude won't broadcast round 1 at all? Or are they just giving up right so there are zero blackouts and still broadcasting?

They're just giving up the rights so there's no blackouts. You can still watch on Altitude if you have it, but if you have Comcast or Dish you can watch the national broadcast on ESPN/TNT with no problem.

Baugh has been putting out a lot of good stuff.

BTW for anyone who subscribes to The Athletic, never pay full price. Make sure you cancel before it renews because they'll offer you a really good deal to stay on. Mine was set to renew for $70 in June so I made sure to go and cancel before that happens. They immediately hit me with an offer of $12 to renew for another year, which was even less than the $20 I paid last year.

Last year I paid $9.99 for the whole year. This year it was like $20.

They had a whole bunch of layoffs and salary cuts already and are really desperate to bring in more subscribers. Won't be surprised if they pull the plug in 2024.

It's a really tough business model.

Does the athletic even have anyone left? They got rid of literally anyone who had a reputable career it seemed like.
In hockey they still have LeBrun who's their biggest name. Then they have lesser guys with good reputation like Pronman, Luszczyszyn, Portzline, etc.

The Avalanche youtube page has been firing out the #content the past few days:

Newhook's favourite film is Now You See Me and Georgiev is a bit weird

I thought Georgie came off hilarious. He should show his personality more.

Also Frankie cracked the code on that game. Just answer yes or no or you.

Yeah they still got guys but I absolutely hate that they have one guy covering all the southern California teams, one guy covering both New York teams (might also be covering New Jersey too) and did away with a couple people who played a part in me subscribing in the first place. They also have one big ad on every story you scroll past which really annoys me.

The Wild have two Athletic people for some reason. Russo and the guy who covered TB last year

Did ESPN+ remove the ability to rewind or start games from the begining while live for the playoffs again? Not available for me on either game right now.

You advertise that as a selling point for the service we pay you for.
