Nope. He's hired and paid by the owners to represent them. Not represent the sport of hockey.

They (the owners) are the NHL and Bettman is their voice.
I understand who Bettman is and what his job is. My issue is that he always pretends as if that is not true, and that he is some sort of Hockey Saint, with the good of the game at heart. Thus the situation with game management by officials, and don't even get me started on the entire nonsense with the Vegas Knights. I am old enough to remember when commissioners stood up to idiot owners in all 4 major sports. Even Pete Rozelle, the king of media hype, stood his ground when owners acted up.

I like how Bettman said the solution to the TV deal in Colorado might be streaming. As if that wasn't obvious like five years ago, or whenever the hell this mess started, but they never seemed to consider it.

Looks to me like the issue is just stubborn pride. Kroenke could fix this numerous ways, but he doesn't want to bend to the will of Comcast, so everyone else has to suffer. He's playing a game of chicken. Can he outlast them until cable starts to finally die off and they become more desperate.

Also pretty clear they've been waiting to win the Cup to have better leverage at the bargaining table. Probably why they postponed that meeting they were supposed to have earlier to try and resolve this.

I don't know if anyone else is watching ESPN+'s Quest for the Stanley Cup show but it's fantastic and has a lot of Avs coverage in it.
I love how they showcase the Oilers players laughing on the golf course when they were down 3-0 in the series. Says soooo much...lol Also, Cooper looks like a douche. I appreciate how Bednar gives them nothing! So many lines to read between here.

I was surprised by that too, but I think they just made a continuity error. They were way too upbeat and happy. I think they probably shot that in between series before they played the Avs.

Other similar segments look like they were shot before the series started too.

Idk about ya'll but I don't use cable to watch hockey games lol...
Man my buddy watches on sportsnet and we call eachother during every playoff game and he's a good 30 seconds behind my stream. Couldn't believe that.

I really hate how the athletic beat writers cram down the opposing teams beat writers crap into their feeds. I assume they are told to and maybe it shouldn’t annoy me but I bet I have almost every one of the teams athletic beat writers muted at this point. Glad my sub that accidentally got renewed at full price expires next month.

Dater doesn’t even care or try anymore, not sure if his creds were revoked but I don’t think he goes to games or pressers at all.

How Mike Chambers still has a job, I have no idea, he’s the worst.

Rant over

That's media for you these days. More of it than ever and its worse quality than ever too.

They all work for The Athletic. The more clicks the more $ they make. It's not like it's the Denver Post promoting the Tampa Bay Times.

It's ridiculous that in the age of streaming and on demand TV, there is no way for an Avalanche fan who doesn't have Direct TV at home to legally watch a regular season Avalanche game in the comfort of their own home.

I'm beyone tired of watching it on the computer in my office because my Chromecast stopped working reliably and it's a pain in the a** to stream from my phone to my TV and even when it works the stream is spotty at times.

This whole thing is beyond stupid. Kroenke could easily make the games available through a streaming service or allow fans to buy an Altitude TV streaming package.

I totally agree that it is stubborn pride from a billionaire who is out of touch with reality and the common working class person.

Funny story - I've worked in video streaming for like 8 years or something now. A previous company I worked for handled live events for some big players (and lots of regional sports broadcasters). I approached one of the VPs at the time about talking to Altitude so we could stream for them, and he followed up with me the next day that one of their executives reached out but Kroenke wouldn't do it because we were owned by Verizon at the time and he had some beef with Verizon years ago so he didn't want to give them the business

The Altitude thing has got to be resolved this summer. They can't let it go on after this. Even if it ends in defeat, it has to end...enough already.

Incidentally are Richard Fleming and Marcello Balboa (and anyone else working full-time on Rapids broadcasts) out of work now? Fleming seemed pretty psyched about the Apple TV/MLS deal.

@Foppa2118 looks like Adam Foote feels the same way we do re: Red Wings getting all the coverage of the rivalry over the years while nobody gives the Avs proper credit/respect despite the Avs actually winning the head to head matchup.

The Athletic had an article with the directors and before they interviewed Foote he made a comment to them on how he feels the Avalanche side has not been covered nearly as much as the Red Wings side over the years and that he hopes this documentary will be fair to the Avs. The director said that comment stuck with him because he actually agreed with it when looking back at how the media portrays the rivalry.
