This RSO mess could be a huge issue for the NHL. They seem pretty certain to lose out on a couple hundred million this year. Next year will be well over 300m with ease if Bally and and AT&T don't pay. We're talking a 5% minimum loss in HRR next year... could be up to 7%. We might see another 2 seasons of flat cap, maybe 3 if the replacements can't come online.
This will accelerate the Houston/Atlanta expansion process.

I'm not sure it will have too much of an impact there. Expansion is more about getting money in the owner's pockets and widening the net on national TV deals. Maybe if the NHL has to co-fund something with MLB for broadcasts... but I'd guess that would touch HRR anyway and wouldn't sway that process. If anything, having to deal with a different crisis likely makes expansion a lower priority.

More of the RSO issue is that the NHL will have to up their sponsorship yet again to overcome the lucrative RSO money. Otherwise there just isn't really a way to up HRR and thus the cap becomes more of a problem for the PA. I'd say odds are increasing we don't see much of a cap increase for the 24-25 season. This could have a cascading impact where it puts in jeopardy the whole pie. Numbers around Bally alone are upwards of $350m and that isn't even half the league or Canada (which is probably safe for now). Start chipping away at the others and $500m of a hit isn't out of the question. That's within earshot of the ESPN and TNT deals combined (650m).

Diamond officially in Chapter 11. They have enough cash to operate through the playoffs while in the process, but teams won’t be getting paid.

Edit: sounds like teams have been paid so far and the current plan is to pay. Good news there.

Appreciate you posting this stuff.

I feel like it's totally under the radar.

Does she have a significant other? If so, she'll be fine until she finds something else...like Altitude again...perhaps?
I wasn’t commenting on her financial well-being, it would just suck to set down roots doing something you love and in an area you wanted to live only for the possibility for all that to be turned on its head. I’m lucky to have lived this long and never been terminated or laid off, but my old man got downsized roughly three times and basically changed careers each time. Kept food on the table but it still sucked for him or anyone else in that situation.

Also, I can’t imagine Altitude pays a lot.

We are clearly being shits because cats generally land on their feet.

In all seriousness we’ve no idea how this paradigm shift will shake out. A lot of people both behind and in front of the camera might be left out in the cold. We’re already seeing it with MLS, near as I can tell Altitude’s team covering the Rapids haven’t found new gigs.

The eventual consolidation of sports coverage into one or two big streaming services will be convenient for us, I’m not so sure that’s a good thing for those who get paid to cover the sport.

Now that is very true, and unfortunate.

That's the nature of technology though. These increases allow for consolidation into a larger company in order to have better profit margins. They might very well hire on-air talent regionally instead of locally. Meaning we share talent with other teams, or if they keep local PxP and Color, it very well could be a regional or national intermission show. There will be lots of ways for the NHL to make this work cost efficiently, but there is definitely a human toll.

With the best will in the world, people who watch sports want to watch sports. The people presenting it aren't really relevant.

Altitude was never getting back on to Comcast. Feel like that shipped sailed so long ago.

The only question left is if Kroenke is actually gonna keep dumping money into this venture. Will be pretty incredible if he does in the face of all these bankruptcies of networks like Altitude.
