Because he showed elite numbers after only 4 games played. Don't look at his previous ~200 games of being bad/injury prone.
check his numbers in a month,

Georgiev was .918 his first year with Colorado. I even remember Colorado fans saying they got the best goalie from New York lmao. They are the same age and have the same stats 0.906 vs 0.905
uh Blackwood is .917 top 5 in the league and climbing

It was not an impulse decision based on those 4 games. I’m sure it didn’t hurt that they saw what they expected to see, but this team can’t keep burning assets on short term goalie band aids.

The Avs put a lot on their pro scouts on this one, wagering that his career numbers were largely a product of the teams he played on. Didn’t want to let that cat out of the bag and do other teams scouting for them. If he posts a .915 with the Avs this year, then we’d have competition to sign him in July in 2025, and that’s never gone well for us in the past. If some other team grabs him for only a little more than this contract, that doesn’t help us.

It probably will be a bad deal, most long goalie contracts are. But that’s just kinda the market.

Frank's not worth listening to on this subject. That contract is a good deal for the Avs. If you believe in Blackwood enough to pay a 2nd to get him and move Georgiev out, you can get by giving him five years when there's plenty of ways out of that contract for them if it goes south.
What I've learned over the years is that Seravalli's hockey opinions are absolutely garbage LMAO. He's good as an insider, but his own insight to the game is f***ing awful.

Frank does bring up a good point though by saying the $5M /year contract range for goalies is the kiss of death. Campbell, Jarry, etc....none have worked out.

But I think Blackwood has more upside than any of those and he does have potential whereas the others have already maxed out when they signed their new contract.

There are a few that are making that much that are working out too so it's not all bad there. Demko and Saros are finishing up 5 mil contracts at five and four years respectively. There are a few making more than that not working out too. Goalies at all pay grades come with some level of risk and some will just be more than others. I understand people's hesitancy with Blackwood given his time in New Jersey but he's as good as any to give this sort of contract to when they hit UFA. It's going to be the price of doing business and it'll rise with the cap too.

Demko and Saros are not really comparable though, they were always top goalies and Demko should get like 8M if he's healthy.

But the goalie market has evolved. Blackwood is going to be the 17th highest paid goalie next year. People should focus on that, and not the 5.25M. I think that's pretty fair.

Did he really? That seems like something a 4th grader would come up with based on a coincidence driven by a really small sample size.
I really don't get what the big deal is as there are only like 3 options for goalies. You have a top end goalie at 3-4 million on a RFA contract, you pay 8M+ for a top end proven starter, or you pay 5-6M for a middle tier goaltender. This fits right in that third options.

And so far Blackwood looks great.

4 5 6 games sample size now. When is he worthy of his new extension? 10 games?

Also top 5 in SV% now which is pretty impressive considering he played the majority of the season in San Jose

What’s important for the avs is to get steady goaltending during this window everything else doesn’t matter. I’m done dumping on georgiev.

Sure., if you literally only bring up the bad ones it looks like it makes sense. But I guess you/Seravalli conveniently forgot about Ullmark, Demko, Saros, Shesterkin, Markstrom....

All goalies currently signed for between $5-6M or in the case of Ullmark, just coming off his $5M deal. All very good goalies who no question each team would happily sign them to that contract again if they could.

Is that counting Adin Hill, Logan Thompson and Karel Vejmelka ? The first 2 will probably sign for more than Blackwood's $5.25M... quite possibly all three with their existing teams or as UFAs.
