I don’t know if it will be five years as they already have two pieces in place (Nico and Hughes) and are getting a third with a likely top-6 pick this year. But it isn’t going to be next year.

The good news is with Nico signed long term this window of rebuild is longer than the short window they had after they traded for Hall.
We'd need to get a great return for Coleman, including a younger player capable of playing in the NHL, for it to be anything but a 5 year rebuild deal. Sure his deal is up next year, but if anyone thinks we're 2-3 years from being competitive than you keep Coleman and re-sign him next summer.

It was a rhetorical question. The answer was obviously no. I was surprised to see someone actually suggesting that he'd fetch a blue-chipper or 1st, hence my question

Timmins and a 1st I could see. One of Newhook/Byram by themselves I could even see. If only because I don't believe the Devils would trade him for anything less.

Gotta wait to see what the return is first on Coleman before claiming rebuild #2 is underway. Maybe we get a younger NHL-er in return, like a hockey trade the Friedman reported we're looking to make. I wouldn't use the Greene trade as an example. There isn't a hockey trade to be made for Greene, it had to be futures.

So Shero didn't want to go scorched earth and ownership obviously did. The "we want to win" stuff was just to save face.

Or Shero convinced them that his core could win back in the offseason. That was proved wrong. They wanted change, this is it.

Can't say I blame them. They were f***ing putrid before the Hall/Hynes/Shero moves.

I suspect it’s just a matter of time until he’s traded.

Where there is smoke, there is fire. Sadly, I agree with you. Unless the return is amazing (Byram- and we know that’s not happening). I will not be happy with this. Coleman and Palms are the kind of guys you build around.

Coleman is worth a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to me. He's paid like a 4th line UFA while producing like a 2nd liner. He immediately becomes a team's best penalty killer. If they're not getting a 1st and a valuable piece besides, they've blown it.
Yup, haul needs to be fantastic. He's one of the best penalty killers in the league on top of being a quality 2nd liner. He brings great energy and is a great minute eating player as he's shown here repeatedly.

"Precautionary reasons"... he'll be dealt.

What a ****ing shame. Coleman is a guy you build around.

Coleman is a UFA next year and could walk for nothing. He’s also going to get a huge contract and will be over 30 by the time the Devils are legitimate contenders. Great player, absolutely love him, no brainer to trade him now at peak value.

Coleman is one of the last players we should trade.
His value in trade isn’t even close to how valuable he is to the team.
Things that cannot really be measured in trade value like how hard Coleman tries . He gives it 100% every game , every shift , no matter what the score is and truly is all about winning .
The devils need that in the room and on the ice to show our younger players how to be a pro and how to play the game .
Coleman took the long route making the NHL and has been nothing but a trooper since then .
Trading him , to me , would look like crap optically to the rest of the players . Coleman gives it his all and this is what he got for his efforts ?
I agree that the Devils need as many assets as possible to turn the team around , but not at the cost of a player like Coleman .

Id put the list of players that should be untouchable as :
Nico
Hughes
Smith
Blackwood
Coleman

Gusev
Palms
Bratt
Boqvist

Severson

Having said that , the only true “untouchables” are Nico and Hughes
If someone offers a crazy overpayment on anyone but those two , I guess you have to consider it , but to me it would have to be crazy as in Boeser for Coleman and a pick / prospect crazy

We're going to have to trade a piece we don't want in order to fix the defense. The defense is THAT bad. Outside of Severson and maybe PK(who is a shell of what he used to be) the defense needs to be fixed immediately. Its pathetic. I think Coleman is one big piece and I honestly think Bratt may be another.

Unfortunate thing is we don't have anything much outside of them up front. On the back end things aren't looking great either...I could see us needing another 3-4 years TBH.

Well hopefully they can acquire an extra 1st round pick this year and a second round pick. 3 first rounds picks and a second gives you some capital to make a trade to bring in pieces.

I could see a 1st potentially, but Byram isn't going anywhere. A couple of days ago stories were flying around that Byram could get traded for Connor, and now suddenly Coleman is good enough to fetch Byram - one of the best blueline prospects in hockey? I don't see it.

I'd think it's a combo involving some of Jost, Kaut, 1st, and other prospects/picks. I could see Rosén being of interest to Devils.

1. The deals y’all are taking about are realistic. Coleman’s great but not 1st+great prospect great.

2. If they’re rebuilding, which I think they are, you don’t really build around a soon to be 29 year old UFA who will start his next big contract at 30. He’s awesome and a fantastic player but not a player for a rebuild.

By the way: the Devils traded their captain Andy Greene today.

The last time the Devils traded their captain was Jamie Langenbrunner. The conditional pick we got back ended up being a 3rd in 2011, which we used to select....Blake Coleman

You build around Nico and Jack, not Coleman. And while he's an awesome player, a fan favourite and on a solid contract right now, if you can get a piece that helps to rebuild around those two (a good, younger NHL player or a really good prospect) then you do it. No questions. I don't really want to trade Coleman either but I'll wait to see what the return is before saying anything.
