He isn't pending until next year. At some point we will need secondary players.

but if you are going to get max value the decision has to be made now. Otherwise you just get pennies on the dollar next year.

Given the organization’s situation I doubt anyone is going to indicate that they are open to an extension. Thus you got make the call now. Obviously it depends on return.

You say tomato, I say tom-ah-to.

I don't view the Devils as the Oilers or Sabres now or EVER.

Nor do I give a rat's ass what THOSE franchises did.

Different circumstances, different management, different environment.

I am concerned only with the Devils and what they do currently; not make pointless comparisons with other teams that serve no purpose.
I agree, but what I mean is :
the "rebuild", btw of trading veterans for picks, and the tanking, is not a winning formula.
I don't remember a lot of teams who were successful like that. Maybe the Penguins, but they picked Crosby and Malkin and it was huge.

Are we? We’ll be on our fourth GM and third rebuild in less than a decade with one quickie playoff exit to show for it, we’ll okay 2.5 rebuilds cause Lou only tried to rebuild on D and in net.

I just like to keep a Level-head here instead of tossing around end-of-the-world proclamations like "WAAAAH!! WE ARE THE OILERS!!! WAAAAH! WE ARE THE SABRES!!!". Come on now....

It seems I have much more faith in this franchise than most apparently.

A first absolutely will be part of the return. No way it goes down without that unless it's a single high end prospect instead.

Edit: Or I guess a roster player signed longer term, but the fact that two teams are in on it makes it sound like a prospect/pick deal.

He’s gone and it’s gonna suck. The return I’d want for him is so high nobody is paying. But I get that we’re years away from competing and basically wasting Coleman’s career here. Btw someone check on that sick kid whose favorite player is Coleman..

Yeah I agree with that.

And you have to be extremely lucky to hit on players like that.

But the situation is what it is.

I just hope the return for Pickles is worth it (and it better be an NHL Player we get back).

Well hopefully they can acquire an extra 1st round pick this year and a second round pick. 3 first rounds picks and a second gives you some capital to make a trade to bring in pieces.
That is certainly true. If we could make 3 first round picks this year, in 3 years that could be hopefully a couple of solid pieces as well.

Yea but at some point we are going to have enough skill and enough shooting and will be trying to trade for guys like Coleman and over paying to do so.

Maybe we just have a different view of when it's possible this team can make a playoff push. I think with the right moves it can be done by next year, but def by two years. Coleman would still have a huge role one this team, and if he won't resign next year and we aren't pushing, trade him then.

No matter the return, trading him at least points to being a few years out.

If he’s gonna be moved, package him with Vatanen and the 2nd we got and swing for the fences. Get an actual top prospect+.

I don't see the Devils intentionally tanking next year. They will try to compete but won't destroy their future in order to do so. This trade seems to be recognizing:

1. The current situation of the team (not close)
2. Coleman's value will never be higher
3. Coleman has more value to a team closer to cap than NJ

On paper it makes sense to trade him and it also makes sense to try AND still extend Palmieri/Gusev this offseason if the price is right.

Capitals sell off in 2004 put them in position to win the lottery and draft Ovechkin and draft some of the guys who were key in that initial wave the Caps has coming out of the lockout.

The Lightning selling off some of the left overs from their Cup set the stage for their current team as well.

The only good thing about this rumor is that Coleman is being sold high and the return should be crazy.

but both teams were not bad for 8 years and counting... just 1 or 2 bad years.

I get not wanting to overpay for coleman next summer. But unless the return is nuts I dont see why we cant wait a yr and do this next season

Because as seen with Taylor Hall, it dramatically reduces a player’s value when you trade him as a rental. The time to do it is now.
