Confirmed Signing with Link: [COL] Tyson Barrie (4 years, $5.5M AAV)

If the Avs get one more top 4 defenseman I think their defense would shape up quite well.

I feel confident that Zadorov is already exactly that. He showed that he can be top 4 last year but the Avs wanted him playing 25 minutes a night in SA instead. Now he's a year older and has apparently turned a lot of his baby fat into muscle over the first few months of the summer.

Fans are weird.

Player X signs a 4 year deal:
"Four years is too short of time."

Player Y signs a 7 year deal:
"Way too long, don't like that term."

Not necessarily. More so has to do with what age the contract takes a player to and how many UFA years that buys out.

Barrie is still so young the longer he is under your control and the more UFA years you buy out the better.

On the other hand contracts like Ladd and Backes where we've probably already seen the best of what they have to offer and will be heading into their late 30's in the latter years of their contracts are the deals that you question the term.

The whole system is what is messed up.

Huh. I still expect him to be traded at some point, but at least this signing gives him value. Deal buys only one UFA year, too. Still, pretty decent deal. Congrats, Avs fans.

And people were saying the Avs should never deal with Newport again. Surprised he signed for less than 6, good deal for the Avs.

I stand by that. A different agency and he probably would've signed the exact same deal well before it came to arbitration. Newport always try to take it to the limit.

Not a bad age to become a UFA. Will probably be in line for one more massive contract at that point provided his play continues to be at the current level or better.

Kind of like shattenkirk when he signed for 4 years in 2013.

This seems like a pretty good deal.

Until you consider the fact they failed to pay market value and only agreed to one UFA year for their top defensemen who their coach has had had publicized issues with. I'd be surprised if Barrie didn't test free agency as soon as he could afterwards.

Wel he only turned 25 last week. He will be 28 when he officially becomes a UFA

It's a four year deal.. So for the next four seasons he will have this contract.. BY the time season 5 begins he will be 29 and apparently will be almost donezz co suffering someone as elite as Shea weber is done at 30.

He should have signed a one year deal and the. Try to get a seven or eight year deal next summer

Which is exactly why the AAV is lower than expected. He knows he'll make a lot of money in 4 years.

A team that failed to make the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years shouldn't be that close to the cap.

It's called Iggy and Sturat (bought-out) taking up 9 million in cap space for 1 more year. And all core players are signed now. Plenty of cash available next year.

publicized issues? Link?

It's a pretty good compromise contract that doesn't give ether side exactly what they wanted but let's both sides walk away from the table thinking they accomplished something. For the Avs, a four year window at that price is both enough security to take this issue off the table for some time and it's a pretty fair AAV that leaves the club with flexibility. For Barrie...he's getting paid and he's got 4 years to prove he's a consistent top 10 offensive defensemen in this league - which, if he does, means that the Avs or somebody else will pay him BIG as he'll be 29 and peaking heading into that contract year (same age as Yandle was this off-season).

This is true, but the situation looks better after this upcoming season.

Exactly, a new GM made a couple mistakes that makes the cap look bad (Iginla, Stuart contracts) but Sakic's rookie mistakes will be off the books next year, and hopefully he's learned from those not to jump the gun on vets after 1 playoff appearance.

Yeah, just like everyone was so sure ROR would test free agency.
