Yea but at some point we are going to have enough skill and enough shooting and will be trying to trade for guys like Coleman and over paying to do so.

Maybe we just have a different view of when it's possible this team can make a playoff push. I think with the right moves it can be done by next year, but def by two years. Coleman would still have a huge role one this team, and if he won't resign next year and we aren't pushing, trade him then.

No matter the return, trading him at least points to being a few years out.

The trouble the Devils have is that they're bad and 3 of their best forwards are UFA next season. I don't think it makes sense to keep them all regardless of what happens next season - even if there is a miracle run to the playoffs or something close, hanging on to all of them would be a mistake, and signing all of them long-term would be a mistake. Trading Coleman now mitigates some of that risk. The Devils are strongest in penalty-killing forwards - Zacha and Rooney are decent, Zajac's still okay, Anderson looks like he might have a good future there - and while I love Coleman, there's a decent chance this is his peak. I don't think treading him means that the Devils are punting on next season, though I admit they'll have a challenging time selling that to the fans.

I get not wanting to overpay for coleman next summer. But unless the return is nuts I dont see why we cant wait a yr and do this next season

You get a better return for someone signed an extra year, especially at his salary. Im sure we will get a great return

Boston could make sense as to why it hasn't been announced given that they are playing right now.

A trade with Boston would be an absolute disaster because they have nothing worthwhile that they'd be willing to trade; a first round pick that will be in the 25-31 range and a future bottom six grinder in John Beecher is probably the best they can offer.

I have a very bad feeling about this and that we're looking at being the laughing stock of the league for years to come on a Mike Milbury level.

I don't want to see Coleman traded but we're not trading a 20 year old Chara here. Even a bad return for Coleman doesn't equal the disaster return Milbury got for an overrated Yashin.

You don't trade Coleman (or Palmieri) because they're theoretically at the peak of their value. You do it if you are getting something you are positive can help the team in the future. If the main piece coming back in a Coleman trade is a first round pick from a team like Colorado or Boston, there is absolutely no hope for this team while the owners and their spreadsheet perennial losers Dellow and Cain are around.

Fitz is trying to prove he's the guy for the job, and if not here as a GM for another team. He knows how valuable Coleman is, and trading him would hopefully yield a return that reflects that and not just a trade for the sake of burning everything down. I see no reason not to trust him right now. He also just got a 2nd for Greene.

I'd take Vaak over Beecher, but yeah, the prospect pool isn't ideal

Coleman could decide to retire after he gets traded and it wouldn't matter. It would be trading a good and very valuable player for a magic beans package. It would be more evidence that this is a loser organization, if more evidence were needed.

So what do you suggest they do exactly?

Carry on as is?

Guess we should have held on to Hall too then. Keep everybody and when they walk we get nothing. What a winning formula that would be!

A 1st and one of Studnicka/Vaak would be a fine return for Coleman. A 1st, Studnicka/Vaak, and Backes would be tougher to accept because it would feel like a lost opportunity to do the Leafs/Canes Marleau trade.

If Coleman is traded, looks like Zadorov is coming, because of the Andy Greene trade timing.

I suggest that they don't trade him unless it's an offer that's too good to pass up. The best deal Boston will likely offer us would involve a combination of assets (Beecher and their 2020 first) that have roughly a 50% chance of becoming one average NHL player in 3 years. I would take my chances of keeping Coleman around for at least another year unless, at the very least, I'm getting a prospect with a lot of upside. Boston doesn't have anything like that to offer, which means it's probably what's going to happen because reasons.

Man, I'm going to miss pickles. Remember that lady who had a pickles doll? With Coleman and Greene gone, who is the "professional" to mentor the kids, Zajac? Can Subban (and I'm a fan of PK) go instead of Vats?

What would NJ fans want as a plus from Colorado if Zadorov was the centerpiece return?

Too complicated of a question now. I think Colorado's offer was very good (maybe Zadorov + 2nd) but I think someone topped it last minute and bidding war started.

We'll find out soon. It will be a good deal for NJ, but fair for the other team as well.
