It was a rhetorical question. The answer was obviously no. I was surprised to see someone actually suggesting that he'd fetch a blue-chipper or 1st, hence my question

Aside from the lack of leading comprehension...the guy you're referencing was saying he wouldn't be happy with anything less than that, which is a gauge of how much Coleman means to the team, not his league-wide value...yes, a ~2nd line (middle-6 at worst), 20-25 goal, elite PKer, on a 1.8M cap hit thru next year is worth a 1st to a cap strapped playoff team. That's not even questionable.

Coleman is not being moved without a 1st and/or borderline blue chip prospect coming back. Too many playoffs teams have brutal cap issues. He’s making 1.8m next year, hell, if NJ retains salary his value is absolutely bonkers.

The weird part of this is Colorado is the unicorn with cap space. They have some RFA and maybe they want to make an offer to Hall.

I assume that the ex-TSN guy got a tip and ran with it in hopes of gaining relevancy. If he was with a real sports news organization he would have at most tweeted about hearing a rumor, rather than claiming it was a fact before confirming it.

You build around Nico and Jack, not Coleman. And while he's an awesome player, a fan favourite and on a solid contract right now, if you can get a piece that helps to rebuild around those two (a good, younger NHL player or a really good prospect) then you do it. No questions. I don't really want to trade Coleman either but I'll wait to see what the return is before saying anything.
Literally no one is saying "build around Coleman," no one.

We are building around Nico and Jack, Coleman is around Nico and Jack. we are building with the Colemans, Palms and Gusevs, not around them.

Disagree.

Let's not exaggerate things here.
1 playoff win since 2012
top-4 draft pick (Larsson) traded for a superstar (Hall), the superstar traded
underwhelming 1st rounders
good developped picks like Coleman traded
underwhelming free agents signings
and the good trades (Palmieri, Vatanen) are probably going to be traded as well.

Sound a lot like the Oilers or Sabres.

Trading everyone over 28 is how you end up in a perpetual rebuild. It's okay to have older guys on your team.

Kind of weird how that was never a concern when we extended Greene ans Zajac all those years ago, yet suddenly is now.

you got to pick and choose your battles.

Normally I’d just ignore this but since he’s being precautionary scratched he’s most likely played his last game with the Devils. Just have to hope the return is optimal. If it’s the Avs I wouldn’t mind a one for one with Zadorov.

Also, I can see this false news just driving up the price for him.

There are literally 2 posts in the last 2 pages that said Coleman is a guy to build around. I don't know if they're being serious or not but they're there.

And I said I don't really want to trade Coleman either in my post, because I agree he'd be a good piece to have alongside Nico and Jack. But if the return is good enough then so be it, there's no denying Coleman's value is very high right now, perhaps the highest it'll ever be.

A guy making sub-$2M in a cap world for this season and next who is an elite PKer AND scores 20+ goals a year is 100% worth at least a first or a high-end prospect.

exactly this. The fact he’s under contract cheap next year drives his return up. I see a similar package to what hall got.

I’d be really pissed if we deal him. He’s been so good. If it’s not a huge overpayment, **** off.

You say tomato, I say tom-ah-to.

I don't view the Devils as the Oilers or Sabres now or EVER.

Nor do I give a rat's ass what THOSE franchises did.

Different circumstances, different management, different environment.

I am concerned only with the Devils and what they do currently; not make pointless comparisons with other teams that serve no purpose.

Are we? We’ll be on our fourth GM and third rebuild in less than a decade with one quickie playoff exit to show for it, we’ll okay 2.5 rebuilds cause Lou only tried to rebuild on D and in net.

I agree with this, but don't think a Coleman trade means the Devils for sure are trading guys like Gusev, Zajac, Palmieri, etc. Might just be the return justifies it.

I think this is just a semantics argument, along the lines of "is this player a bust or just a dissapointment". They're probably using "a player you build around" as in like...a valuable contributor/key part to a winning team and not along the lines of a foundational piece/generational player.
