Not that I think this is likely, but he becomes UFA at age 27 even if he doesn't play for COL again.

I don't believe that to be the case, however even if it was, what's that 2-3 years in the KHL? He'd have to have a major problem with Sakic and Roy to consider something drastic like that.

Arbitration is binding. He'd have a two year contract to come back to to fulfill. The years on that contract aren't going to start ticking away if he's overseas.

Proof? Vladimir Sobotka. He's 29, still owes the Blues one year from a contract awarded from arbitration.

That'd be my take as well, it is a NHL binding arbitration so his NHL rights at that price would be retained by the Avs.

I have to believe that Sakic would be demanding a lot more than Reinhart alone.

A lot more? You realize Reinhart was the 2nd Overall pick in 2014 and is coming off of a 42 point rookie season as a 20 year old, right? Sam Reinhart in any hypothetical deal with the Sabres would be a fantastic return.

Considering Barrie was voted #29, and Risto #30, I think it's pretty fair

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=2110683

Ristolainen has legitimate #1 potential, and may be that as soon as next season if he isn't already there. It would be counterproductive for the Sabres to move Ristolainen for Barrie and the Avs would have to add to pull Ristolainen from them

I think it's more likely the Avs don't like the arbitration decision and want to trade him away, rather than Barrie not being happy and wanting to force a trade. Neither will happen, but regardless I expect Barrie to win big time.

The Avs more than likely won't mind the arbitration number because it's less than 6, probably even going to be less than 5.5 on a short-term deal. Barrie is not going to win big time because the Avs hold all the leverage here. He's got 3 RFA years left, so regardless of this contract he's still going to be an RFA by the time he needs another deal. The Avs simply will not pay him more than 6M per season because he isn't worth that much money.

This is Newport trying to strong-arm the Avs once again similar to the way they did with Ryan O'Reilly, but in this scenario they hold almost no bargaining power at all. Come hell or high water Tyson Barrie will be an Avs player for 3 more years minimum unless Joe Sakic decides to trade him. So Barrie can either cry to his agents and demand more money than he's worth, not sign the arbitration award and sit out, or he can tell his agents to get a long-term deal done in a reasonable way like his current teammates who make up the core of the Avalanche have all happily done.

Barrie refusing to play due to the ruling of the arbitration he filed for would be a funny, frustrating, and entertaining. Similar to American politics.

HF would rip Sakic and the Avs to shreds because they are too cheap to pay their stars, and there would be an entire page of brutal trade proposals for at minimum a year due to Barrie's value being in the gutter due to his petulant behavior.

Would definitely make August and September go by faster though

Before that happens, if Barrie wins the arbitration award, and the Avs were amenable to trading him, what are their needs?

Are they looking for anything specific to help them now, or are they interested in increasing their prospect depth, or both?

A 25 year old RD.

Seriously though, why can't Colorado sign any of their players? I don't get it, they SHOULD want to lock up Barrie.

Like Landeskog, Duchene, EJ, Varly, and MacKinnon? I get that the arb guys get more pub, but it should be pretty obvious those other guys signed as they aren't currently playing for other teams.

There is clearly an issue with management. It is undeniable.

There certainly seems to be an issue between Newport and management. They haven't had a problem signing anyone else as I pointed out.

And it isn't crunch time yet on Barrie. I certainly would have preferred a long term deal now, but Barrie is still an RFA at the end of this next deal, regardless. So there's plenty of time to figure things out.

I'm not trying to start an argument, but that's the perception from the outside. Like I kinda get Statsny, but then ROR goes, and he wanted out bad. And now we've been hearing issues with Barrie for close to a year. It's crazy to me because the Avs need a player like him.

The Avs had no problem getting players like Landeskog, Duchene, EJ, Varlamov and MacKinnon under contract . When there's good faith between the agents and the Avs they get things done .

The problem with your comment is that you're only thinking about Ryan O'Reilly and Barrie, leaving all the other players that i stated above out of your equation. Both O'Reilly and Barrie have the same agent ( Newport ) and there seems to have some bad blood between the Avs and Newport ever since the first contract negociation with O'Reilly back when he decided to finally leave for the KHL .
We all know what happend with his last negociation with the Avs eventually leading to the trade with Buffalo . Newport are not stupid , it worked O'Reilly so they are playing the same game with Barrie...

So no , there's no problem with the Avs and any of their key players when their agents decide to negociate in good faith .

That third RFA year is what's giving Sakic the leverage with Barrie. Newport can't hold out for a straight-to-UFA deal like they did with ROR. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they were hoping for a three year offersheet.

Now Barrie will be signed for two years in the 5.? and will still be a RFA at the end of it. Avs could play him for another year or two before being worried about having to potentially trade him. Or they could always sign him if his defensive game flourishes under Pratt. I think that would have to happen for Avs management to be willing to give him the money he's asking for on a long term deal.

If the perception from the outside is, paraphrasing, "Colorado can't sign any of their players," then it's a perception I'll easily discount.

To say there's NO problem, is just being completely oblivious to the issue. Whether it's solely with Newport or some policy within management, they do seem to have more of an issue retaining core players than other teams do. Again, that point is indisputable. There should be a huge appetite here by the Avs to get Barrie locked up long term, but again they are playing hardball with a very good young player, that they have a need for.

To me it's more "here's another player they are playing hardball with".

Colorado should be an elite team with the picks they have had in recent years. If they have to deal Barrie for lesser pieces, that is going to be an enormous blow for them.

There is a difference between playing hardball in negotiations and not caving to every demand from a player/agent.

If you are getting to the point where you are losing multiple players, well I would say the tactic isn't working.

Stastny was a good call not to re-sign, they couldn't afford it and he's not worth 7 million. O'Reilly signed a two year deal in the KHL under the old regime, signed a two year offer-sheet structured to create an ugly QO, went the brink of arbitration, then demanded 8 million from the team. The first screw up might be Barrie.
