So why can they only represent one single player?
I look at the NBA as an example. They do retired numbers, yes, but 23 is not retired league wide. Just as many people associate 23 with Michael Jordan as they do LeBron James.
If a player grew up wanting to wear a number, they should be able to wear that number.
The Yankees retired #8, but for two different players - Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey.
In Denver news, when Peyton Manning came to Denver, there was the issue of the team having already 'retired' the number 18. I suspect that Frank Tripucka wasn't exactly turning in his grave about sharing with Manning.
